Following the auctions, where the same local small markets (like Manor Market, in Bishop, CA) bid on the best of show, the animals are butchered and packaged, and finally make its way to the store's coldcases. There is something to be said for watching your

“You might be a local if...you've seen real cow-punchers rounding up grass-fed cattle in the valley.” Eastern Sierra, CA—The newspapers encourage it, our tourist / chambers of commerce talk it up, ranchers and farmers promote it, and a handful of small markets keep it stocked year-round. What is this “it”? Local products, including meat, vegetables, fruits, and hand-made items. The “shop locally” motto has been in existence since the beginnings of commerce in the region. In fact, shopping locally was all you could have done, 170-plus-years-ago. You might be a local if...you haven't shopped out of the area in years; including not having people from outside bringing you items from out of the area, including internet. And, this doesn't bother you in the least.”

The springtime chicks are peeping about at Wye Road and Feed in Bishop, CA. New owners (since December 2018), Norman and Danielle “Dani” Mull, and their daughter, Carson, are busy with newly hatched chickens, turkeys, and something new, goldfish.

The Eastern Sierra towns were created on a throughway for fur-trappers, explorers, miners, cattlemen, military expeditions, and the towns and villages were settled on ancient passages of the indigenous people, who were here thousands of years before the advent of roads, ranches, farms, and businesses. There really isn't too much new under the sun in the region that wasn't here in some form, a thousand years ago, including water diversion for irrigation and crops.

Round Valley, north of Bishop, CA, is historically known for its rich soil, grass, and cattle ranches. Native Americans irrigated / farmed this region at least five to seven thousand years ago, but there were no cattle on the range then....

“You might be a local if...you've bought lamb, beef, rabbits, turkeys, chickens, goats, and raised them for consumption, or sold your products, farm goods and animals to a local market, like Manor Market” Springtime, in a good year, is a great time to check out the landscape, and the new animal and plant arrivals. Every day brings a new scene to the range / farmland / barns / pastures. Many of these baby animals become the projects of the local 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of

food raised right in front of you. You know what they are eating, how they've been cared for, and that the quality of the meat, or vegetables, and fruits isn't coming from across an ocean, or from another country. “You might be a local if...you chose to watch sunrises and sunsets, without obstructions such as high rises, and the only skyscrapers you see are the Sierra Nevada mountains.”

Eating Porcupines and Other Springtime Recipes By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

Eastern Sierra, CA—Being somewhat thriftyminded and away from big city shopping allows for creativity in the frugal kitchen. And, presented with ample local produce and grassfed beef, eating some porcupines with dandelions for dinner isn't an unheard of thing, with a little imagination.

Cookin' Up Porcupines No, we aren't going hunting for real porcupines. We are cooking up Once upon a time, during the Great Depression, folks made orange mara money-saving, malade from carrots, oranges, and lemons...even in the Sunshine State, nifty, meal, which known for its citrus industry, fresh fruits were a real luxury in the 1930s. is easy enough for Photo by The Hired Pen a young person to make, and have some fun too. Kids delight in making this “Porcupine” recipe, and it highlights grass-fed, rangeland, ground beef. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Take a pound of ground beef, about a half a cup of uncooked rice, add salt and pepper, and a dash of milk. Mix it up. Make little oval-shaped balls, nearly three inches long. Place your little critters in an oblong shaped glass baking dish, and pour about two cups of either fresh or canned tomatoes over the top. Put the critters in the oven for an hour and a half. Watch with the kids as the rice grows into the porcupines' quills....

A Different Kind of Round-Up Dandelions, dreaded in most gardens and lawns, have been a staple tender new greens since time immortal. And, if you haven't rounded-up the “weeds,” and sent them to the trash, here's an old-southern-fashioned recipe. Gather a dishpan full of greens, and wash them thoroughly. Then, place them in a big pot, put in some water to cover, salt and pepper, and either about a pound of bacon or ham hocks. Boil this for about 30 minutes. You can substitute spinach or collard greens for dandelion greens.

A Carrot Jam, with Oranges and Lemons—Called Marmalade Fresh oranges, lemons, and tangerines, while a California trademark, are still a treat in season. This old-styled recipe from the Depression makes for a wonderful orange marmalade (a jam with the fruits' rind still on), and features carrots too. Combine two cups of cut up raw carrots, one orange and lemon ground up, with peels still on, and mix with about a cup of sugar and half a cup of honey, and simmer for ten minutes. Then turn it down, cover, and stir it often for nearly an hour, and then pour the mixture into a sterilized jam jar.

Desire Demonstrates When I was in the third grade, I had a negative experience with my third grade teacher. It was coming up on Valentine’s Day, and the project for the day was to cutout and design Valentines. Scissors and construction paper was distributed to all the students. Most of the other children looked forward to this project, however; a friend of mine and myself decided to use the time more creatively. We decided to cut each other’s hair. I went first and began on Carl’s head. I had already begun when a loud scream came from the other side of the classroom. That scream emanated from the teacher, who saw what Carl and I were doing. We were quickly taken to the principle’s office. Both Carl and I had a great deal of discomfort by being led to the office while the teacher held tightly to our ear. Both our parents were called. My mother, who was president of the PTA, showed up first. Neither the principle or my mother condoned what we did, but both agreed that the teacher over reacted. We were both suspended for a week, even though the teacher wanted us both expelled. This whole episode got me thinking how I would react if I were the teacher. This started me on a lifetime goal of being a teacher. I have always admired people that had a dream from an early age that never seemed to deviate from their goal. When the going got tough, they kept on going. I’d like to say that was me, but I encountered a lot of roadblocks along the way, and my path would deviate for a time. If I had known how great college was for me, I would not have waited five years after my graduation from high school. I may have neglected to include how spiritual influence prompted me with my goal. Every time I felt I had gone about as far as I could go; in would come either an inspiration book or talk, or a member of the clergy to help guide me back on the path. While I didn’t know what I wanted to teach, at first, I made up my mind to teach absolute truth; by that I meant something that was without dispute. I didn’t know what an impossibility that was. All the sciences both physical and cultural are riddled with disputes, however, I decided to study geology. There was no disputes on the rocks, but how they got there was heavily disputed. How I eventually became an environmental scientist is another story, but it is suffice to say, everything fell in line, at the right time and at the right place. My father had told me, to get a good job, you have to be there at the right time. I didn’t know how to do that, but later I could see what he was saying. When you have a dream and you don’t give up on it, Universal Intelligence will devote all it’s resources to see that it happens. In case you are wondering, neither Carl or I became barbers. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
