Memorial Day ceremonies and Mule Days turns 50 the red poppy flower. – – – We cherish too, the poppy red That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies, That blood of heroes never dies. – – – Please observe this day of honor for those fallen in the service of our country by placing flags on graves, and flying flags appropriately. A "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution (from 2000) asks us all to give a moment of thought and respect at 3 PM on Monday, May 27, and if we can, to listen to Taps.

The first laying of flowers on soldiers' graves--a Memorial Day tradition--was to the cemetery of both Confederate and Union soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia (on May 30, 1868). OBITUARIES Carl Pearce March 15, 1935 – May 15, 2019 Carl Pearce was a cowboy, rodeo contestant, rancher, dude wrangler, horseman, chef, farmer, athlete, college graduate, soldier, aviator, coach, paratrooper, restaurateur, investment broker, Rotarian, insurance broker, family man, local philanthropist, cancer survivor, confidant, friend, father, husband, and self-made man. Carl was born in Portland, Oregon on March 15, 1935 and passed away May 15, 2019. He graduated Bishop High school where he was actively involved with the agriculture program and where he excelled in football and basketball. He could consistently sink a basketball from half court and was often called upon in clutch situations to bring the team to a win. He participated in rodeo winning many awards, including the 1952 Bishop Homecoming calf roping contest and the wild cow riding championship at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. After High School graduation Carl attended a year at Pierce Junior college where he played basketball. He transferred to UC Davis and graduated in 1958. He was in the top of his Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program class which provided unique opportunities afforded to the best in the military. While in the Army he married Arlene Brierly and they moved to Fort Lewis, Washington where Carl served with the 4th Aviation Division. He flew the tandem rotor H-21, known as the flying banana, and was the first group of Army aviators to transition from piston powered helicopters to turbine helicopters receiving training in the historic Huey Helicopter. He survived 3 helicopter accidents during his flying career. Two of those accidents were significant, and one was a minor accident. He flew helicopters in Alaska as part of the government’s concern over potential invasion by Russia through Alaska. Carl was honorably discharged from the Army as a Captain in 1963 when he returned to Bishop with his family Arlene, Mark, Hugh, and Rob to work for the Brierly Ranch. Carl worked several years on the Brierly Ranch, farming, irrigating, and working cattle. During that time, he decided to move on to other opportunities and joined New York Life Insurance Company in 1966. He also later went into business with Johnny Morris at the Embers Restaurant. He was an agent with New York Life Insurance Company for 50 years. He achieved many awards with them over the years including President’s Council and Million Dollar Round Table. lence, and was in short “a huge part” of the local community. He served as Inyo County Cattlemen’s president and was a California Cattlemen’s Association Director. He gave freely of his time and money to many local causes and people in need. Carl loved life, he enjoyed entertaining people at his home, dining with friends, and helping people in need. He relished fine dining and a good glass of wine. He loved animals; his Emmy Lou and Rachel were his constant companions. He was proceeded in death by his son Hugh Pearce, grandparents Thurman and Grace Wilkerson, father Frank Pearce, mother Alma Mack, step father Gerald Mack, step mother Macel Pearce, and brothers Frank and Stan. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Arlene; sons Rob and Mark; daughter in-law Lee Ann; siblings Eddie and Anne; nieces and nephews Vickie, Cole, and Joan; grandchildren Mario and Marina, and many other cousins and shirt tail relatives. Special thanks go to Crystal, Norma, Silvia, and Lala, who helped care for Carl in the last part of his life when he was in ill health. Special thanks to Terri Dean for many years working with Carl and being a close part of the family. They all are part of the family. Carl lived an honorable and good life. He was the epitome of a self-made man. He came from very humble beginnings, worked hard to obtain an education, and built a successful business, raised a family, served his country and community, and was a good friend to many. He will be missed. Graveside services will be held at the Pioneer (West Line Street) Cemetery, Wednesday, May 29, at 11 a.m. A reception lunch will follow. The reception location to be announced at the service. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made in Carl’s memory to the Laws Railroad Museum (Bishop Museum and Historical Society), P.O. Box 363; Bishop, CA 93514.
Emilie Suzanne “Suzi” Carter Suzi Carter, a lifelong Bishop resident lost her battle against breast cancer on May 12, 2019. After 4 ½ years of relentlessly and courageously fighting her battle with metastasized breast cancer she passed away peacefully at the Hoffman Hospice Home in Bakersfield surrounded by her loving family. Suzi was born in Bishop, California on May 5, 1959 to Roy Heslington and Emily Milovich. She is a member of a longtime pioneer family; her Grandmother and Grandfather were the late Mijo Milovich and Margherita Rossi Servanti Milovich. Suzi married Tom “TC” Carter on August 2, 1980 in Bishop, California. They raised two daughters Lacey Suzanne Hagar and Carlee Michelle Meador. She attended Bishop School System graduating from Bishop Union High School in 1977. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Management and Strategy from Western Governors University. She began her working career with the United States Forest Service and then went over to Caltrans and remained there until her retirement on May 5, 2018 that was forced after 27 years by her illness. Suzi was very invested in her community. She served for years on Bishop Elementary School Board, was instrumental putting on the Tri County Fair under the direction of Jimmy Tatum, worked on the Bobby Socks Softball League, 4-H, Junior Livestock Committee, Girl Scouts, Altrusa and did Court Investigating for the Inyo County Court System. Suzi was a very spiritual person and has many family members to greet her at Heaven’s gate. She will be celebrating with the Angels now and will be awaiting the others to follow and help them over. Suzi will always be remembered by her infectious smile, bubbly personality, extreme thoughtfulness, encouraging words, dedication to her family and her “never give up” attitude, she touched so many lives that she crossed paths with. Suzi is survived by her husband Tom “TC” Carter of 38 years of marriage, daughter Lacey Hagar and husband Jordan, Carlee Meador and husband Jason along with granddaughter Jaylee Meador all of Bakersfield. Sisters Michelle Denault of Bishop and Jimmi Rae Heslington of Clovis; Brother Kim Heslington of Sparks, Nevada along with her beloved Aunt Christine Dodd of Reedley. She is survived and loved by her nephews Jason Denault and wife Corrie and Bill Denault of Bishop; Great-niece Rylie Denault of Bishop; special cousins Denise Gillespie and family of Bishop, Wyman Dodd and family of Kingsburg, Father-In-Law Chuck Carter and wife Penny of Bishop, and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents and Brother-In-Law Bill Denault. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staffs of CBCC, Cedars-Sinai, and Hoffman Hospice of Bakersfield for the exceptional care that they all gave to Suzi during her illness. The compassion and care that she received at the Hoffman Hospice Home was phenomenal and her comfort was always their top priority. Donations in Suzi’s memory would be greatly appreciated at the Hoffman Hospice Home at 4401 Buena Vista Road, Bakersfield, California 93311. Graveside services were held May 18th at the Pioneer Cemetery.

