Veterans’ Day 2021

USA—Ceremonies are held nation-wide on Veterans’ Day, on the 11th month, on the 11th day, at the 11th hour. This year, Veterans’ Day happens on Thursday, November 11, and it is a federal holiday, and one that is fixed in time on that date. Veterans’ Day symbolizes what once was called, Armistice Day, on November 11, 1918, when World War I (called “The Great War”) ended. American soldiers, called “Doughboys,” fought in WWI, and the popular song of the day was “Over There.” The red poppies given out on Veterans’ Day represent the flowers “In Flanders Field,” a famous poem by Canadian author John McCrae; and the dead from the battle are the “speakers.” The beginning. “In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place....” Two other world literary works are considered classics in writing about World War I. “All Quiet on the Western Front,” (1929) by Erich Remarque, and “A Farewell to Arms,” (1929) by Ernest Hemingway. Eastern Sierra Ceremonies, Benefits, and Exhibits Veterans in this country can visit some places on Veterans’ Day, and receive free meals and benefits, and this is a way people can honor their military service to the country. Some of them are: Free entrance into our National Parks. Free admission (down south) to Knott’s Berry Farm, plus spouse or guest. And, many establish-

ments give discounts if you ask about how the business recognizes Veterans’ Day. Honoring those who serve / served in the military, locally, the Eastern Sierra has many permanent exhibits, and cultural museums, which tell stories about the veterans in the Great Basin region. November is Native American Heritage Month, and the Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center, Bishop, CA, has a Veterans’ Exhibit. Manzanar Historic Site also has a Japanese American series of stories about war veterans, and other exhibits. Bishop, CA, honors veterans at the Pioneer Cemetery, Bishop, CA. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post # 8988 officiating. Big Pine, CA, has ceremonies at Veterans’ Corner, at the intersection of US Highway 168 and US Highway 395. American Legion Post #118 officiating. Independence and Lone Pine, CA, attend honors at the towns’ cemeteries. Coleville, CA, honors veterans at the local cemetery. Pickel Meadows, Mountain Warfare Center, honor veterans on base. Inyo and Mono Counties have a new Veterans’ Service Officer, Gordon Greene, who started with the counties in March 2021.
