Congratulations New Citizens Official ceremony celebrates citizenship at Manzanar

New citizens pose for their first official photographs as Americans, following the May 10, 2019 ceremony and oath at Manzanar National Historic Site. By Christina Reed The Hired Pen “To be a good citizen, it's important to be able to put yourself in other people's shoes and see the big picture. If everything you see is rooted in your own identity, that becomes difficult or impossible”--Eli Pariser – – – – Eastern Sierra, CA—Last week, 27 individuals, from 11 countries, became US citizens at Manzanar National Historic Site during a special ceremony held for the fourth year. Expressing feelings of pride, legitimacy, success, freedom and hope, these newly minted citizens culminated what has been a long process for many. To

become a US citizen you have to have a permanent resident card for at least five years, or for a least three years if you're filing as the spouse of a US citizen. You must be 18 years old, and be able to read, write, and speak basic English, and you must be a person of good moral character. These qualifications along with following through with the ten-step naturalization process determine your eligibility to become an American citizen. Part of the naturalization process involved taking the citizenship test, and an oral exam. There are 100 questions on the US Constitution test, and randomly, the officials can pick any 10 of these questions to ask you. It should also be noted that immigrants involved with cannabis, of any sort, can make them disqualified for the citizenship certificate. The application is about $800 to begin the process, which for many took them to places far beyond the eastern Sierra to enable them to be a part of the oath of citizenship.

The Sierra Reader caught up with José García, who said he's been waiting for this special moment in his adult life for a long time. “This is a very emotional moment, I've been waiting for 30 years,” said García. He arrived in the US, from Mexico, in October 1989, and “I wasn't planning on staying in the country,” he added. But, life has its ways, and he found work, at Manzanar National Historic Site, ironically, for a time, help-

José García became a US citizen, May 10, along with 26 others, from 11 different countries. ing to build the auditorium, and front reception desk. Looking back, he noted he wanted to stay in the US, where his children were born (US citizens), and he added, “I wanted a better life for my children.” Today, García said, he is a full part of the country, “realizing a dream.” He joined others in the “accomplishment of becoming a part of the country,” as immigrants have done for so many decades. “I want to contribute,” he concluded. “Make it [America] even greater.” García has been a part of the Bishop Union High School Latino Club; he helped form the Latino Village for the Millpond Music Festival (2011); he has been a board member of the Inyo Council of the Arts; he has been a working part of La Causa, a group of individuals who work at voicing out the Hispanic community (Hispanic Voices for Community Improvement) and he was the founding member of the group, receiving the Outstanding Person of the Year in 2013, and he has been a working member of the City of Bishop's planning commission for six years.

Congratulations to all the new citizens of the US The Citizenship Ceremony was held on May 10, 2019, and special US Citizenship and Immigration Services' officials attended the ceremony and oath, including USCIS San Bernardino Field Office Director Irene Martin, Manzanar Superintendent Bernadette Johnson, Assistant Regional Director of USCIS, Ellen Woo, Field Office Director from USCIS, Lynn Feldman, and Manzanar Community Volunteer Ambassador, Fatima Khan. Following the ceremony, Inyo County's Clerk / Recorder, Kammi Foote, and Chuck Levin, from Los Angeles, signed the new citizens up to vote.

The Sierra Reader is covering business briefs, anniversaries, and events in the Eastern Sierra, California, and neighboring Nevada. Send us your stories and events at mesatink.aol.com

