March-ing Onward

Fishing and Flash Foxy Women’s Climbing Festival By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—The Blake Jones Trout Derby, a March staple in the Bishop, CA area, celebrated its 51st trout derby year, with warm weather, and beautifully snow-covered mountains in the background. Established in 1968, the derby typically produces a grand show of anglers, nearly 1,000 participants each year. The weigh-in and festivities take place at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, but the real place to see the fishing is at Pleasant Valley Reservoir and the Owens Rivers nearby the Pleasant Valley Campground. Pleasant Valley Reservoir and the Blake Jones Trout Derby should be a historic marker in most anglers' minds, as this is the spot where the legendary Powerbait was developed and tested, by none-other-than...Blake Jones. The cheesy bait came along as a substitute for the blocks of Velveeta cheese so popular with anglers in the 1950s. The secret to Jones' bait was its ability to stay on the hook after numerous casts, and it didn't sink. Berkley now carries the Powerbait legacy onward, claiming “PowerBait makes novice anglers good, and good anglers great.” There are so many different kinds of bait, it's up to what you are fishing for, to pick the best product. Multicolored, stinky, affordable, and float-able, the biggest draw to the bait is...it catches fish. The Blake Jones Trout Derby starts the spring fishing season off in the Bishop region, while the rest of the Eastern Sierra waits for the Saturday, April 27, “Season Opener.” However, on any given day during the year, you can find anglers fishing the Owens River section, and at Pleasant Valley Reservoir, which is below Crowley Lake, and benefits from this position. The fish stocking by the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Bishop Chamber of Commerce always create a very fish-able area, with some real whoppers, up to seven pound trout, coming from the shores.

Ladies, Flash It! No, there aren't going to be any ladies doing anything illegal, like showing uncovered body parts....No, this “flash” has to do with being able to climb a problem in one try, your first try. A “Flash” can be the person who successfully climbed the boulder before your ascent, or it could be the information you gain from others about the problem, sometimes while you are climbing the boulder. One way or the other, Flash is information, and it's coming for its fourth year with the Flash Foxy Women's Climbing Festival (WCF), March 22-24. Flash Foxy, founded by Shelma Jun in 2014, started as an online sharing point for women climbers of all ages, and abilities, and the event arrived in Bishop, CA in 2016, and the WCF took off, like Lynn Hill's free ascent of the Nose on El Capitan, in SEE LADIES CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

Geoff McFetridge of Los Angeles, CA, came up to Pleasant Valley Campground and the Owens River to do a little fly fishing and camping with his daughter. The delightful weather played right into the wonderful weekend for anglers, who also joined in the Blake Jones Trout Derby. Photo by The Hired Pen

Spring Sightings and Sounds

Bluebird Days, Painted Ladies and Frogs Croaking at Night

Kiss tanks (temporary ponds created by snowmelt and rain run-off) and ponds are attractive to migrating animals, insects, amphibians, and birds, like the Mountain Bluebird (state bird of Nevada), and waterfowl, like the colorful Canvasback diving bird, with a vivid red head, white chest and black tail. The Tablelands north of Bishop, CA are a migratory fly-way for birds and butterflies, which in turn, pollinate the spring and summer wildflowers in the High Sierra. Photo by The Hired Pen By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—It's official. We're in spring (as of March 21). Although, you'd not know it looking at the 20-foot-high-walls of snow in the mountains above 9,000 feet. Kiss tanks (temporary ponds created by snowmelt and rainwater), and ponds on the Tablelands attracted flocks of Mountain Bluebirds mid-March, as the birds moved northward, they stopped to catch some early hatches of insects brought about by the late snows and rains north of Bishop, CA. Upon closer inspection, these ponds also have high numbers of waterfowl migrating northward, including some vivid Canvasback divers, with their bright red heads, white chests, and black tails. The Painted Ladies butterflies also indulged in some of the spring frolicking by checking brightly colored yard decorations, and even some of the smaller “belly-flowers” beginning to develop. Desert landscapes south of the southern Sierra, like near Tehachapi and Mojave, CA, have the beginnings of the wildflowers: Apricot Globemallow, brittle brush, desert dandelions, desert lupine, gold poppies, and at the Jawbone Canyon OHRV, Yucca bushes, Joshua trees, and poppies, which open mid-day. If the weather is cold, poppies close up in the late afternoon. The Death Valley Superblooms, 2016 and 2005, not surprisingly, occurred during two of our wettest winters in recent years...until 2019. Death Valley didn't get the early winter rains, so the bloom isn't expected to be “Super.” For places in the higher reaches of the Eastern Sierra, we will have to wait until late May, through June and July, to see the white Mariposa lily, orange tiger lilies, yellow mule's ears, purple lupine and delicate wild iris. In the meantime, enjoy the first of the orange and red Indian paintbrush, scarlet gilia, and smell the sweet fragrance of the mountain peach or mountain mahogany. And, inconceivable as it sounds, frogs and toads have begun announcing their presence, day and night, near water. Some of these amphibians spend the cold and dry periods in a state of torpor, like a deep sleep, and they will bury themselves through the winter months, emerging from stream banks and from between the bark and trunk of our large trees. PS, toads have shorter legs than frogs, and a warty skin, which does secrete poisons, which then cause irritations. So, don't go kissing any toads. Really! You won't find a prince charming, but may have to visit a doctor to explain the skin problem....

