Businesses get more green lights to reopen 2020 Inyo County receives green light to reopen businesses with approved modifications By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Inyo County, along with 22 other California counties, is allowed to expand on its Stage 2 businesses' reopening, and this means with approved public health modifications at the businesses (guidelines through the county), there will be dine-in restaurants and shopping. Inyo County filed for a local variance to the state's Stay-at-Home orders, and on May 15, the plan was approved. However, not all businesses will be able to open under Stage 2, including gyms, tattoo shops, nail salons, community centers, playgrounds, public pools, theaters, nightclubs, bars, hotels or leisure lodging / tourism (considered non essential travel), and live audience sports / entertainment. Preparing for the RV Summer Season RV services most in demand. Allen Outdoor has been in the area for decades, but Tim acknowledges they would like to promote being pro-active and getting recreational vehicles of all types both “ready to park for winter, when you are done with your last trip,” (sometime in September or October) to problem-solving before you are going out on your first trip in the spring. And, with some owners using their vehicles yearround, it's especially important to have that winter check-up to look at appliances, heaters, window and door frames, generator, solar panels, sewer equipment, water and fuel storage, and flooring and roofing. These check-up services also include horse trailers, Sprinter vans / custom offroad vehicles, and even some big rigs. Whether its stablizer for fuel systems during winter, or having your forced-air heater in your motor home or trailer completely cleaned out, winterization every year can save you in the longMemorial Day is Monday, May 25, and it is a day to honor those who died in the service run from costly, emergency of their country.
As the Eastern Sierra reopens for business, and as we look forward to getting back outdoors for recreations, Allen Outdoor, in Bishop, CA, can help with mobile RV repair, and RV supplies.Tim Allen, Brandon Helmbolt, and Mike Allen added the RV services in 2019 to the many other products (like UHaul rentals) and supplies Allen Outdoor is known for with the idea of tackling the
repairs...if you can find an experienced and mobile RV service tech in the first place. They recommend a once-ayear inspection of these important components in your RV. Tim and Brandon travel from Olancha to Bridgeport, and into western Nevada (Fish Lake Valley, NV), and being a mobile business has greatly expanded their ability to work with others. Mike orders supplies, and does research on the RV products, and Tim and Brandon install, repair, service, and problem-solve with two mobile trucks. Many of the repairs are done while you shop or attend to other things in town.
Earthquakes Shake Eastern Sierra and Western Nevada The largest earthquake in Nevada in 66 years hit the outskirts of Tonopah, Nevada, May 15, a little after 4 a.m. The 6.5 temblor was felt in many regions of the Eastern Sierra and western Nevada, and the aftershocks continue to happen, with a couple registering 5.0, and lots in the 4.0 range also. Parts of US Highway 95 were damaged during the quake, and repairs were completed by May 16. The quake occurred on a part of the Walker Lane Fault, which scientists say extends from the Mojave Desert in California, and follows (roughly), the US Highway 395 corridor, up the Eastern Sierra, and into Nevada and Oregon. Scientists also note this fault receives about 25 percent of the pressure of the two plates (North American and Pacific). (Source: University of Nevada Reno)

City proclaims May as Healthcare District Month As the world continues to celebrate healthcare workers, the City of Bishop chose to salute its local healthcare and first responders Monday night with a proclamation naming May as Healthcare District Month. This is not the first time the City recognized healthcare workers in May. For the past several years, the City set aside May as Healthcare District Month, and May traditionally housed National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week. The arrival of the Coronavirus indeed lent itself to expanding this recognition to include the first responders and county-based public healthcare staff who work alongside Northern Inyo Healthcare Dis-
trict. Kelli Davis, Interim Chief Executive Officer, told the council that this recognition focuses on all the community heroes, who are working tirelessly through the crisis at hand. “These first four months of 2020 have been very trying, frightening, and devastating throughout the United States and in our small communities through the Eastern Sierra due to the pandemic, Davis said. While many of the frontline workers are obviously our physicians and nurses, Davis noted that other often-unsung heroes contribute to the health and well-being of the community during trying times such as this. ers included: Northern Inyo Healthcare District’s Andrea Daniels, Denice Hynd, Dr. Stacey Brown, Jannalyn Lawrence, Krissy Alcala, Amy Stange, Janice Jackson, Genifer Owens, Emily Smith, Tanya DeLeo, and Scott Hooker; along with Symons Ambulance’s Judd Symons;
The 2020 Census is here – you count, so be counted! Filling out your Census questionnaire is very important and very easy. Federal funding for just about everything is tied to Census data, which is why we need to be counted locally. This funding is for schools, roads, food and healthcare programs, just to name a few. As we have been struggling through the Covid-19 pandemic the need for access to Federal funding for many things has become more important than ever. Some households have been receiving Census questionnaires at their street address since March. Others, who get their mail at a PO Box, will have to wait a little longer. Census workers will be dropping off questionnaires at residences that do not get mail at a street address from mid-June through July. Once you get your Census questionnaire, letter, or postcard you can respond to it in three different ways: 1) You can fill in the paper questionnaire and mail it back 2) You can give the Census your answers over the phone 3) You can complete the questionnaire online The questionnaire, letter, or postcard from the Census will have a 12-digit unique ID number on it. This ID number is associated with your street address. It is easiest to wait to get this number before you try to do your Census online or over the phone. To do your Census online go to: https://my2020census.gov/ If you need a language other than English go to the bottom of the page for different language options.

