Long-time doctor celebrates retirement after 36 years of dedication in internal medicine Eastern Sierra, CA-- “It wasn't a job,” said Dr. Nickoline Hathaway, an internal medicine doctor of 36 years in Bishop, CA. “It was a pleasure to work in Bishop. It's a wonderful place. The people are great to work for,” she added, as she greeted family, friends, colleagues, and patients on Main Street Bishop, CA. The Bishop Twin Theater marquees celebrated the honor as well, and the event was a “total surprise,” Dr. Hathaway said. She began her practice 40 years ago, and arrived in Bishop in 1985. And, for the last 36 years she has served

Pino Pies serves up hand-sized meals and then some... By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Troy and Dulcie Pino have business savvy that spans the globe. But, the couple and their children are right at home in the Eastern Sierra with their long-time business, Pino Pies, located in Bishop, CA. The couple hand-bake, handsized pies, mostly meat, of all sorts. And, not just any kind of pies, locally sourced ingredients really make this a farm / ranch / desert / mountains story showcasing entrepreneurs from our local landscapes. Dulcie hails from the North Island, near Aukland, in New Zealand, and she and Troy met in Mammoth Lakes. Troy grew up in the Eastern Sierra, and worked at Footloose in Mammoth Lakes, for many years. He also worked on fishing boats in Alaska. Back in the day, the Pinos were chefs for yacht travelers in Florida, ran a bed and breakfast in Florida, and came west, where Troy went to the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco (no longer in existence). There were children to raise, school, and home life, and the Pinos began their pie quest locally in parking lots, out of the catering truck, and currently out of two venues in Bishop. Open for customers take out / outside dining, Pino Pies is across the street from the Jill Kinmont Boothe school, and the couple does all of the cooking at a second location (not open to the public) at the Tri-County Fairground's Tallman Pavilion kitchen. Dulcie notes, “It's a lot of fun,” and the “encouragement and support” of the customers has been very important. Troy says one of the harder aspects of the culinary education he received was “unlearning bad habits” from other cooking experiences. They also serve soups (homemade clam chowder and onion), cottage pies (served with mashed potatoes on top), super slaw with ginger miso dressing, and creamy mashed potatoes. Daily specials add variety to the menu, and many of the ingredients are grown or raised in the Eastern Sierra, like grass fed beef (Barb Wire Beef), lamb (Borda family), or the dates (China Ranch) for the sticky date pudding. The Pinos hope to continue the synchronized efforts of other local entrepreneurs, and incorporate more farm-to-table ingredients into the flaky butter, pastry crust pies.
