Eric Pritchard Pritchard is the current Inyo County Sheriff, and has been with the department for 23 years. He has served as a corporal, sargeant, and under sheriff, and has 10 years with the SWAT team. He’s “vested in the department and its members, and providing better service.” He acknowledged the difficulties with the Veteran Services, and the limited resources available to vets in the two counties. In response to a question about getting to know your troops (staff / employees), Pritchard said, “I can relate to everyone, and I know every employee.” He also noted, he wouldn’t ask anyone to do anything he wouldn’t do. He said the public health mandates “should be a choice,” and “Not for anyone to judge you.” He stated he would not enforce mandates. He supported a school resource officer, and said with full staffing, revisiting the resource officer would be important. Pritchard is involved with high school coaching, and youth sports, coaching soccer. He believed it was important for the community to have access to law enforcement, and hiring locals, “people who are invested in the department.” He was in favor of the current CCW issuing / permitting process, and he currently issues CCWs for the two counties. Like all of the other candidates, Pritchard also stated that the only times the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department works with ICE / US Immigrations and Customs, is if there is a violent offender being released, and the safety of Inyo County’s citizens is a concern. Stephanie Rennie Rennie is the Chief Investigator to the District Attorney (from 2016 to present), and she previously worked as an Inyo County Deputy sheriff (2006-2010) and an Inyo County Correctional officer (2003-2006). In her 19 years in law enforcement, she has worked with other law enforcement agencies, investigated use of force matters, and prepared and assisted with court related summons. She is focused on building unity with the communities, creating better relationships, and building the trust back in the Sheriff’s Department. She would like to serve the veterans better, and acknowledged the lack of local resources (such as in-home care and mental health services) available. She gets to know each employee, and wants to have a team approach, to bring up the morale. She doesn’t believe in “forced mandates,” for public health, and believes in “personal choice.” She’s in favor of a school resource officer, and mentioned protecting our youth. “Our youth is our future.” She is involved in youth sports, and taught classes for Wild Iris, and said she works for our constituents. She’s interested in getting “public trust back,” and said, “community meetings are huge,” along with walking in the communities. Like the other candidates, she felt the current CCW permitting process was working. Her leadership, she believed, was Across through being a role model, providing services the communities needed, and being an understanding leader. She hoped to “inspire our deputies,” and “bring law enforcement back into communities.”

4 Parts of a play

Joe Vetter Vetter has 23 years of “sworn law enforcement” experience, and is currently the second in command at the Town of Mammoth Lakes, CA, police department, as the senior sargeant. He said he has “community-oriented policing” style, and he’s focused on supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States. Vetter was an Inyo County Deputy Sheriff (20122016), and began with the Mammoth Lakes Police Department in 2016. He believed in reaching out to “Kids, tribes, and liaisons” and providing “firm, fair, and compassionate law enforcement.” He’s focused on “keeping officers here, rather than just pass through.” He added, “Leadership starts at the top.” He acknowledged that “vets fight for freedom,” and said he wouldn’t enforce the public health mandates. He said he believed in school resource officer, “110 percent,” and saw room for two school resource officers, citing that Mammoth Lakes Police Department “has a grant for” a school resource officer. He advocated for a return to school resource officer programs such as gun safety, Stranger Danger, and 911 use. Vetter stated he was “a people person,” and is “out in the community, participating.” He is an AYSO soccer coach, and teaches soccer. He said, “People have lost touch with each officer,” and he said getting out of the patrol car and getting into communities were ways to regain trust. He felt “small business was the life blood of our economy.” He is a part of issuing CCWs, and did not have a problem with the current process.

THEY’LL MEET YOU AT THE STATION Laws Railroad Museum and Historical Site Train Crew volunteers keep the museum’s trains on track for the education and enjoyment of visitors from around the world. April, volunteer appreciation month, is a great time to recognize these dedicated individuals. For much of the year, the museum’s train crew is behind the scenes, maintaining engines and track, preserving and restoring historic rolling stock, and talking with visiting rail fans. Engine House volunteers maintain and operate the historic 1927 Death Valley Brill Car #5 aka Doodlebug along with Old Smokey, the engine pulling the ore cart turned Birthday Express both from the historic Pine Creek Tungsten Mine. Beginning Memorial Day weekend, volunteer operators begin scheduled train rides for the public. Trainloads of museum visitors have the opportunity to ride the Death Valley Brill car while learning about its history, and the history of the Carson and Colorado Railroad. In addition to these scheduled rides, volunteers provide memorable experiences for charter groups celebrating special occasions, including weddings and school field trips. What motivates these crew members to give away their time and expertise? Most have a lifelong history of volunteerism. It’s no secret that people who volunteer for causes they love are happier and live longer than those who don’t, but the predominant reason for this crew is, it is fun. It is fun to

make things happen with likeminded people, fun to learn amazing chapters of little known history, and fun to put smiles on the faces of families enjoying special occasions. In May, the crew will be sharing those volunteer opportunities with others, during two days of training for train operators. New volunteers will learn how to operate the Death Valley Brill Car safely, and once they have mastered the required skills, will be eligible to be part of this privilege of making history come alive. Training dates are May 14 and 21. To learn more, or to register, contact the Laws Museum at (760) 8735950 or by e-mail at lawsrailroadmuseum@gmail. com. Laws Railroad Museum and Historical Site is honored to be here to preserve the rich history of our Owens Valley community.
