Memorial Day 2022 Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly
May 26 – June 1, 2022
Rendering respect for the fallen in the service of their country By Christina Reed The Hired Pen
“I think, what has this day brought me, and what have I given it”---Henry Moore Eastern Sierra, CA—Memorial Day ceremonies will be held on Monday, May 30, 2022, at 11 a.m., at a number of cemeteries across the eastern Sierra. These solemn events are to honor those military service members who have given their lives in the service of their country. And, Memorial Day is often overlooked in the vacationing travelers, and residents away from home. “Honoring Those Who Served” Locally, in Inyo and Mono Counties, a combination of veterans’ organizations, including the American Legion Post #118 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #8988, assist in presenting these time- honored ceremonies. There are special speakers, the posting of the colors, tributes, and Taps is played for those fallen in battle or service. Families gather quietly to pay their respects to their loved ones, and it’s a very moving ceremony, with moments of silence, no distractions (like cell phones), and everyone’s attention is on what is being said about these valiant people, who gave the full measure of their lives for their country. Both the American Legion Post #118 and VFW Post #8988 also arrange for full military funeral services for fallen veterans, and this is another important honor these veterans’ organizations carry on into our local history. Military funeral honors usually have two or more uniformed service members folding and presenting a U.S. Burial flag to the family, and playing Taps. “A gun salute by a rifle squad is reserved for veterans who retired from military service, for service members killed on ac-

tive duty, and Medal of Honor recipients.” (www. calvet.ca.gov) The American Legion Post #118, in concert with the VFW Post #8988, post flags along streets in Bishop, CA, in honor of the fallen service members. It’s an honor the two veterans’ organizations take very seriously, and some of these flags bear a special dog tag, which identifies the name, rank and years of service, of the fallen service member. Daniell White, President of the Auxiliary for the American Legion Post #118, has been taking care of the flags for 17 years, with 10 special dog tag flags now posted during six special events throughout the year. White can be contacted by (760-873-5839) businesses to purchase a pole and flag, and these veterans’ organizations then post and take down the flags at the end of the event / day. White explains that private citizens’ homes are not included in the flag program, and she adds, there would be too large a number of flags to maintain and post. How-

ever, private citizens can display their American flag properly on such important days, and remember to take a moment to honor those who served. The flags are displayed during Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, July the 4th, Labor Day, and Veterans’ Day along the streets and Main Street in Bishop; this honored task represents the shared and collaborative efforts of both the American Legion Post #118 and the VFW Post #8988, depending on which streets you are looking at the flags presented on. White notes that the flags are special, and she keeps the “brightest flags” presented, until they fade. Then, the flag is “retired” from service. In Bishop, posting the flags occur on South Main Street (both sides) to the Allen’s Outdoor business and East and West Line Streets (to NIH hospital) by the American Legion Post #118, and North Main Street, both sides, are predominately posted by the VFW Post #8988.

Gee Haw! Welcome to Mule Days 2022
Bishop, CA—Welcome to Mule Days 2022, and get ready for a week-long adventure in the eastern Sierra. Known for its originality, and spontaneous and zany events, Mule Days was created in 1969 by a group of High Sierra packing outfits, and local businesses. The events take place throughout the town of Bishop, CA, and the Tri-County Fairgrounds is the place to catch all of the mule-related activities. Most of the mule activity in the Owens Valley area had been centered in the High Sierra during the summer, with the outstanding pack stations of the region. The community seldom saw these fine animals, and Mule Days was an attempt to bring to Bishop and the public, the many fine mule people and showcase the versatility of the mules. The light-hearted antics of the Mule Days’ parade feature the pack stations and the mule show participants, and the parade is the country’s largest non-motorized event. What is a mule? The mule is a hybrid, the offspring of a male donkey (a jack) and a female horse (a mare), and with different numbers of chromosomes; horses and donkeys are different species. Then there is a hinny, which is the offspring of a male horse and a female donkey, and these animals are more uncommon, and tend to have the long ears of the mother. Mules are sterile (99.9 percent of the time), and it’s rare for a female mule to give birth. Mules live longer than horses, and eat less, making them very
hardy animals. Despite being told people can be “stubborn as a mule,” donkeys are actually more stubborn. And, the mule’s hooves are tough and look different from those of a horse, and a mule’s hooves are able to stand up to the rocky trails of the High Sierra. American history wouldn’t be complete without the help of the mule. A vital part of the development of canal systems, farming and transportation, the mule brought people to the gold fields of California, and pulled wagons in the steady movement West. The eastern Sierra’s history is rich in tales of the mules, and the herculean efforts at the borax mines (20-mule team), and the building of the Los Angeles Department of Power and Water’s aqueducts / systems. Mules are a part of military campaigns, including in Afghanistan (in particular, “Charlie Wilson’s” war efforts, providing mules to the Afghan Freedom Fighters in 1986) and Iraq. Mule Days showcases many of these mule endeavors, and brings together people from across America. It’s a chance to see English show jumpers, western pleasure riding, mule packing teams, mule shoeing competitions, buggies and wagons, and big teams of horses and mules working the arenas, and a huge variety of the mule species on display. Some mules are enormous, and some are small. But mule people will tell you, “Anything a horse can do, a mule can do better.” Enjoy!

