Erick Schat remembered Memories of legendary baker shared at memorial

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

Bishop, CA—The celebrated Eastern Sierra baker and business icon, Erick Schat, was honored last week at his funeral services, November 10, 2021, at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, in Bishop, CA. The service was followed with a procession to the East Line Street cemetery and a gravesite burial. Schat passed away on October 4, 2021, in the Eastern Sierra, CA. Born in 1942, to immigrant parents from the Netherlands, Schat was known for being an astute business man, but a baker at heart. His breads and eventually his Erick Schat’s Bakkery in Bishop, became icons of the region, and a tourist destination for many. Schat also contributed to the western spirit of the area, and was a frequent part of trail drives, high school rodeo finals, annual fairs, and Mule Day’s barbecues, with friends and family. Those who knew Erick turned out in large numbers at the funeral to tell some stories about him and Erick’s love of the area. One fellow, Hector, shared a conversation he had with Erick one day, among Erick’s vineyards in the shadow of the White Mountains. Erick commented, while looking about, “Do you think this is what heaven looks like?”

Giving Begins at Home 2021 Salvation Army’s season of giving comes to home town venues

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

Bishop, CA—It’s a sunny fall afternoon at the local Grocery Outlet in Bishop, CA, and the Salvation Army’s Stuff-a-Bus, Coats for Kids, and food donation drive is well underway. Shoppers drop off food, and others bring in toys, dry foods, and jackets to suit anyone, and an Eastern Sierra Transit bus is stuffed to the brim. These donations help the Salvation Army bring much-needed foods and clothing to others during the holiday seasons, and year-round through the food banks that are stocked for those in need in Inyo and Mono Counties.

People from far and wide came together to remember White was a theme at Erick Schat’s funeral services Erick Schat, at his funeral, November 10, 2021, at the at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, Bishop, CA. The annual Stuff-a-Bus drive is just one example of some of the events planned by the Salvation Army this giving season, and the mobile unit will be at several venues in the near future. Featured at these mobile donation spots will be spaghetti dinners, beginning on Friday, November 19, at the Bishop City Park at noon, and later in the day, onward to other sites, including Manor Market. Donations can also be made to the Salvation Army at the Bishop office location, and the upcoming holiday bell-ringers at local businesses in the region.

SACRAMENTO, CA – The Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC) presented $56,250 to five Mono County nonprofits at the Mono County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday. Rural community and business leaders from across the state raised the funds during the Basket Drawing and Auction at RCRC’s 2021 Annual Meeting in late September for the benefit of nonprofits serving the Mono County community.

.LWFKHQV %DWKURRPV 5HPRGHOV $GGLWLRQV *DUDJHV “These meaningful contributions will further support the important work of our Mono County nonprofits serving local students, veterans, fire survivors, and hospice patients,” said RCRC Board Chair and Mono County 6LGLQJ DQG PRUH Supervisor Stacy Corless. “I am so grateful for the generosity of our RCRC family, especially our corporate partners, that attended RCRC’s Annual Meeting and their dedication to supporting California’s rural communities.”

RCRC’s Annual Meeting concludes with a Basket Drawing and Auction in which a county-themed basket is auctioned off from each of RCRC’s 37 member counties. This year $56,250 was raised, which includes a $10,000 contribution from RCRC. The proceeds from the Basket Auction portion of the event are donated to select charities in the county of the RCRC Board Chair. This year’s selected charities include the Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra/National Wounded Warrior Center, Eastern Sierra Conservation Corps, Mono Arts Council, Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserves, and Antelope Valley Lions Club.

BURROWING OWL RESCUED IN DEATH VALLEY Last week, as dusk was falling, Wildcare Director Cindy Kamler received an emergency call from James Lander who works in Death Valley. A small owl had run smack into the glass door of the Stovepipe Wells hotel. Acting quickly, James gently picked up the stunned bird and held it against his body for warmth and security. Nearby employees helped locate a cardboard box to safely contain the owl and James and his daughter found a dark quiet place for the container while he made his call to Wildcare. After ensuring that the rescuers were taken proper care of the injured animal, Kamler began to explore means for transporting it to Wildcare. James kindly offered to drive the patient to Lone Pine. From there, a “pony express” would hopefully be put into action. Jon of Elevation: Sierra Adventure Essentials, in Lone Pine, often assists Wildcare in finding rides to Keoughs Hot Springs. Jon sprang into action and within an hour or so, a plan was set. James would bring the owl to Jon. Because of the late hour, the owl would stay warm and safe overnight at the store. Wildlife biologist Russel Kokx would drive it to Keoughs early in the morning. The patient was found to be an adult Burrowing Owl, one of the smallest North American owls. They live mostly on plains and meadows, nesting in ground squirrel burrows and hunting primarily large insects and small rodents. As the human population spreads into these open spaces, Burrowing Owl numbers decrease or even disappear, making them a species of special concern. Our young Death Valley owl showed slight signs of impact trauma, was hydrated and given special medication. These burrowers become more active as evening approaches and our little owl did the same, soon eating his small rodent dinner and exploring his hospital cage. By the next morning he was so alert and active that we moved him to a large outdoor cage to eat, explore and take short flights. Time to go home! Ron and Nancy Overholtz joining the “pony express,” picked up the bird around 1:00 pm and headed south to hand him back to Russel who, in turn, gathered up the reins and took off toward Stovepipe Wells to meet James, his son, Josh, and daughter, Sara. They took the owl’s travel box to the nearby desert brush area and placed it on the ground. The owl waited quietly until the sky became dark. Smoothly and silently the bird lifted off and flew about 15 feet. The Burrowing Owl touched down without sound and disappeared into the dusky darkness. ###
