Blake Jones Trout Derby and Bishop’s Airport offers summer flights

Eastern Sierra, CA—Join a 54-year-old fishing tradition on Saturday, March 11, as the Blake Jones Trout Derby happens in Bishop, CA, at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. This early fishing derby draws anglers, visitors and families from far and wide, and the fishing takes place at the Pleasant Valley Reservoir (about nine miles north of Bishop) and the Owens River.

The derby began in 1968, and the Chamber of Commerce created the event, which later was renamed (1988) the Blake Jones Trout Derby. Why “Blake Jones”? The derby gained its moniker from Bishop resident, Blake Jones, who was an avid angler, and an inventor of a type of dough / cheese bait (Zeke’s). Any angler who has shaped a piece of floating cheese bait on their hook has Jones to thank for a product which truly changed the lures of fishing (pun intended).

Anglers register for the derby at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, at 6 a.m., where anglers check in / pay fees (adult $25 / Kids $15), and the visitors and anglers can participate in the derby’s other sides of fun, such as food, vendors, live music, and of course, this is where the weigh-ins take place (by 3 p.m.) and the final, in person, winners are announced at 4 p.m. Winners must be present.

The derby is a blind bogey format, which means a secret angler has already caught the fish weight category for the anglers. All the entrants to the derby who catch a fish that size will be entered into the winner’s drawing. There are other prizes for participants, including the farthest to travel to the derby, and the smallest fish caught, and there’s $10,000 in prizes being awarded. All of the California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife angling rules apply. The Bishop Chamber of Commerce, the County of Inyo, and the City of Bishop all help sponsor this annual family-oriented event, and this derby is a lively way to begin, pre-season, angling.
