Main St. BISHOP 760-873-7777 CITY OF BISHOP PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION AND PLANNING COMMISSION VACANCIES Veterans Day ceremonies were held in the Eastern Sierra, and in Bishop, CA, many gathered at the Pioneer Cemetery to honor veterans, both active and retired military members. Official full military burial services are available to families in the Eastern Sierra, and the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post # 8988 provide this service to those who request it, and where the family would like the ceremony to take place. By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Bishop, CA-- Veterans Day ceremonies were observed in the Eastern Sierra, and locally, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion held official services at the Pioneer Cemetery in Bishop, CA. The VFW and American Legion members placed flags in downtown communities up and down US Highway 395, as part of the annual observances, and community members visited with current military service members throughout the day on Sunday, November 11. The Commander of Bishop's VFW Post #8988, John Underhill, officiated at the Bishop ceremony, and later spoke with The Sierra Reader about some of the unique services provided by the VFW, American Legion, and other veterans' programs in the Eastern Sierra. Underhill has held the commander position in the past, since his membership to the local VFW back in 1972, and was recently re-elected to the commander's post for 2018 (serving a term

Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post # 8988, Commander, John Underhill, officiated at the Veterans Day ceremonies at both the Pioneer Cemetery, in Bishop, CA, and the VFW Post #8988 members welcomed the community for a lunch, and visiting. Following the lunch, some of the VFW members went and visited veterans who could not attend the ceremonies in person. Bishop's VFW has been in existence since February 8, 1947, when community members helped construct the building to serve the local veterans. Photos by The Hired Pen of one year). Two seats on the Parks and Recreation Commission are scheduled to expire; one seat expires on December 11, 2018 and the other seat expires on January 11, 2019. There is also a seat on the Planning Commission that will expire on January 27, 2019. The City of Bishop is seeking persons interested in serving on these commissions. All interested persons may contact Bishop City Hall at (760) 873-5863. Applications and descriptions of duties and responsibilities of the commissions are available at City Hall, located at 377 West Line Street in Bishop, or on the City's website at www.cityofbishop .com. Tragic death linked to possible Naegleria Fowleri exposure in Inyo County A child from Southern California tragically died over the weekend after being diagnosed with an extremely rare infection known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Testing was positive for evidence of Naegleria fowleri, a one-celled organism commonly known as the brain-eating ameba. Humans become infected when water containing Naegleria fowleri enters the nose, usually while swimming or diving. People do not get infected by drinking contaminated water. In the nose, the ameba migrates to the brain along the olfactory nerve, through a bony plate in the skull called the cribiform plate, where it reaches the brain and begins to destroy brain tissue. The ameba has never been shown to have spread from one person to another. The child’s only known water exposure during the incubation period was believed to be at one of the natural water ponds at Hot Ditch, a popular hot springs soaking area south of Bishop. Inyo County Health and Human Services and Environmental Health Departments have collaborated with the California Department of Public Health and the CDC on this investigation. This is the second PAM case linked to untreated recreational water sources in Inyo County in recent years. In 2015, a 21-year-old succumbed to PAM after swimming in a private, untreated swimming pool in southern Inyo County. Symptoms of PAM start quickly, usually within days of exposure, and include: headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, and stiff neck. Later symptoms include: confusion, lack of attention, loss of balance, seizures, and hallucinations. After the start of symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and usually causes death within 3-7 days. This microscopic ameba is from a single cell class of organisms known as protozoa. They are common, naturally occurring organisms that normally feed on bacteria and tend to live in warm bodies of fresh water. They thrive when temperatures are high and water levels are low. PAM infections have been reported worldwide. In the US, there have been 34 cases reported in the United States during the period 2008-2017. Almost 90% of those cases were associated with swimming in warm freshwater lakes and rivers. Other uncommon sources identified in very rare instances include: • Geothermal water, such as hot springs/tubs • swimming pools that are poorly maintained and/or inadequately chlorinated • contaminated tap water • water heaters with temperatures less than 116 degrees F • ritual nasal cleansing or irrigation using a neti pot • religious practices While the ameba is widespread, infections are rare. Hundreds of millions of visits to swimming venues occur each year in the US that result in 0-8 infections per year. It is unknown why certain persons become infected with the ameba while millions of others exposed to warm recreational fresh waters, including those who were swimming with people who became infected, do not. The relative risk is extremely low, and yet the stakes are high because the chance of dying when infected is almost 100%. How can you stay safe? As the CDC says, “The only certain way to prevent a Naegleria fowleri infection is to refrain from water-related activities in or with warm, untreated or poorly treated fresh water.” Here are some tips: • Keep your head above water in untreated hot springs or other thermally heated bodies of water and during activities where water is forced up the nose, like water sports and diving. • Hold your nose shut or wear nose clips when swimming in warm, untreated freshwater. • Avoid digging in or stirring up sediment in shallow, warm freshwater areas, where the ameba may live. • Avoid water-related activities in warm freshwater during periods of high temperature and low water levels. • Avoid swimming in polluted water or unchlorinated swimming pools. • If using a neti pot for nasal cleansing or irrigation, use only filtered or boiled water. Love and Law Love, as defined in the book, How to be Healthy, Wealthy and Happy, by Raymond Charles Barker says, “Love is the capacity to give emotion to others and yet neither dominate them nor be dominated by them.” That kind of definition may not sell many Hallmark cards, but it is pretty comprehensive. What it says tells us that love is an emotion that must be given, or expressed, with intelligence. We may not think of Intelligence when we think of love. As a matter of fact, Hollywood depictions of love often present us with stupefied love. For love to grow, in a relationship, or in groups; like a tree or flower, it must be supplied with the nutrients required to maintain, sustain and empower it. Emotion without the element of law can be chaotic. Barker states, “Emotion without intelligence cannot function wisely. Love is an emotion. Love and hate are two ends of the same stick, and they cannot function without a balancing of intelligence.” It takes wisdom to maintain love. It takes intelligence to maintain love. It takes insight to maintain love. Contrary to the phrase commonly used, you don’t fall in love, as if it were akin to a pit or a well. Love warms the heart. Whether love is for people, places or things, there is a corresponding feeling of well-being. If you take the other end of the stick; there is a corresponding feeling of negativity. As emotional beings, we have the capacity to love one or more things, and at the same time, hate one or more things. In my lifetime I don’t believe I have ever seen so much hatred expressed, on a daily basis, especially with a political slant. Knowing how destructive hate can be: both to individuals and groups, I am concerned for our collective health. My science teacher utilized a plant to demonstrate the effects of directing love or hate had on the plant. The plant flourished with love and withered with hate. I can’t explain why some of the trees at the Bishop Country Club flourish despite being cursed at repeatedly by golfers whose ball is located behind them. We are emotionally linked with people. On a sliding scale, we can love some and hate some, and like some and dislike others, however; the effect on our countenance, our body and our presentation to our world is not necessarily in direct ratio to an equal distribution. Unfortunately, while love is a strong emotion, it pales in the destructive power of hatred. Despite the illusion of being overcome with emotion, in truth, we have made a choice long before the effects can be felt. Remember; we are dealing with mind. Each of us either choses which thoughts they will process, or else, as Shakespeare said, Suffer the slings and arrows of outrages fortune. We are always thinking, even in our sleep, so it behooves us to choose what we desire to think about. It takes practice to control your thought, and a good deal of patience, but, as you will find out, it is all worth it. This is not a love everybody type of article. That would be ridiculous! This is more a love yourself article, because as you fill your mind with love, like or even tolerate, you generate positive energy to a happy, healthy and wealthy life. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
