Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly
May 2 – 8, 2019
¡Salud! Cinco de Mayo 2019 By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—It wasn't a sure deal the Mexican Army, under General Ignacio Zaragoza, would defeat the French Empire in the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. After all, the Mexicans, at 4,000 strong were outnumbered by the French, nearly 8,000, and the French had been the moxie battle-winner for about 50 years. Napoleon Bonaparte III sent his navy to defeat the Mexicans, and he wanted a second Mexican Empire, and he hadn't planned on the fighting fervor of the poor in-
Astorgas Restaurant, at the north end of the Bishop area, is a family-owned, operated business, which is serving up Cinco de Mayo festivities on many levels. Join the Astorga family, Anna, Manuel, Lee, Jose, and Gustavo for live mariachi music, and a drawing for a threeday cruise to Mexico, happening at 4 PM. Manuel says, “Come in and eat and enjoy the music.” Have one of the many traditional plates, like chile rellenos, and become one of the “regular faces,” and customers who are “like family,” after 15 years of serving fine Mexican food, says Manuel. Astorgas serves as a meeting place for a number of community service clubs, and contributes to county-wide events. The Cruise Trip Drawing is at 4 PM, and Cinco de Mayo festivities and music begin at 5 PM.
It's an exciting Cinco de Mayo celebration at Astorgas, and one lucky winner will be saying, “Buen viaje,” or bon voyage, as they embark on a three-day cruise to Mexico. Join the Astorga family, at the north end of Bishop, in the live mariachi music, and good food.
La Casita Mexican Restaurant and Cantina, meaning the small house, is a downtown Bishop mainstay, and the Laughon family, Paul, Robert, and Gloria, have been serving up top-shelf margaritas, traditional Mexican dishes, and their infamous super-large burritos, since 1980. With a following of decades, if you want to find out about town news, or hear about a whopper of a fish / tale, this is the restaurant to become a “local” in. Their margaritas, in flavors like strawberry, peach, mango, raspberry, and strawberry/banana are one of their hallmarks. La Casita also holds KK's Annual Kentucky Derby Party (for 12 years) with hors d´oeuvres, and prizes for the best hats. Enjoy the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby in dashing, derby style, May 4, at 2 PM. You can make it a double header, and spend both days enjoying festivities.
La Casita starts the festivities off with their 12th annual Kentucky Derby Party, May 4, at 2 PM, and continues the fun into Cinco de Mayo. Famous for their margaritas, fishing tales, and a locals' mainstay since 1980, in downtown Bishop.
SHOW ERS
habitants of Puebla. Today, El Día de la Batalla de Puebla continues to be an annual celebration in the Mexican and American cultures, especially in California. Cinco de Mayo is not to be confused with Mexico's Independence Day (a very important commemoration) on September 16, and recognizes Mexico's independence from Spain. The Eastern Sierra's residents celebrate Sunday, Cinco de Mayo, with music, festivities, food, folkloric dancing, and there are any number of places to taste a little bit of this springtime fiesta fun. The Sierra Reader dropped in to find out what's on the menus of some of Bishop's Mexican restaurants, and where visitors and residents can enjoy some traditions of this colorful celebration.
Las Palmas, meaning the palms, located in downtown Bishop, is serving up a free shot of tequila to adult guests (to 21-year- olds and older), and their Shrimp Diablo, camarones de la diabla, or “shrimp of the devil,” with that kick of fire that makes the taste buds sizzle, for Cinco de Mayo. Rebecca, Javier, Elia, and other Ruelas family members take turns running and cooking at the restaurant. Las Palmas is known for their delicioso salsa bar, menudo on Saturdays and Sundays, and the “climbers' favorite,” veggie burrito (enchilada-style with sauce on top), and these are great choices for celebrating Cinco de Mayo, on Sunday. Try their horchata (dairy free beverage made from white rice, vanilla, cinnamon, and sugar) for a refreshing change-up, or enjoy a classic margarita with a Cinco de Mayo brunch.
Amigos celebrates a new owner (since December 2018), and Rosie Garcia is looking forward to the Cinco de Mayo festivities in the newly remodeled restaurant, in downtown Bishop. She's getting used to being the owner of the very popular restaurant, and smiling, she says, “It [being the owner] didn't sink in until the remodel. It feels real now.” Garcia notes, Amigos will serve up the popular nachos, fish tacos, and Acapulco marinated chicken, and these favorites will join the Cinco de Mayo special, los molcajetes dish / bowl (which is a traditional stone tool like a mortar and pestle, and this sets the stage for shrimp, carne asada, or chicken served in the hot bowl). Muy elaborado or something fancy. Patrons can order beer and wine to complement the meal. ¡Salud!

