Reflections on Veterans’ Day 2022 Honoring All Who Served

“On this day, Veterans Day, we are commemorating the Service of Veterans of all wars.

Bishop, CA—Veterans’ Day remembrances were observed throughout the country on November 11, and in the Eastern Sierra, many of the small towns held ceremonies with veterans’ service groups providing the inspiration for the day.

The American Legion Post Inyo #118, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8988 honored all who served in wars, with members presenting tributes, prayers, and Michael Allen (now from Australia, but visiting his family in Bishop), playing the bagpipes. The Pioneer Cemetery, in Bishop, CA, was the setting for Pete Peters, American Legion Post #118 Commander, opening with the Pledge of Allegiance, and his tribute to veterans. Veterans’ Day ceremonies took place across America on November 11, and locally, in Bishop, CA, a remembrance service took place at the Pioneer Cemetery in Bishop.

A Veterans’ Day Remembrance service was presented by the American Legion Post Inyo #118, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8988 (VFW Post #8988).

Pete Peters, American Legion Post #118, asked the audience to say the Pledge of Allegiance, and the he presented a tribute to veterans, at the Veterans’ Day remembrance in Bishop, CA.

Bishop Union Football

Broncos fell 9-7 to Pioneer Valley Thursday night in the 2nd round of the CIF Central Section Division 5 Championships. The loss ends the 2022 season for the Broncos who finish with a 9-1 record. The Pioneers opened a 6-0 halftime lead and stretched that lead to 9-0 after a 3rd quarter field goal. The Broncos answered with a Albert Cano touchdown run to pull closer, but turned the ball over in the final minute ending the comeback attempt. The Bronco Defense was tough throughout the night with senior linebackers leading the way. Cain Omohundro made a team high 10 solo tackles including a tackle for loss. Albert Cano made 8 solo tackles and a tackle for loss. Safety Carson Schmidt made 5 solo tackles and broke up a pass. Cheveyo Marquez made 5 solo tackles. Milton Michel, Isaac Reno and Reese Dondero each had 4 solo tackles. Austin Powell 3 solo tackles including 2 tackles for loss. Kaelan Smith had 3 solo tackles including a tackle for loss and knocked down one pass. Offensively the Broncos were led on the ground by Senior Cain Omohundro who carried the ball 11 times for 39 yards. Cano had 4 carries for 7 yards and the touchdown. Boden St. Marie completed 6 of 16 passes for 94 yards. Michel made 2 catches for 44 yards and Omohundro also pulled down 2 receptions for 44 yards. American Legion Post #118 Chaplain, Scruffy Huffman said a prayer, American Legion Auxiliary President, Joyce Curwick paid tribute, and Jim Synder, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8988 Commander, spoke of veterans and their importance in our lives. The bagpipes played a beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace,” to conclude the ceremony, and family, friends, neighbors, and visitors spent the remaining time thanking the veterans in attendance.

The VFW Post #8988, Bishop, CA, is celebrating its 75th anniversary, and renamed its post after the late, Colonel Robert “Bob” Waggoner, who was a decorated veteran, a former Prisoner of War (POW), and an advocate for veterans and the communities in the Eastern Sierra. Post Commander John Underhill spoke to the Inyo County Board of Supervisors recently to dedicate the post, and to recognize November 11 as Veterans Day.

Jim Snyder, a former Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8988 Commander, paid tribute to our nation’s veterans, Veterans Day, Bishop, CA.
