Here Comes a Horseman 2022
Jack Tatum talks about 80 years as an Eastern Sierra and Great Basin horseman and cowboy
By Christina Reed
Eastern Sierra, CA—Great horsemen aren’t born, they’re made through years of exceptional skill in the care, raising, and handling of horses, and stock. Great horsemenship can’t be inherited, it’s earned. And, while you can be influenced into becoming a great horseman, your family or work adapts you to the tasks at hand, to be a true horseman, you have it within you to have great respect for yourself, others, and your horse. You need great patience, discipline, and understand your horse’s mindset, and that requires a lot of knowing how horses think, and what they need to be a good riding partner.
Jack Tatum, 91, has just such qualifications to be called a “great horseman,” and he’s not bashful about talking about how the process of becoming a good cowboy or horseman happens. With a smile, he says, given the choice between all the kinds of work he’s done with horses and mules, packing in the mountains, farming and ranching, “I like ranchin’ better.”
Jack is a life-long resident of the Eastern Sierra, and a true part of the earliest developments of the Owens Valley, since the 1930s. His father, Leonard “Slim” Tatum, was born in 1900, and he came West from Texas in a wagon, and “when he landed” in the region in the 1920s, he had a “cotton place” in Blythe, CA. Then Slim decided to “go on to Oregon,” Jack relates, and finally Slim rode the Slim Princess train out of Southern California in 1923, Jack says, in search of “being a cowboy.” He arrived at Laws, and made a decision to stay for awhile. Slim’s desire to work with cattle took him to the Hillside Cattle Company, and away the Tatums went, on to become a leading cattle rancher in Round Valley, CA, about 10 miles north of Bishop, CA. Slim took up work in 1924 with Charlie Roberts, working for the pack station at Lake Mary, near Mammoth Lakes, CA. Later, Slim and Frank Clark built up a partnership and bought the Broken Bar Pack Outfit in June Lake, CA., which eventually became the Frontier Pack Station. In 1925, Slim went into the dairy business in June Lake, and he and his wife ran the Pine Cone Dairy, which had routes around June Lake. Jack says, Mammoth wasn’t much of anything in those days, so the dairy routes he had as a kid didn’t include Mammoth. Slim, the former owner of Frontier Pack Station, would become the First Grand Marshal of Mule Days, in 1970.
Jack’s mother, Hazel, was a Schober, born in 1902, a sibling of John and
Art Schober, and the family had a ranch in Round Valley too. Hazel and Slim met at Lake Mary’s pack station, and they were married in 1925. R.J. Schober, Hazel’s father, was a well-known teamster, freighting equipment and supplies from Los Angeles to the Owens Valley, and once the Carson & Colorado Railroad reached Laws, and the Owens Valley, R.J. took up hauling silver bullion from Panamint Valley. Hazel was a working member of the Tatum family’s business, tending to the milking and delivery of products for their dairy. The dairy, Jack recalls, “It was a booming cause, the LADWP (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) was building the aqueduct.”
Jack was born in 1931, and remembers the Round Valley ranch very well. His family had their home place on Birchim Lane, where other families, the Palsroks and Schobers had ranch places too. History has erased his home place, but not Jack’s memories of Round Valley, and the magnificent horses his family would raise beneath the shadow of Mt. Tom.
Here Comes a Horseman Jack tells of the year that changed his destiny, as a horseman. He says
his father Slim bought the first Quarter Horse stallion the family owned, in 1942. “It was the war. How the hell they got the money for gas and tires during the war, I’ll never know.” But, Slim did. He took a trip to Texas, and came back with a registered Quarter Horse, named Cinco de Mayo. The American Quarter Horse Association was at its infancy (formed in 1941), and Cinco de Mayo was registered “#1200,” as Jack describes it. Jack laughs as he recalls the first time the family raced Cinco de Mayo at a racetrack in Corona, CA, in the 1940s. “Cinco de Mayo was a speed demon,” and pulled off a quick run at .23 seconds in a quarter mile. Today, the American Quarter Horse Association has more than six million registered horses. Slim would later pick up a magnificent stud, out of “Wimpy # 1” from the famed King Ranch, (the country’s largest cattle ranch) in Texas. “Tequila” was purchased in 1945, and a shot of tequila was celebrated with in Del Rio, Texas as Slim made his way back to California. Jack began riding Tequila as a two-year old colt, and he fondly remembers his high school days, training the young horse on the family’s ranch.
Jack’s horsemanship took a hiatus when he was drafted into the Korean War. At the time, Jack was actually playing baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1950, and “we went all over hell, Kentucky, Alabama” he notes. However, when Jack was drafted he went to play baseball for the Marine Corps, and as a corporal, he was not sent overseas. A full colonel once flew him home to look at some good horses the Tatums had and Jack laughs as he describes flying the plane, at one point, back home over the Owens Valley.
When the movie, Jack’s favorite, “Will Penny,” (1967) came to film in the Eastern Sierra (Aspendell and North Lake, in the Bishop Creek area), starring Charlton Heston as Will Penny, and Ben Johnson as Alex, Johnson, Jack recalls, was a good horseman and wanted to rope and wrangle the calves for the branding scenes in the movie. Jack clearly remembers the movie set and his Uncle Schober’s warnings about NOT using Schober’s calves for the branding scenes. It had been a muddy, rainy, chilly day on the set, and Schober didn’t want his calves dragged around the movie set, by novice cowpunchers. But, in the end, a calf was procured for the scene, not a Schober calf, and Johnson did a wonderful job getting the roping and branding scenes down pat.