Bishop Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cuttings
‘Mamma Mia!’ opens to enthusiastic audiences
Playhouse 395’s production of Mamma Mia! opened last weekend to audiences who were transported to the small Greek island of Kalokairi for a few hours of wonderful singing and dancing entertainment. The energy was high and hearts were warmed by the enchanting story of friendships, love and mis-adventures, all set to the familiar and well-loved music of ABBA. As theater-goers left the theater they could be heard exclaiming over the awe-inspiring local talent that always presents itself in the Playhouse plays, with much praise for not only the cast and pit orchestra but for the costume designers, make-up artists, and set designers. For those wanting some fun, uplifting entertainment you won’t want to miss Mamma Mia! Tickets for Mamma Mia!
can be purchased from Brown Paper Tickets. They can be reached at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4093427 or 24/7 over the phone at 1-800838-3006. Tickets can also be purchased locally in Bishop at Inyo Council for the Arts at 137 South Main Street on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11-1. Premium Reserved seats are $25 and General Admission seats are $20. For wheel chair seats please call the Playhouse 395 phone number below. Tickets can also be purchased at the Theater Box Office at the high school starting one hour before the start of the show, unless it is sold out Reserved seats are almost gone for some of the shows, but there are always great General Admission seats available for those who arrive early.
This year Whiskey Creek Restaurant is partnering with Playhouse 395 for a Special Dinner for patrons with Mamma Mia! tickets. If you go to Whiskey Creek for dinner before an evening show or after a matinee, and show them your Mamma Mia! tickets for that day, you will have the opportunity to order a full dinner including soup or salad, rolls, drink and dessert (a choice of three different entrees.) Adults $35 and kids $20. This could be a great addition to your theater-going experience! For more information about this offer please call 760-873-7777. For any questions please call Playhouse 395 at 760920-9100 or visit their website at playhouse395.com, and follow them on Facebook and Instagram to see photos of the cast rehearsing and to learn a little about the cast members and production team. Mental Atmospheres It is well known that animals can sense and react to fear from humans. Ernest Holmes tells of a geologist friend who told him how he was sitting on a rock, out in the field, drawing a map. He happened to glance down and noticed a rattlesnake coiled under the rock on which he was sitting. Holmes asked what he did when he noticed the snake, and if he was afraid of it. He said, “Not at all. I had no desire to hurt the snake, and it had no desire to harm me.” So he sat there and leisurely completed his map. Each of us is projecting a mental atmosphere whether we are aware of it or not, and likewise, each of us is on the receiving end of the atmosphere of others. Interestingly, it becomes a “birds of a feather tend to flock together” type of thing. Those projecting fear or trepidation tend group with others of their ilk. People emanating confidence and strength of character will be with other confident individuals, except when instructing the fearful ones into becoming confident. Our mental atmosphere is silently attracting people to us or repelling them from us. One reason it is vital to be aware of mental atmospheres how they tend to have a contagious element in them. When you are in constant contact with the depressed or weary and afraid, it can weigh heavily on your own countenance. On the other hand, when with upbeat, enthusiastic people, that enthusiasm can lift you to new heights. Great speakers know to project confidence, integrity and honesty, regardless of the topic. Joseph Murphy tells of a young lady that had come to him for her lack of confidence when it came to meeting and dating young men. Those she had attracted were less than she had hoped for. Dr. Murphy explained how the Law Attraction worked, and how she had been projecting desperation and need rather projecting the values she had to bring to any meeting. He presented a very simple exercise for the young lady to do. He asked her to meditate her repeating to herself, “I am loved, appreciated and wanted,” and every time it came to mind to say it again. The transformation in her began almost immediately. The air of confidence shown forth even in the way she walked. The people and men she came in contact with were happy to be with her. Her relationships on her job improved immensely, and not too long after that she was planning for an engagement party. Being loved, appreciated and wanted transformed her whole countenance. She went from a frightened and insecure person to a confident and buoyant individual. Affirmations are powerful. What is it that you are projecting that you would like to change? The Bible says, “Come boldly to the throne of Grace.” Be bold and claim that very thing you might have thought you lacked. Courageous people don’t deny that there is fear, but they don’t give it power. Move forward with resolve and you won’t be disappointed. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