Mayor Smith said.

760-920-3487 Once you’re there, the first thing you will be asked for your 12-digit ID number. If you don’t have a 12-digit ID number click on “If you do not have a Census ID, click hereâ€? link. From here you will fill out questions about your address. Once you have completed those you will be taken to the Census questionnaire. Things to remember: • The questionnaire is very simple. There are four basic questions and seven easy questions about each person who was living with you on April 1, 2020 • Be sure to county everyone and anyone who was living with you on April 1, 2020 • The Census does not include a question about citizenship • The Census Bureau is required by law to keep Census data confidential. Census workers can be fined or sent to prison for violating confidentiality • Census workers will never ask you for your social security number or for money and will have Census identification. When you’re done, know that you have been counted and you have helped your community to get future funding!

#"! !$ In our community, we believe every person counts. And we believe!every person should get their fair share A big way our community gets money for programs is by participating in the U.S. Census. The +tate and *ederal government uses )ensus information to fund programs like child care, free and low-cost school lunches, and Medi-Cal.
Here are just a few reasons why your participation in the $ensus matters: When you and your kids are part of the $ensus count, the community receives its fair share of money for important programs like Medi-Cal, WIC, Head Start, the National School Lunch Program, CHIP, and child care.

California receives more than $115 billion every year based on $ensus data. We must count everyone so we don't lose these resources. The number of people California has in Congress is based on the $ensus count.

About the 2020 Census The U.S. Census happens once every ten years and counts every individual regardless of age in the country. Mandated by the Constitution, the 2020 Census is the 24th Census of the United States since 1790. One important use of the Census is to determine how many representatives each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. Currently California has 53 Representatives. The Census also provides information that elected officials, business owners, schools, libraries, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support to their communities. Every year, more than $1.5 trillion in federal funding is distributed based on Census data. This money goes to programs and services such as family and children nutritional programs, assistance for college costs, hospitals, public health departments, non-profits, fire departments, schools, roads and bridges, and other resources based on Census information. The Mammoth Lakes Library for instance is renovating a portion of its Children’s room into a welcoming ‘early learning’ space in which parents of very young children can come to listen to story times, explore books and learning games with their children, as well as meet and spend time with other parents of young children whenever the library is open. Offering bilingual books and story times is an important goal of the Library because it wants to make sure it will help both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking parents in our community inspire a love of reading in their children. In applying for the money to do this renovation, it was important that the Library could state that in the 2010 Census, over 29% of households in Mammoth Lakes had children in them and that in 2010 33.7% of Mammoth Lakes residents identified as hispanic or latino. If this Census information had been unavailable, it is very likely the money for the project would not have been received. “There’s no shortage of direct local funding impacts as a result of Mono County residents’ response to the Census” stated Mono County Supervisor Jennifer Kreitz. “I know firsthand, for example, that homeownership assistance and rental assistance programs are determined in large part by
Census figures for Mono County and Mammoth Lakes. If everyone that lives in Mono County takes just a few minutes to respond, our County will get far more Federal funds, which we need especially now in this time of pandemic response and dwindling resources.” As of mid-May, over 60% of households in California have responded to the Census. However, only 12.7% of households in Mono County have responded, the lowest response rate of any county in the state. The response rate in the Town of Mammoth Lakes is only 7.3%! The Census will not be mailing paper forms to households who receive their mail at a post office box. This affects a large number of households in Mono County and is one reason why our self-response rate is so low at this time. Luckily, you can choose to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone, in Spanish or English. The Census form asks a few simple questions, like age, sex, and the number of people who live in your home, including children. Responding online is the easiest and fastest way to complete the 2020 Census – and it is safe and secure. Simply go to “2020Census.gov” and follow the green “Respond” button to answer the questions. You can switch from English to Spanish by choosing the language in the upper right corner of the screen. It will take about 10-15 minutes to complete the form. To respond by telephone in Spanish, call 844-468-2020. To respond by telephone in English, call 844-330-2020. Beginning in May, Census takers will begin to visit homes that have not yet completed the 2020 Census to make sure everyone is counted. The best way to avoid an in-person visit is to complete the Census online or by telephone. It is important for the accuracy of the data that each Census response includes the number of people that live in a household including those who are not citizens of the United States. The Census does not ask to designate the citizenship status of anyone in the household. The Census will never ask for Social Security numbers, bank or credit card numbers, money or donations, or anything related to political parties. The Census Bureau will not share your individual
household response information with law enforcement, nor will your response impact anyone’s eligibility for government benefits. The law requires the Census Bureau to protect and keep confidential everyone’s personal information. Any household completing their 2020 Census can feel comfortable that their information will be kept safe and not used against them. If you want more information on false rumors circulating about the Census, you can find them here: https://2020census.gov/es/ne ws-events/rumors.html Because of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Census may be one of the most important Census
counts in our history. The accuracy of the count will help your community receive important resources for the
coming ten years. Help raise Mono County’s response rate from lowest in California to the highest by using
the online information or telephone information above and tell your friends and neighbors!
