Footprints on the Sands of Our Minds Dr. Leo Piscuilli retires after 55 years of mindful work By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Seldom do you get to meet a person with such a keen knowledge and awareness of human beings and their lives. Dr. Leo Pisculli is just such a person however. Following an extraordinarily rich career in psychiatry (the field of medicine dealing with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders), around the world, Dr. Pisculli is taking off from his doctor's office after 44 years, and taking up other pursuits in retirement. It was the “last thing on earth that I would be a psychiatrist,” says Dr. Pisculli, who had just seen his last patient in his 44-year career. He wanted to be a “country doctor,” or surgeon, while he was in medical school. In his mind's eye, he was going to be the one doctor in a small Adirondack town, in New York state. “That was it, my one thought, I could take over this position, as country doctor.” All of his friends were planning to be psychiatrists. He played “the devil's advocate,” with the notion, “that's not real medicine.” In the 1950s, Dr. Pisculli describes, the field of psychiatry “didn't do much. Not much in the way of medication.” But, with time, Dr. Pisculli discovered, “Psychiatric patients were fascinating.” The more interesting this field of study became, the more interested Dr. Pisculli became in turn. Dr. Pisculli attended New Jersey's Seton Hall School of Medicine, and while he was working on his medical degree, he worked for a urologist for three years in what he says was an “ex-tern” program, and he came to California between his junior and senior year. He traveled around the country trying to find the best place for college and medicine. While in California, he visited Los Angeles County General hospital, one of the largest medical facilities on the West Coast. He talked with the interns there, and “saw all aspects” of medicine. The philosophy at LA County General then was, “See one, do one, teach one,” as it applied to the practice of medicine, and the interns working toward residency. Following graduation in 1960, Dr. Pisculli set off to do his residency at LA County General, and his last two years he finished up at Cedars of Lebanon; he finished his residency in 1964. During the post World War II years, (spanning the end of the Korean War, and before the Vietnam War) Dr. Pisculli was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Navy. The Berry Plan, created mid-1950s (Vietnam conflict period military program which allowed physicians to defer obligatory military service until they had completed medical school and residency training) allowed doctors, like Dr. Pisculli, to finish their medical work. Then, in 1961, the Berlin Crisis occurred, and those who were in internships were drafted. Dr. Pisculli was immune. And, Dr. Pisculli notes, “residents didn't make that much money,” about $2400 a year. Dr. Pisculli married in 1962, and spent his work nights at the protective juvenile facility, MacClaren Hall, in El Monte, CA for three years. The Cuban Missile Crisis, in 1962, “activated” another “set of orders,” for Dr. Pisculli. He was the medical doctor for a Marine howitzer battalion, and then another “set of orders” from the Navy arrived. And, Dr. Pisculli went to the Navy as a psychiatrist, and he sought out the one person in Washington D.C. who could find what was available in 1964, to work overseas. He was told he could go to “Guantanamo Bay” (Cuba), Saigon (city in Vietnam), or Subic Bay (west coast of the island of Luzon in the Philippines). If he chose Subic Bay, he could take his family (his wife, and his two very small children, one of whom had been born three months premature) and there was a great deal of WWII history to be found there. So, Dr. Pisculli moved to Subic Bay in July of 1964. “It was an exciting time,” notes Dr. Pisculli. He was the only psychiatrist from Japan to

Subic Bay, and “all of the casualties came to Subic Bay.” He witnessed soldiers “scared out of their wits,” and also saw some “drug-induced hypnosis,” which provided for some astonishing medical results. And, while working at Subic Bay, the Navy sent another psychiatrist to assist with the work, and this “expanded the psychiatry,” Dr. Pisculli recalls. The doctors were “able to do more work,” including beginning group therapy. Dr. Pisculli was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, while at Subic Bay, and he traveled around the Far East for a time. Back in California, in the later part of the 1960s, Dr. Pisculli worked with the Los Angeles Veteran Administration hospital, and although the “influx of the Vietnam” soldiers had not arrived at the LA VA, there were an “abundance” of WWII and Korean War patients, and Dr. Pisculli found the work there to be discouraging. He followed this experience up with work at a private practice, and did all the inpatient work. And, it was while working in the private clinic, in 1974, that he ran across an ad in a psychiatry magazine for Bishop, CA. “There was no brochure,” Dr. Pisculli laughs as he recalls. You had to “come up and see” for yourself. Well, it was November, and “it rained and snowed all the way up.” He adds, “There was no mental health here, for a year, and it [mental health / medicine] had disintegrated.” Dr. Pisculli returned, initially only seeing patients a couple of days a week, and then in 1975, he became the eastern Sierra's doctor of psychiatry, seeing patients from “two to 100years-old.” “It's small, Bishop, very much like Subic Bay,” an island of sorts, “with a desert surrounding.” He and his family (four children) moved to Bishop, and became permanent residents. He didn't “specialize” in any one form of psychiatry, either, and he saw patients in eastern California and western Nevada. The state of California realized community health programs needed funding, Dr. Pisculli explains, and in the 1970s, group therapy and other important programs expanded. Other therapists applied to work in the region, and eventually, he adds, “many went off to their own private practices.” “I worked until I turned 85 [years old],” Dr. Pisculli says. He had trimmed his practice down to two days a week towards the end of his career. “It's never, ever boring,” he adds, with a knowing smile. “I could continue, for interest sake.” And, there's no doubt about it, he probably will continue to be in some sort of mindful work. Probably, like a country doctor....

