Remaking Ourselves 2020
Old Bishop Main Street storefront becomes adult education center
*This is the first in a three-part series on “Remaking Ourselves in 2020,” and how an old storefront became the latest adult education program, the “Job Spot,” on Bishop's Main Street. By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Bishop, CA—Ever think about really old storefronts in frontier-type towns? Ever wonder what other lives or purposes these history-rich structures have served over a hundred or more years? Ever imagine that the local Main Street businesses might have been many other enterprises over a hundred years? Well, if you enjoy seeing these buildings take on a new life, rather than being razed / or carted off in favor of a pop-up concrete wall box, then this three-part story is right up your alley....
Dusey's Haberdashery: 151 North Main Street, Bishop, California There once was a haberdasher named Guy M. Dusenberg, who operated “Dusey's Haberdashery” on Main Street in downtown Bishop, CA. Selling men's clothing and accessories was a big business in the frontier town in eastern California in the early 1900s. In Europe, they sold sewing and dressmaking materials, such as buttons, ribbons, and zips, and in America they also sold men's clothing, like suits, shirts, neckties, and shoes. The early years in Bishop were filled with entrepreneurs, businesses, and expansion of the small town. Bishop Creek, as it was first called, was founded by Samuel A. Bishop in 1861, and his San Frances Ranch (California Historical Landmark No. 208, on West Line Street, near the turnoff to Red Hill) was home to hundreds of head of cattle. And, Bishop's name stuck with the center of commerce in the Owens Valley. The indigenous people of the Owens Valley, the Paiutes, here for perhaps 10,000 years before the rancher, were not happy with the cattleman's arrival and were hostile to the settlers. But eventually Bishop and the other ranchers met with the Native Americans, and advanced a peace treaty in 1862. All but one chief settled, and further confrontations continued during the Owens Valley Indian Wars (1861-1865).
Dusey's Haberdashery, once a Bishop Main Street men's store in the early 1900s, will become the “Bishop Job Spot” this next year. Nearly 110 years later, Dusey's Haberdashery building will welcome adults to an educational center, in a partnership formed between Cerro Coso Community College, the Inyo County Office of Education, and the Gadeas (owners of the building). Electricity came to the Bishopites in 1902, a first in this neck of the woods (including Nevada), with power cascading down Bishop Creek, via the Bishop Light and Power Company. This power development eventually reached from Nevada to the California-Mexican border, the longest electricity system in the world at the time. Water and power concerns remained top issues in the early 1900s, as they do today.
town amenities, like the first telephone system grew, along with Bishop's volunteer fire department. The first Owens Valley bank, the Inyo County Bank, provided residents with capital to continue their businesses. And, so goes Bishop, so went Inyo County, with prosperity.
The citizens of Bishop decided they wanted to incorporate the town in early 1903, with intentions on securing an improved water system, and fire protection. There were about 500 people living within the boundaries at the time, and it was voted by the residents to incorporate on April 24, 1903, becoming the first and only incorporated city in Inyo County. Infrastructures, like sewer systems, and
The issue of being a “wet or dry” city (the serving and selling of liquor) was the topic of conversation and debate in 1909, and by 1910, after a municipal election, it was determined Bishop would be a “dry” town. Closing saloons was a big deal in the Owens Valley, and the loss of revenue was a noticeable disadvantage to the fledgling city and Inyo County's coffers.

Sanna Sleep Awarded First Place at WeedCon West LOS ANGELES – Sanna Brands™, announced that Sanna Sleep™, its innovative cannabinoid and terpene-based sleep product, was awarded 1st Place at WeedCon West. The product was judged by over a dozen industry professionals, consumers, and product buyers. Over 130 products were evaluated at the event. Sanna Sleep was developed by a molecular biologist and is doctor endorsed to help people ease into a deep and restful sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed and energized. The unique formulation in Sanna Sleep includes a customized ratio of isolated cannabinoids and a proprietary blend of select terpenes that promote deep sleep without any of the unwanted side-effects that are typical with other sleeping products. “We are proud to have been awarded Best Product in this prestigious competition,” said Jonathan Miller, CEO of Sanna Brands. “Our goal is to be recognized around the world as the premier cannabinoid-based sleep product.” To that end, Miller announced the company’s plans to introduce the product in Canada and the United Kingdom later this year. Additionally, the company is finalizing manufacturing agreements to bring Sanna Sleep to Oregon, Florida, and several other states. Sanna Sleep works because of the unique way it interacts with the endocannabinoid system. The all-natural, plant-based formula in Sanna Sleep precisely targets CB1 and CB2 receptors, quickly triggering pleasant feelings of relaxation and sleepiness, while wearing off completely by the morning. The formula in Sanna Sleep contains a slight amount of THC, one of the active ingredients in cannabis. Accordingly, the product is currently only for sale in licensed dispensaries. Importantly, Sanna Sleep was developed with pure, isolated cannabinoids, so that the formula is consistent in every gelcap. Moreover, Sanna Sleep is perfectly balanced with a precise low-dose blend of ingredients so that a user will never feel any psychoactive effects or “get high.” For people who have difficulty falling or staying asleep, or anyone who just wants a good night’s sleep, Sanna Sleep is perfect – it’s strong enough to be effective, but gentle enough to be used as often as desired. For more information on Sanna Sleep, or to find the nearest retailer, visit: SannaSleep.com.

Manor Market honors vets with free lunch
Manor Market's Veterans Appreciation Lunch included free pulled pork sandwiches, salads, cookies, and water, with Manor Market's staff and owner, Kyle Oney, helping out with saying thanks to local veterans for their service to our country. From left: Steve Wagoner, Kyle Oney, Ronnie Jorgensen, Manor Market staff and owner, and Craig Barrett, with Cisco Foods.
Bishop, CA-- Manor Market, in Bishop, CA, honored military services members and families with a free lunch on Veterans Day. “The Veterans Appreciation lunch, said Kyle Oney, was a way of saying thanks to military service members. Oney and his family have owned Manor Market for more than 50 years, and the local neighborhood market's parking lot was the scene of a table filled with lunch fixings. A number of veterans took advantage of the pulled pork sandwiches (Cisco Foods donated the pork and sandwich rolls), potato salad or cole slaw, delicious cookies and water (Manor Market donated the rest of the fixings). One passerby was heard to say, “Good on you guys, as he went into the market, highlighting the generosity of Manor Market's Veterans Day celebration.