The Toggery is Celebrating 100 Years of Fine Western Wear By Christina Reed The Hired Pen
B
ishop, CA--The small town of Bishop in the eastern Sierra was bustling with business and new fireproof buildings of concrete were coming to life. The Main Street frontage including part of the Valley View Hotel were changing from frame to concrete, and on September 21, 1922, The Toggery opened up its new haberdashery. Owners Mr. R.W. Eldred and Mr. W.H. Koch had successfully moved from their temporary home at the Clark Hotel to the spacious new store, complete with a three-chair barber shop. And, The Toggery settled in for its Main Street prominence as “One of the Sierra’s Better Known Stores.” One hundred years later, owners Bill and Leslie Witt, are celebrating their “amazing journey,” and welcoming visitors and residents to a classic western wear and accessories store. Witt says the store has “made transitions” with the times. However, the store remains “respectful of its history and authenticity.” Back in the 1920s, Union Carbide miners and ranchers with huge fruit orchards purchased their work pants, gloves and Justin boots from the store with the black-stripes on white awning. Towns folk were fitted for wedding tuxedos and Homecoming attire, and handsome Stetson and Resistol hats adorned the shelves above the men’s fine woolen Pendleton shirts with pearly snap buttons. Carosels of elegant belts and hat bands remind you that looking your best still matters in the daily lives of the valley residents. A stroll through the store today doesn’t look much different from the early days when “Alex” M.D. Alexander bought
the store in 1961. Although, the popular Acme “Drover” boots for boys and girls no longer cost $12.95 (Exerpt from an ad on December 3, 1964 in the Inyo Register), the store is still well known for its pretty, free gift wrapping. The staff are very knowledgeable about the latest styles and fits, and the store still “expects to give high-grade service, at reasonable prices.” (Exerpt from an ad on September 21, 1922 in the Inyo Register). Ladies apparel is now about 40 percent of the store’s clientèle, and Witt adds, about 40 to 50 percent of the business is still the local community and tourism. Witt is pleased to be “doing right for the community,” and the store will be represented in the Kruse wagon, with Jerry Tindell (Horse and Mule School clinics) as the muleteer / teamster. The Toggery remains an enduring store and the staff still proudly accept hand-written orders from customers addressed to the “Western Store in Bishop.” The Toggery continues to carry a wide selection of quality women’s wear, stylish perfumes, Minnetonka footwear, and pretty pink little girls’ cowboy boots. The valley residents continue to touch the colorful Indian patterned Pendleton blankets and envision how the warm woolen material will fit into a family member’s home decor. And customers are still being fitted for their weddings, high school rodeo debuts, and Mule Days parade appearances. The Toggery fits into small town life, and Witt says, the store is “impeccably clean. Neat as a pin. And, better today,” with “slightly different offerings.” * Note: Haberdashery from 1547 when a British haberdasher was a dealer in men’s clothing, accessories and notions.

