Recreate Safely, Locally, and Stay Near Home 2020 Residents and businesses prepare for more re-openings and graduations restrictions are in place. No campfires, barbecues, or briquette fires on US Forest Service lands. Fire permits required to use gas stoves, lanterns, or cooking devices. Recreate near home. Trails, trailheads, and general forest areas are open.

Fishmas on the Horizon— Woo Hoo! zHurrah!! Fishmas finally arrives on Monday, June 1, at dawn. We've been waiting since the end of April to watch our fishing poles dip with a big trout, or bass, or perch. Buckley Ponds, near Bishop, CA, offers anglers a local chance at a variety of fish species, and a handicapped fishing platform makes it pretty nice angling too.

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—While Eastern Sierra businesses are reopening, and graduations are taking place, it is important to remember that we continue to safely and locally recreate. Traveling to many resorts, campgrounds, lakes (like Lake Tahoe) is not currently advised. These places / lodgings / short-term rentals are closed to nonproperty owning residents, except for essential workers. However, this does not mean that residents of the area can't get out for a little more activity, with masks on in public, social distancing, and proper hand-washing / hygiene in place at all times (when you aren't alone in public). Taking high-risk activities, like inexperienced climbing or recreating in closed areas, swimming in swiftly and cold water / moving rivers and streams, and lakes, or recreating in unknown areas without prior preparation, is discouraged. Everyone must be aware of the region's limitations to take care of emergencies, and don't overtax the search and rescue personnel, who put their lives in danger each and every time they rescue or recover us from our mistakes and accidents. The US Forest Service campgrounds remain closed until June 30. No restrooms, no water or trash, and fire

The general Eastern Sierra trout opener is Mon- 3 Bishop Union High School's graduation ceremony was a three-day event, with graduates picking up their diplomas with family, May 26-28. Congratulations to all of the graduates of 2020 for a job day, June 1, at dawn. Inyo well done. Photos by The Hired Pen and Mono Counties are working out the details (at press time). Alpine County has been open for fishing since May 15. Lake Tahoe is and the currents are swift, due to the recent warm open to Tahoe-only boaters, who use their vessel on Lake weather. All local / state coronavirus mandates remain in Tahoe only. June Lake Loop is open for fishing, except place while angling in public: masks on, social distancGrant Lake, which has a closed marina. The California ing, and washing hands / using sanitizer / proper hygiene. Department of Fish and Wildlife have been stocking the region, and in Mono County, they have invested in Desert Cruisin' Bishop and Graduations Springs Rainbows. The Nevada Department of Wildlife Formal graduation ceremonies are going to look difhas stocked the West Walker River. So, maybe more acferent this year. Bishop Union High School started its tive angling? Exercise extreme caution: Streams, creeks, graduation process on May 26, and will continue this and rivers are running high with very cold run-off waters, week until May 28. BUHS is celebrating by having families drive to the parking lot, and it's all being taped for the graduates. There are also banners on Warren Street in Bishop, displaying some of the many graduates of BUHS. Big Pine's graduation / promotion takes places June 4, at 6:30 p.m. Lone Pine's graduation is June 12, at 7 p.m. Mammoth Lakes' graduation is June 12, at 6 p.m. (MHS Gym).

Don't forget to pick up fishing worms for the Fishing Opener, June 1, at dawn. Reagan's Sporting Goods in downtown Bishop, CA knows how to hook up anglers with the latest in equipment, and fishing information. Happy angling!

Many residents in Bishop have taken to cruisin' on Friday evenings, around 7 p.m. Not a big deal. Some tunes, some honking, some waving, and some show of spirit for our community. But, while we're out there, why not order a dinner to pick-up on the way home? Try Whiskey Creek's new My Thai or Whiskey Tango menus, when you get done cruisin'. Order out, take home our favorites. Why not get a graduation celebration dinner? Go big for our 2020 graduates...they've really earned it!

COVID-19 will not delay wildlife baby season!

You can help us this Baby Season. Wildcare Eastern Sierra admitted nearly 500 wild birds, mammals, and reptiles last year with the help of volunteers. Nearly half of them were orphaned babies. Our winter and early spring weather has been erratic and wildlife parents are erratic in their choice of when to fix up nests and lay eggs, or den up and give birth to fuzzy little fourlegged babies. Some are just laying eggs; others have already fledged (left their nest). Can you help us this Baby Season? With the

need for safe distancing, we are most in need of inhome foster care parents. With safe training, individuals, couples, or a family can care for a nest of baby house finches, baby rabbits, skunks, or raccoons. Once the orphans learn to eat on their own, they can be released into a cage or flight pen. Other volunteer opportunities: work at the Center cleaning outdoor cages, help with pickups and transport to the Center or transfer an animal to rehab specialists elsewhere. If you are interested, please reply here. Volun-

teers make a difference! Wildcare is designated an essential service and will continue as long as possible, with strict safety protocols for rescuers, volunteers, and staff. You can make a huge difference for injured and orphaned babies with a monthly gift. Our Wildlife First Responders - monthly donors provide steady funding just when we need it most. Help your wildlife neighbors by becoming a Wildlife First Responder. Please join us. Just $5 a month can be such a big help!

Short-term rental update Inyo County Health Officer Dr. James Richardson, in consultation with the Inyo County Unified Command, has rescinded the prior Health Officer Order prohibiting shortterm rentals. Following the rescission of this order, campgrounds and RV parks may now rent to customers for less than 30 days. Privately operated short-term rentals (such as Airbnb’s), vacation rentals, timeshares, hotels, motels, or any other facility where the business is renting the customer a physical room or structure must continue to follow Governor Newsom’s Executive Order No. N-60-20 and the stages of reopening set out in California’s Resilience Roadmap by only renting to essential workers and local residents. “This update is in line with California’s Resilience Roadmap, which states that hotels may not begin operating for recreation or leisure travelers until Stage Three,” stated Dr. James Richardson. “However, campgrounds and RV parks are distinct from hotels because they do not rent a physical room or structure to a customer.” With both campgrounds and RV parks closed, Inyo County has seen a significant uptick in dispersed camping. The increase in dispersed camping, particularly by those who normally use campgrounds, poses serious public health and safety concerns. Dispersed campsites offer no garbage collection or facilities to manage human waste, which leads to pollution and the transmission of wasteborne pathogens. Dispersed campsites also lack safe areas to build campfires. As Inyo County moves into fire season, the risk of wildfires caused by dispersed campers has become a serious concern. Mono County has already experienced a brushfire caused by dispersed camping, and Inyo County Dispatch recently had a call for service for illegal warming fires at a dispersed camping site. As with all other businesses that are currently operating, campgrounds and RV parks that wish to reopen must comply with the COVID-19 guidance posted on the “Reopening Inyo Businesses” page of the County website and must submit an Inyo County Business Attestation. Campgrounds, RV parks, and other businesses seeking technical assistance or additional information about reopening can email questions to businessinfo@inyocounty.us.