March 21 – 27, 2019

Yosemite Valley, in 1993. The event fosters climbing access for all women, with an opportunity to meet, try climbing, and gain information. Last year's event had nearly 300 participants, and according to the website, Flash Foxy did 84 percent of their business in the area. The event has been so successful, that Flash Foxy will hold another WCF in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Local vendors adding services and sponsorships include: The Hostel California, Eastside Sports, the Bishop Area Climbers Coalition, Mt. Rambler Brewery, the Friends of the Inyo, Sage to Summit, the Bishop Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, Indigenous Women Hike, and Jean Tucky (local yoga instructor) and Tori Orlowski (a physical therapist from Mammoth Lakes, CA) will be involved in the classes. Big event sponsors, such as REI, and Black Diamond, also come to play and learn in the boulderlands (the Buttermilks), the Tablelands (the Happy and Sad Bouldering Areas), the Owens River “Gorge,” and our big back yard.

I’m a Reader Retriever... I look for it every Wednesday in my driveway, you should too...

Amanda Palmer, southern California visitor, scrambles up a boulder near the Birthday Boulders, in the Buttermilks. Participants to the Flash Foxy Women's Climbing Festival, March 22-24, classes will be learning about the different types of climbing, including in the Buttermilks. Some of the clinics and events, take place at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, and some are open to the public for free, like the market, March 23. Other events on Sunday, March 24, involve stewardship projects in the area. Photo by The Hired Pen

Individual Control In the beginning Infinite Wisdom, Divine Intelligence and Perfect Peace in all It’s Glory created you. Even though there are billions of others that were created, you are unique. The Love and the Law applies exclusively to you. The Universe awaits your direction for It has infinity energy to be channeled in pathways of your choosing. You are the focal point of Cosmic Energy. With over seven billion individuals on the blue sphere we call earth, this is true for each one. Universal Intelligence or God does not deal with groups, all transactions are on a One to One basis. How we communicate what we desire to the Infinite is by our thinking, speaking and actions. Joseph Murphy, in his book “The Cosmic Energizer” wrote, :”This Cosmic Energizer flows harmoniously, peacefully, rhythmically and joyously, and when we let this power flow constructively through us., we are acting in harmony with the Cosmic Energizer, and we will manifest harmony, health, peace and all the riches of the Infinite in our lives. Whenever we indulge in remorse, self-condemnation, resentment or any form of negative thinking, the Divine Energy becomes trapped within us and produces all kinds of trouble.” Perhaps you never thought that God could bring both what is good for you and what is bad for you. In the Bible it says that everything that was created was called good, and it also says that God does not see evil or bad and that it is God’s good pleasure to give to you. Each of us provides the fodder for manifestation by whatever form of communication we employ. Matthew 12:37 states, “For by thy words thou shalt be justified and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” If it is love, peace, health, wealth or happiness that is desired there must be love, peace, health, wealth and happiness in our thoughts, or words and our actions. It is difficult to watch the “Ain’t it Awful” news every night and keep a positive outlook or even keep a level emotional profile, however if you must watch;you can mitigate the emotional involvement with the stories by seeing that the things reported are the exception and not the rule. Not everybody is affected, and especially, not you.. There are many ways to clean up what we say. One of the seven deadly sins mentioned in the Bible is sowing discord among the brethren. For your sake I would avoid gossip in any form. Again, in the Bible it tells us to come boldly to the throne of Grace. Claim what you desire as if it were already present. If you want to travel, travel in your mind now, don’t wait. In the beginning God took the formless and made it form. God spoke that form into being from the formless. You are made in the Image and after the likeness of God. You have the same nature of God, thus the same power. You speak your word like Isaiah when he sent out his word to accomplish whereto he had sent it, and it did not return unto him void. Each of us is sending out that word every time we open our mouth. It behooves us to send out words that when they return are what we want out of life. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!

Playhouse 395 brings Mamma Mia to the stage Playhouse 395 is pleased to announce that they will be bringing the beloved musical Mamma Mia! to the Bishop stage this spring. Unbeknownst to her feisty single mom Donna (played by Marianne Schat) she invites the three "potential dads" to her wedding on the small Greek island of Kalokairi. This is the beginning of a rollicking, packed-with-adventure-and-fun story set to the wonderful songs of ABBA. Bringing it all together, with vision and style and collectively a world of experience are Director Martha Reynolds, Music Director Ryan Mills and Choreographer Sabrina Nioche, Jan Hambleton is serving as the Producer.