Measles is back in a big way! After being declared eliminated in the United States in the year 2000, 555 cases have been reported in the United States as of 04/11/2019, with outbreaks also occurring in numerous other countries. Most of the affected people are unvaccinated residents of New York, Washington, California, Michigan, and New Jersey. In California as of 04/11/2019 there have been 21 reported cases. Butte County has been most affected. Measles is a serious disease and many affected people have been hospitalized, sometimes requiring intensive care. Measles can be fatal and when the brain is involved (measles encephalitis) may cause permanent brain damage. Before a vaccine was developed for measles 3 to 4 million cases in the U.S. were reported annually, with 48,000 hospitalizations, 1000 cases of measles-related encephalitis and 400 to 500 deaths. In 1963 a safe and effective vaccine became available which greatly reduced the number of cases. Over time measles cases decreased so much that in the year 2000 measles was considered eliminated in the US, although it remained a common illness in many parts of the world. Since 2000 United States measles cases can usually be traced back to a someone who got infected in another country. Measles is highly contagious. Measles is spread through coughing and sneezing and the airborne virus can infect people indoors for up to 2 hours after an infected person has been coughing and sneezing. Measles is so contagious that 90 percent of unvaccinated persons exposed to the virus will develop measles. What are the signs and symptoms, you may ask? Symptoms typically develop 1 to 2 weeks after exposure and may include: • High fever (first symptom) • Cough • Runny nose • Red, watery eyes • Small white or bluish spots or bumps in the mouth • Rash (appears a few days after the other symptoms, starting on head and face and spreading to the rest of the body) People infected with measles are contagious for about 5 days before they begin to feel sick, and for about 4 days after the rash appears. Should you or your child develop symptoms that may be measles it is important to see your medical provider promptly because measles is a serious threat to self, family and our communities. You should call your clinic or doctor’s office Public Health before arrival, as they may want to evaluate you in the parking lot or have you come in a side door to reduce possible spread to other people. Should you have any questions please contact the Mono County Health Department at (760) 924-1830

The Merry Fishmas weekend concluded with wonderful weather, and some lucky catches. The annual Eastern Sierra Trout Opener Media Reception, held at the Bishop Country Club and Golf Course, invited media people and top angling pros to the dinner. It was Fishmas Eve, April 26, and judging from the smiles on the faces of those who won some very nice prizes, the event was a big success. Bishop's Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, and many other local businesses, resorts, and regional organizations were Fishmas ambassadors at the media dinner.

The Use of Mind
by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science
The Purpose of Prayer Prayer is the most powerful of the tools we have to effect improvement in all situations and circumstances. We have read of or heard how the lame can walk, the blind see and even the dead rise from there sleep; all a result of effective prayer. All of these healings are wonderful, however; it seems what constitutes effective prayer has not been widely understood, or not disseminated. Somehow, the practice of prayer has been to attempt Spirit to grant or intervene for a desired result, as if God was a reluctant participant until the pleading prayer convinced him to the side of the one praying.. The purpose of prayer is not to change the mind of Perfection, but for the one praying to think from a higher standpoint; to see beyond the limitations; to embody the wholeness. The best healer is the one that sees nothing to heal. Too often prayer is said for the sick or infirm, which is admirable, but the mind of the one praying has not been altered to envision the healing requested. Jesus told his followers that when you pray believing you can have what you believe. If all is dependent on a hope for a healing, rather than seeing it done, it is not effective. Reverend Ike gave a classic example of prayer for a new automobile. He said he would sit in a comfortable chair and quietly bring to mind the make, model, and color of the car he desired. He got all his senses involved. He could smell the new car smell, he listened to the stereo sound system, he felt the leather seats and pictured himself driving down the streets filled with admirers turning to see his new car. He was totally involved with the solution and didn’t allow room in his mind for doubts or negative scenarios. Paul said to pray without ceasing, and every word out of your mouth is a prayer. God or the Life Principle of the whole Universe is not poor, weak, sordid, miserable, jealous, angry, anxious, and uncertain or in any way limited. Knowing it for God we should also know it for ourselves. Created in the Image and after the Likeness of the Divine, we have the same attributes. What is true of God is true of you. At one time there was a question of whether a practitioner should pray for someone that had not requested prayer. My wife, a Religious Science minister and practitioner responded to the question thusly, “Since prayer elevates the consciousness of the one praying, as well of the one being prayed for; I want no sickness in my mind. I want no needy in my mind. I want wholeness and gratification to fill my consciousness. If I pray without request from someone, I am not sorry for their healing or alleviation of their troubles.” Athletes the world over practice a form of visualization where they see themselves running faster, throwing farther, jumping higher or coming across the finish line first. This too is prayer. See yourself a peak performance. See your great day unfold before it unfolds. Don’t prepare for the worst, because that will be what you are asking for. Spirit and you are One. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