Protect yourself against mosquito bites and disease Mosquitoes are annoying but can also carry diseases. Local authorities expect large numbers of mosquitoes in our area this spring due to lots of snowmelt and runoff. West Nile Virus has affected people in the Eastern Sierra in recent years, although to date it remains uncommon. Currently public health experts are monitoring the spread of invasive Aedes mosquitoes such as the Aedes aegypti, and albopictus which have been introduced into the United States from other countries and established themselves from San Diego to the Central Valley. Invasive Aedes mosquitoes can also spread other viral diseases that we would rather not have in our region, including dengue, yellow fever, Zika and Chikungunya. Fortunately, none of these viruses are currently known to be transmitted within California, but thousands of people are infected with these viruses in other parts of the world, including in Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Asia. Owens Valley Mosquito Abatement Program staff work with state and local health departments to monitor what mosquito species are present and whether they are carrying diseases that may be transmitted to humans or livestock. Mosquitoes are trapped throughout the summer at selected locations around the Eastern Sierra and sent to public health labs for testing. Residents can help control these insects by: • Eliminating pools of standing water used for breeding by mosquitoes around their yard and neighborhood. Many mosquitoes do not fly very far so the mosquitoes plaguing your yard may be coming from nearby. Check any areas that may contain standing wate. • Keep mosquitoes outside. Screen doors and windows where possible and check their condition occasionally. • Use Insect repellents. Insect repellents reduce the chance of being bitten and will also generally repel ticks and other biting creatures. Use and follow the label of an EPA-registered insect repellent that includes one of the following active ingredients: • DEET • Picaridin • IR3535 • Oil of lemon eucalyptus • Para-menthane-diol, • 2-undecanone. EPA-registered insect repellents are proven to be safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women when used as directed. There appears to be no advantage to using DEET concentrations above 50%. Do not use insect repellent on babies younger than 2 months old. Instead, dress them in clothing that covers their arms and leg and use covers over strollers and baby carriers. Adults should spray insect repellent onto their hands and rub onto child’s face. Don’t apply repellent to child’s hands, eyes, mouth or irritated skin. • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants for additional protection. In higher risk areas, such as during international travel to places with significant rates of malaria or mosquito-borne viruses, consider treating clothes with permethrin. The Culex mosquitoes that can carry West Nile Virus are mostly active at dusk and dawn so mosquito avoidance measures are particularly valuable at those times. • For more information on avoiding mosquitoes and staying healthy, please visit the California Department of Public Health website to Fight The Bite! Please report mosquito problems to the Owens Valley Mosquito Abatement Program by calling: (760) 873-7853.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

The Fountain of Life Ernest Holmes said, “There is a Power in this Universe that is greater than we are, and we can use it.” Actually, we are using that Power all of the time even though many are ignorant or unaware about it. That Power responds to our use of it There is a natural flow of life flowing through us, and if unblocked will deliver peace, love and joy into life. Doubt, fear, uncertainty, anxiety and a sense of insecurity can so congest our mental life that goodness hardly flows at all. Jesus said there was a Fountain of Life from which your life is drawn, and if you will unstop every thing in your mind that congests this Fountain you will be whole. The Power Holmes spoke of and the Fountain of Life are tied together when the Flow is not inhibited the Power of wholeness and joy of living is enhanced, however; if the negative congest ants are deployed the Flow of Life is all but choked off. Jesus had a very simple message, “Clear your mind of everything that doubts the existence of God, live as though Love was the great Reality , bless and curse not, and then accept and let be.” It is incredible how many people consider the very elements that will block your good to be normal and natural. A few years ago, I gave a similar message at a Sunday Morning Service. On exiting the church, one individual confided that he thought that worry for his loved ones showed how much he cared. He told me how that every time he hears a siren, he fears that one of his loved ones could be hurt or injured. I told him, the next time he hears a siren, picture in his mind the loved one arriving at their destination safe and sound. See his children happily playing. Picture them all whole, complete and perfect. His method of worry and fear and my method of looking to what are right and good are both utilizing that Power Holmes was talking about. I prefer to let the Fountain of Life to flow unimpeded. Don’t you? So, how do we get there? Many years ago, when I first married, I was not making a lot of money; I received a bill from the telephone company. That was not unusual. I received bills every month, but this bill was pink, and it read that if I did not pay within five days, they would turn off my phone. I immediately sank into a mire of worry, so much so that I became ill, and the longer time went by, the sicker I got. When I had reached the depths of despair I had a sudden change in consciousness. It came to me how silly this whole reaction was. I got up from my sick bed, drove to the phone company, worked out a payment plan, and resolved to never worry of a bill again, and I have not. Negative emotions, thoughts and words generate a negative picture and impede the Flow of Life. Let the Fountain flow freely! God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
