Eastern Sierra, CA—February’s fury came at the odd end of the storm alphabet. Winter storms “Olive,” “Piper,” and “Quest” walloped California, like no other, and at the end of the day, after the blizzards, winds, flooding, and cold temperatures, many of us locally could only wish for a bit of a break.

“Provisions are an issue.” That’s the headline from remote, island-like places, where getting supplies in and out of towns is becoming an issue. Following days of snow and closed highways, many people are finding their pantries (if they have one) near empty. And, for many without provisions set aside for emergencies, they are finding out the hard way, that being stuck someplace without food, water, heat, and shelter, is a part of this year’s tough winter. “Laying in provisions” used to be something that our ancestors did every fall,

Lake Early Opener, Saturday, March 4th. The opener, says the new Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Angelica Mora Rodriguez, is a “family event,” and involves the community. Rodriguez says she fielded “lots of calls” about the derby, and whether the event would happen. But, she adds, thanks to a grant from Inyo County, the county’s Parks and Recreation crews cleaning up the reeds at Diaz Lake (for smooth fishing access), the state department of Fish and Wildlife, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and generous donations from the Lone Pine community, the derby will move forward early on March 4th, with registration beginning at 6 a.m.