Road Trips and Places of Note
By Christina Reed The Hired Pen
E
astern Sierra, CA—Mule Days takes place in a region of California known for its extremes in landscape, mountains, deserts, weather, and beauty. The eastern side of California, called the Wild Side of California, offers many sightseeing, shopping, and outdoor adventures. And, getting out into the wilder side of things means being more prepared than you might be in a city-setting. Be Prepared For Road Trips! Take a look at the weather forecast to prepare for these outings, and bring an emergency back-up plan as well. Keep in mind, many places you might visit outside of towns, won’t have cell phone service, and your GPS can not be predicted to be accurate in the eastern Sierra region. Bring real maps with you, and know what your options / destinations are before you leave your accommodations / camp ground / motel / home. Bring water (more than one tiny bottle per person), snacks, and the first aid box with you when venturing out beyond towns, and make sure everyone has a jacket along for cooler temperatures. If you are traveling on dirt / mountain roads, make sure you let someone know about your planned travel route, in case you get in trouble, you’ll want someone to know where to start looking if your trip becomes delayed or you have mechanical / automobile failures. Death Valley travel requires tip-top automobile condition, spare tires, shade coverings, lots of water, and very good preparation. Temperatures soar to the 100s in degrees and stay that way over night, and one hour in that kind of heat, without shade or water, can mean a deadly situation. Most people who die in Death Valley every year, die of exposure to the extreme elements and the lack of enough water, and this happens very quickly. Help is not readily available in most of the remote areas of the High Sierra, and being injured or getting lost can result in deaths before people get found by the Search and Rescue teams.
the old and new westerns and film stars; the Eastern California Museum in Independence, CA, (40 miles south from Bishop) known for its basket collection and the Mammoth prehistoric tusk; the Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center in Bishop, CA, (West Line Street in Bishop) reflecting the culture, history and life of the Paiute and Shoshone peoples; the Laws Railroad Museum, Laws, CA (six miles north of Bishop on US Highway 6), offers visitors a trip featuring trains, exhibits, and the newly opened Mule Museum; the Mammoth Museum at the Hayden Cabin, in Mammoth Lakes, CA, (42 miles north from Bishop) with its log cabin history and exhibits; the Mono Basin Historical Society and Museum, in Lee Vining, CA, (65 miles north from Bishop) located overlooking Mono Lake, this museum in the old schoolhouse displays beautiful baskets, and outside is the crazy Upside-Down House, and in Bridgeport, CA, (90 miles north from Bishop) you can find the Mono County Museum and historic jail building (near the historic Courthouse).
Checking Out the Sightseeing The eastern Sierra has lots of museums, in just about every town, and taking a day trip can be an enjoyable side adventure during Mule Days. Notable: the Museum of Western Film History in Lone Pine, CA, (50 miles south from Bishop) celebrating The Laws Railroad Museum, Laws, CA, six miles north on US Highway 6 from Bishop, CA. Places to Eat, Shop, and Enjoy Mule Days
ishop, CA—The City of Bishop is the largest and only incorporated town in the eastern Sierra (Inyo County), and it has historically been the hub of a wheel of spokes leading to adventure, ranching, mining, water systems, trade routes, farming, and commerce. Bishop is also the home of Mule Days, and for more than 50 years, the small community has put on a week-long celebration of everything rustic, western, and unique. A visit to the area isn’t complete without visiting other long-standing businesses, eateries, and a mom-and-pop market. Grocery shopping takes on a new meaning at Manor Market, on West Line Street, in Bishop, CA. With a giant chicken atop the market and gas station, it’s not hard to find this gem, and the Oney family is celebrating more than 50 years of serving the eastern Sierra residents and visitors. Some folks call it the closest thing to a “neighborhood grocery store,” with its gourmet foods, wine and beer selections, and fine spirits, plus gasoline, fishing licenses, bait and local favorites each week. Reagan’s Sporting Goods on Main Street in Bishop, CA, is the place to find the latest in fishing, guns, archery, hunting, camping, and outdoor sports / gear. This is the store to pick up information about fishing conditions, and its the shop for rigging / gearing up for your fishing adventures. Open for more than 10 years, this has become the go-to business for fishing of all sorts, and many of their top products available have been developed right in the lakes, streams and rivers nearby. Schat’s Bakkery, on Main Street in Bishop, CA, is world-famous for its breads, pastries, and other Dutch products. The European-styled bakkery features deli sandwiches, coffee, Gelato ice cream, pies, and the iconic Original Sheepherder
Bread®, introduced to the Owens Valley in 1938. The bakkery opens early at 6 AM, and this business is very busy all day long, with fresh breads baked everyday. Allen’s Outdoor, the Red Horse People, at the south end of Main Street in Bishop, CA, is a great place to pick up western cookware, camping, RV and marine supplies and gear. Featuring a wide selection of RV / marine parts, and accessories, Allen’s Outdoor also provides U-Haul vehicles / trailers, and they have feed store and pet supplies for large and small animals and stock. Eastside Sports is the iconic climbing, camping, outdoor and backpacking store on Main Street in Bishop, CA. Known for their climbing expertise, staff and gear, while shopping in this versatile store you can find unique souvenirs, outdoor clothing lines, climbing shoes, maps, books, kids gear, and jewelry. Mahogany Smoked Meats, North Sierra Highway (US Highway 395), just outside downtown Bishop, is another “must-visit” store in the eastern Sierra. This gourmet grocery store serves a large variety of smoked meats / jerky, sandwiches, dry soup mixes, and “Meadow Farms” (the original name) became a shop back in 1922, when “Wally” started smoking hams and bacon with old mountain mahogany logs. The Wanaaha Casino, north on US Highway 395, (formerly the Paiute Palace Casino) is open 24-hours for all of the fun you could possibly want, including Vegas-style gaming, the TuKa Novie restaurant, the Wanaaha Lounge, and the Paiute Deli.
