Getting Veterans’ Services Met 2022

Veterans’ Administration visits with first-ever Veterans Integrated Service Networks staff

California—There are an estimated 21 million veterans in the United States, and 1.8 million of them live in California. California veterans outnumber all other states for veteran numbers, and 90 percent of California’s veterans are male, over the age of 60 (more than 50 percent), and Vietnam veterans make up the “largest share of the veteran population. Younger veterans—those who began service after September 11, 2001—make up 15 percent of California’s veteran population,” according to the state’s Legislative Analyst’s Office (a nonpartisan office in charge of fiscal and policy advisor). “California’s veterans are more racially and ethnically diverse than veterans across the United States.” Seventeen percent are Hispanic or Latino, compared to seven percent nationally. One-third of Asian-American veterans live in California, compared with one percent nationally. Financially, California’s veterans’ median household income is $74,000, or $12,000 more than the estimated median household income overall for Californians. And the poverty levels for California vets in 2015 were lower at 7.5 percent compared with 14.3 percent of Californians overall. (Source: lao.ca.gov, which is the Legislative Analyst’s Office) Most veterans in California live in Southern California, and Los Angeles County, then San Diego County, followed by Sacramento County, and then Santa Clara, Alameda, and Contra Costa Counties. The eastern Sierra region, Inyo and Mono Counties, have less than 10,000 veterans. The eastern Sierra Counties lack the Federal Veterans Health Care Centers that the larger population centers have, and as such the VHA (Veterans Health Administration) tries to bridge large gaps in local veterans’ services. Available Support and Services for Local Veterans One way the local veterans’ services are being augmented is with traveling representatives of the Veterans Centers. Recently the local VFW Post #8988 (Veterans of Foreign Wars), Bishop, CA, invited staff to talk with veterans about what services are available at this time. Facilitated through Gordon Greene, Inyo and Mono Counties’ Veterans Services Officer, the visiting teams from the VA’s (Veterans Administration) Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISN) work with Greene locally. Greene began his important work in Inyo County in February 2021. Greene’s qualifications are available at www.inyocounty.us, and the office can be reached at 760-873-7850. Greene is an advocate for veterans in Inyo and Mono Counties. The VA’s VISN sent its first-ever service staff to Lone Pine and Bishop to meet with local vets (May 12-13, 2022). The VISN from Loma Linda, CA had a number of staff / directors available to talk about concerns, and the representatives also included staff from the High Desert Center in Victorville, CA. Services presented included: readjustment counseling; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Memorial Day (Remembering those who have fallen / died in battle or duty in service to their country) is coming up, Monday, May 30, and local businesses and community groups can choose to support our local veterans by purchasing an American Flag to post outside their enterprise. With this local support, many of those who are unable to speak, can be represented.