Rev. Freda Lindsay, Minister Rev. Dr. Walt Sharer Sunday Service: 10 am Meditation: 9:40 am Wednesday 5:30 pm: Prayer Group Practitioners: Rev. Dr. Juanella Evans Science of the Mind: Philosophy, a faith, a way of Life. Use the teachings each day to enrich your life.

The Use of Mind
by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science
Creative Mind “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the waters.” (Genesis 1:1-2) Creative Mind was activated by Spirit and brought forth the cosmos. This was on the macro scale, which is only right and proper for God, however; that very same Creative Mind works the same, on our micro scale of operations. Ernest Holmes wrote. ”Creative Mind of itself has no specific intention as far as we as individuals are concerned. We give it the only intention It has for us, and the fact that we find ourselves in confused and limited circumstances, instead of disproving the theory, is positive proof of it.” It is no wonder there is confusion about God. Most faiths have portrayed the Divine as a harsh taskmaster, and the slightest infraction of the rules can lead to a very painful death. Even though they profess that God is Love they had to invent another guy to take the wrap for the evil in the world. My teacher used to say, “If there is a devil, he is on God’s payroll. When we reach the point where we can look at all that had been created, and call it good; we can reverse the process of what Creative Mind will produce. The whole story of Adam and Eve shows how the introduction of evil and limitation lead to their expulsion from the consciousness of good. They had to leave Paradise; else they would contaminate it with confused thinking. The Allness of Good is pure and does not mix with limitation. One student asked, “How do I look on something evil and call it good?”It is not like calling white black, or vice versa. Things do not appear in your world of experience randomly, they were attracted like a moth to a flame,” I explained. Holmes said, “When we reverse the process and start with the proposition of the Allness of Good and logically present to Mind the idea that Good is the only Power, we shall see definite changes take place in outward manifestation.” No one wants to hear that they have invited negation and limitation into their life, however; when you get right down to it; some how in some way, you have. It is often not one thought, and as such, it maybe clusters of thoughts, and it behooves us to pluck out the rotten fruit and leave the good intact. The ole’ saying says, “One bad apple can spoil the whole barrel. A change in your thinking will change your life. Because we have been subjected to lifetime of the knowledge of good and evil, we must begin to see that evil is a contraction of good. It is not necessarily what we desire, but it is what we directed Creative Mind to bring into our life. There is nobody or no thing to blame, however; there is a place for which to work, and there is no place to stop. Like Diogenes looking for an honest man, we must be honest with ourselves to make progress in your endeavor. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
