Veterans Day 2019 “Without them there would not be freedom”

Veterans Day ceremonies took place up and down the eastern Sierra, including at the Pioneer Cemetery in Bishop, CA.

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

Eastern Sierra, CA—Veterans Day ceremonies took place on Monday, November 11, at 11 AM, at cemeteries around the eastern Sierra, and veterans from all wars were honored by communities. The ceremony at Pioneer Cemetery in Bishop, CA featured speakers from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #8988 and the American Legion Post #118, and a special guest veteran, who is hiking the Pacific Crest Trail for Suicide Prevention. Earl McWilliams, VFW Post #8988 Commander, lead the ceremony by reminding us that veterans “have given us everyday,” and that it's up to all of us to “take an active part in being an American.” McWilliams also said, “Without them [veterans], there would not be freedom.” Patrick Powell, Commander of the American Legion Post #118, said that veterans “set aside civilian lives” to serve the country, and that veterans fought “with minds and hearts,” and the effort for continued peace are important.

Matthew Landis, a veteran and hiker on the Pacific Crest Trail for Suicide Prevention, gave the prayer at the Veterans Day ceremony at Pioneer Cemetery in Bishop, CA. Photos by The Hired Pen

Cheryl Underhill, President of the Women's Auxiliary, VFW Post #8988. (VFW) Post #8988 reminded those in attendance at the Veterans Day ceremony at Pioneer Cemetery in Bishop, CA, that “Freedom isn't free.”

Matthew Landis, a veteran hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail for Suicide Prevention, gave the prayer, and his special efforts for veterans will continue as he climbs Mt. Whitney in the next few weeks. Landis lost his leg to frostbite in his first attempts at the PCT. However, he is determined to reach higher goals, with American flag in hand.

Earl McWilliams, VFW Post #8988 Commander, and Patrick Powell, Commander of the American Legion Post #118, gave presentations at the Veterans Day ceremony at Pioneer Cemetery in Bishop, CA.

Jim Snyder,VFW Post #8988 member, and Matthew Landis, a veteran hiking the Pacific Crest Trail for Suicide Prevention for Veterans, shook hands at the Veterans Day ceremony at Pioneer Cemetery in Bishop, CA.

Southern Pacific #18, the Slim Princess steams out of the Larry Peckham Engine House during its Welcome Home Party at the Eastern California Museum on Dec. 2. Eastern California Museum photo.

About 200 people came out to celebrate the return of the Slim Princess Locomotive #18 to the Eastern California Museum in Independence. Visitors from throughout the region and all across Inyo County enjoyed the day-long Welcome Home Party for #18 on Nov. 2. The day started early when the all-volunteer crew from the non-profit Carson and Colorado Railway fired up historic, narrow gauge steam engine. Dozens of people watched the start-up process and enjoyed photographing the handsome locomotive as it traveled up and down the short stretch of track on the Museum grounds. A steady stream of train enthusiasts, including plenty of families, then got an “up close and personal” view of how the vintage, 1911 steam locomotive operates by taking a “cab ride.” The volunteer train engineers and brakemen explained the complex controls and answered questions during the rides Carson and Colorado President Dave Mull was also on hand to answer questions about the nearly 20 year effort to get the locomotive running after its career with the Southern Pacific Railway traveling from Laws to Keeler. In the 1950s the engine was retired and donated to Inyo County and placed in Dehy Park in Independence before being brought back to life by the CCRW group. The Slim Princess recently came back to its Independence home after a nearly year-long “visit” with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge RailThe Slim Princess #18 lets off plenty of steam during one of many road. Randy Babcock, the runs on a short stretch of track at the Eastern California Museum Chief Mechanical Officer of during the Nov. 2 Welcome Home Party for the locomotive. East- the Durango Silverton Narern California Museum photo. row Gauge Railroad, and Vice President of the CCCRW, presented a slide show and talk on the engine’s time in Durango. Babcock also signed copies of his recently completed book, “SP Narrow Gauge 18 Steams Anew.” The book relates SP #18 was taken apart and then put her back together with clear, concise writing and more than 100 photos and maps. The Friends of the Eastern California Museum sponsored a silent auction featuring dozens of books and other merchandise related to the history of the Eastern Sierra. The Friends also hosted the afternoon tri-tip dinner on the Museum grounds, with Dugan Whistler’s mouth-watering tri-tip beef and beans. Students from the Owens Valley School helped serve the meal, and the crowd was entertained by the Black and White String Band, featuring local musicians Nina Weisman on mandolin and Howie Schwartz on guitar, playing bluegrass and “old time music.” The Slim Princess is “home” in the Larry Peckham Engine House at the Eastern California Museum, at 155 N. Grant St., just three blocks west of the Historic Inyo County Courthouse in Independence. For more information call 760-878-0258. Self Recognition Ernest Holmes wrote, “You are part of the Universal Mind, one with the Universal Substance. You live, move and have your being in pure Spirit. All the wealth, the power and the goodness of this Spirit exist at the center of your being. You accept this good in such a degree as you accept, believe in and feel it.” This applies to each one of us. There may be some that are more aware, some that have yet to comprehend it and some at about the same pace as you, however; all of us on a spiritual journey towards a more fulfilling experience of life. Make no mistake about it; we are on a spiritual journey, not a religious one. Religion tends to present a “one size fits all” philosophy, while the individual is revered by Spirit. Life itself is a manifestation of Spirit. Each of us is infused with life. As a self-choosing individual, each one chooses how that life will function in the world. “In the beginning God,” the Bible begins. The Life of God (Spirit) is perfect and eternal, and is the gift to you. All the Goodness, Truth and Beauty are like a great buffet, available to each of us, as we become aware of our choices. Choices of sin, sickness and death may have been founded long before we were in the world, but it is still up to each one to either perpetuate the belief, or to strike out on a new direction. Holmes offers the following prayer (treatment) to assist in choice making, Consciously, I draw upon the Life that is mine. I know that the fullness of Life, which is Divine in Its origin, eternal in its presence, and forever available, is mine. The Life of the eternal Spirit is my life. The infinite riches of Its being are mine to enjoy. The vitality, the wisdom and the peace of God are mine. I accept them in fullness, in joy and in peace. The ancient Chinese sage said of the Tao (Spirit) produces everything, nourishes everything, and maintains everything. It flows through and is in all things. There is nothing outside of it. Your recognition of Life is God There is but one Presence in the universe. Since it is in and through everything, It must be in and through you. This presence manifest in all forms, all people and all conditions. Its nature is love and givingness. Knowing this nature can give strength to our choices. Are your life choices motivated and formulated with love and givingness in Mind? Life cannot operate against itself. Choices made is anger, outrage and shame cannot lead the peace and tranquility. Always the negative is overcome by the affirmative. It is totally up to us, which way we will go. Joshua said, “And if you be unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom will you serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Chose well my friends, your life depends on it. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
