Summer Planning Gets Started 2020 June and July Activities Abound in the Eastern Sierra By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10 The tradition was started by Ann Reeves Jarvis, Julia Ward Howe, and Anna Jarvis, and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Today, mothers around the country enjoy spending time with their kids, although this year, the celebration may have to take place via a videochat or phone call. Those who have a mother nearby might think about getting her a few new garden / yard art ornaments or plants, or perhaps pick up a bottle of wine and some nice cheese and crackers, and have a picnic in your backyard, or place an order for her favorite books at the local bookstore, and have them delivered.

June: Let the Fun Begin By the end of May, the stay-at-home orders should look different for California. There are a number of summer activities which will get started, and some of the events are hold-overs from previous months, when we weren't able to leave our homes.

Mother's Day can start with some gardening supplies and new trees, flowers, herbs, and vegetables. Ace High Country Lumber's garden center is in full bloom, and Theresa Acree helps customers find just the right flowers for your yard.

The Eastern Sierra fishing opener is June 1, beginning at 5 a.m. This event was delayed from April 25, and there are plenty of anglers anxious to test their fishing skills. The Eastern Sierra Double Century Bike event takes place on June 6, and for those bicycle enthusiasts, you can get a double dose of riding in on that day.

Ace High Country Lumber's garden center (above & below) features lots of yard art, and colorful, metal whimsical farm animals abound in and around the garden displays.

The California High School Rodeo Association's Finals are being held in Bishop, CA, from June 7-14, and this event at the Tri-County Fairgrounds brings about 300 contestants from around the state to compete in a number of areas. The Independence Father's Day Weekend Fishing Derby is June 21, and this is a great way to spend time fishing with fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers. The Junior Livestock Show will be held at the Tri-County Fairgrounds on June 23-June 27, with the big livestock auction taking place on June 27.

July: Summer in Full Swing The Laws Railroad Museum will have train rides on July 3, from 10:30 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Mother's Day gifts can include her favorite books, and book accessories. Spellbinder Books is celebrating its 50th year in downtown Bishop, CA, and there are books to-go, or locally delivered.

COVID-19 Recovery Grants for Bishop Small Businesses The Bishop Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce a new grant program to benefit small businesses in Bishop that have been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to a generous private donor, an emergency fund has been established with $20,000 available to provide immediate financial assistance. All businesses with a physical location inside Bishop City limits are eligible to apply online at www.bishopchamberofcommerce.com. All applications will be reviewed and scored by a committee utilizing a two-stage process to ensure equality and fairness. It is important to note that unlike the SBA programs, this is not a first-come, first-served application process. Applications will open on May 6th and close on May 17th, 2020. All applications will be reviewed after the close date and funds will be awarded by the end of this month. “We know $20,000 won’t be able to help everyone; however, we are very grateful to the private donor that allowed us to establish this program,� states Tawni Thomson, Executive Director of the Bishop Chamber of Commerce. “If there are individuals or businesses that would like to contribute to grow the fund, donations in any amount would be welcome.� Questions regarding the application or additional contributions should be directed to the Bishop Chamber of Commerce via email – execdir@bishopvisitor.com.