DEPUTY SHERIFF SWEARING IN CEREMONY
INYO COUNTY, CA, March 17, 2022: Today Inyo County Sheriff Eric Pritchard held a swearing in ceremony for Mathew Dummer, our newest Deputy Sheriff.
Deputy Dummer moved to the Owens Valley in 1994 and graduated from Palisades High School in 2003. In 2005 Dummer joined the US Navy and served for over 8 years as a gas turbine mechanic. After the Navy he worked in the power generation industry in San Diego. Dummer returned to Inyo County with his wife and two kids in order to pursue his career in law enforcement.

The S T Ranch was established in 1954, as a livestock feeding company, and today, Jack is listed as owner of this long-time enterprise. The Quarter Horses Jack has raised, he figures about 1,000, are some of the most popular working horses in the world. Known for their exceptional speed, reaching up to 55 mph, in a quarter mile, the Quarter Horse is also known for its “cow savvy.” This breed of horse, which dates to the early descendants of the horses brought to America by the Spanish Conquistadors, is the quintessential American horse. Massive muscles, and large hind quarters and shoulders, with a large barrel, the Quarter Horse has a beefy / stocky appearance, unlike its lighter / leaner, taller counterpart, the Thoroughbred. And Jack says some controversy arrived on the horse breeding scene, when thoughts of cross breeding a Quarter Horse with the Thoroughbred happened. The “Appendix Quarter Horse” became the first-generation cross (in Texas in 1949, creating a new type of registration for the horse), and due to the Thoroughbred’s tempera
ment, long-distance endurance and incredible energy, and the Quarter Horse’s amazing agility, strength and sprinting abilities, the combination has become one of the most pop-
ular horse mixes created in the past century.

In 2020, Jack’s contributions to the American Quarter Horse Association were recognized by the AQHA with a plaque in “Recognition of Breeding American Quarter Horses,” for “75 Years 1944-2020,” as a “Breeder S T Ranch.”

A young Jack Tatum, with dog, Laddie, at the home place in Round Valley, CA.
Slim Tatum, Jack’s father, came West from Texas in a wagon, bent on becoming a cowboy. He jumped aboard the Slim Princess train from Los Angeles, and arrived at Laws, CA. Destined to become one of the Eastern Sierra’s most beloved and wellknown ranchers, pack station owners, and American Quarter Horse Association breeders in the West.
In 2020, Jack Tatum was awarded “In Recognition of Breeding American Quarter Horses” for “75 Years 19442020,” as a “Breeder S T Ranch.” Jack is still walking in Round Valley, remembering his ranching, and all of the magnificent horses he raised over 80 years.

“Tequila” was one of the first American Quarter Horse Association’s top working horses. Slim Tatum took a shot of tequila at Del Rio, Texas, when he brought the magnificent horse home to California and his ranch, the S T Ranch, Round Valley, CA.

BUHS Band and Choir
In May of 2019, BUHS Band & Choir went to competition. At that competition, we did well. Band took first place in their category, the Honor Choir took 2nd in theirs, Jazz Band took first in their category. Our biggest win was the Esprit de Corps award, which we received for our respectful behavior and etiquette while at competition. The picture shown is a picture of the last group of students from Bishop High to attend competition.
For the first time since May of 2019 we are finally able to attend the Music in the Parks competition again. The freshmen in the picture from 2019 are now Seniors. The underclassmen will experience their first high school level competition this year. It is an opportunity that we have missed over the past 2 years. We will be taking Band, Jazz Band, Choir and Honor Choir.
We will be attending competition the weekend of April 22-24. There are some changes this year. In past years we attended Music in the Parks at Disneyland. This year that was not an option. Instead we will be attending Music in the Parks at Knott’s Berry Farm. Students will arrive in Placentia on Friday afternoon to compete, and receive their rewards on Saturday at Knott’s Berry Farm.
These trips are expensive. Our estimated total cost is about $16,000 and does not include food. Mammoth Mountain Community Fund has given us a gen-
erous grant of $5000 to help cover the costs of the trip. Students and parents have contributed a sizable amount toward the trip. To cover remaining expenses we have a variety of fundraisers planned. On Saturday, March 26th, 2022, from 9 AM to noon, Mr Mills will be in the high school parking lot with student volunteers to collect recyclable CA return value cans and bottles. You can drop off your recyclables with him, or turn them in yourself and bring the proceeds to Mr. Mills. On Saturday April 9th, 2022, from 9 AM to 2 PM, Mr. Mills will be with band and choir students at the Home Street School bus parking area conducting a car wash, and they will also collect recyclables at that time.
In addition we have an online donation page through On the Stage: https:// www.onthestage.tickets/bishop-union-high-school/campaigns/competition-356 where community members can choose to help support paying for the bus, for a student, for a student meal or for a chaperone hotel room. The site does have a credit card fee for each transaction. Any excess funds we receive will be utilized for next year’s competition trip.
We try to keep student costs and chaperone costs as low as possible so that finances do not prevent participation. The participation of the community in this endeavor will help us greatly. We will do our best to represent the community of Bishop well as we compete and as we travel to and from competition. We hope you will be able to help us and support our talented students.
