Rick and Alice Cassel retire from Bishop Creek Chevron By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Bishop, CA—Mule Days 2021 preparations are moving forward, and Rick and Alice Cassel, owners of the Bishop Automotive Center, are busily making schedules for security at the world-famous event, as well as other activities surrounding this most-busy time. The family has been a part of Mule Days for decades, and the long-time business owners talked in their office for a bit recently about their retirement from Bishop Creek Chevron. The Cassels and their son, Nate Gratz, who is the general manager, say, “With much gratitude for a long and successful journey with Chevron, local owners Rick and Alice Cassel, along with their partners at RSI, have sold Bishop Creek Chevron to new owners, Eivan Maida and family, and Bishop Creek Chevron Inc.” The sale took place recently and they are looking forward to more time for traveling says Alice. Rick Cassel began his career with Chevron in 1965, he explains, and was initially in marketing and then moved up into retail. Rick and Alice, together, provided excellent service and local support, and proudly contributed to many of the community events in the eastern Sierra for the past 40 years. Rick and Alice met in the eastern Sierra. Alice moved here in 1972 to “ski in Mammoth.” Rick says, he has been here since 1980. “I moved to the Owens Valley for the hunting and fishing.” He adds, “I always wanted to live in a small town.” The couple built the two-acre Bishop Creek Chevron and Bishop Automotive

Mark your calendars for the Fourth of July As the United States of America prepares to celebrate the 245th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department and its community partners are gearing up for a Fourth of July celebration unlike any ever seen before in Bishop. “We’re excited about the evolution of this event,” said Joe Dell, Bishop fire chief. “For more than 70 years, Bishop’s volunteer firefighters have hosted the community’s Fourth of July fireworks show, and we’re proud to continue that tradition in this new venue. Last year it was a secret, this year it’s not; come celebrate the Fourth with us at the Bishop City Park.” Historically held at the Bishop Airport, the fireworks show had to be moved this year due to the ongoing effort to bring commercial air service to Bishop. Last year, due to the pandemic, the location of the fireworks show had to remain “undisclosed.” After considering several different locations, the Bishop City Park was chosen as the perfect location for the 2021 celebration – and the entire community is invited to come celebrate. The party will kick-off with the city council’s Big Day in the Park, with free swimming at the park pool, pie and ice cream. Downtown residents are encouraged to walk or bike to the park early to enjoy live music, a kids’ decorated bike and scooter parade, and food vendors. The Fourth of July celebration this year is a tremendous collaboration in partnership with the City of Bishop, Inyo County, the Los Angeles Department of Water and power, REACH Air Medical Services, Coso Operating Company, the Bishop Paiute Tribe, Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau, and KIBS/KBOV Radio.
