Ace High Country Lumber, Bishop, CA, teamed up with Traeger Wood Fired Grills to produce the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thanks Grilling Party,â&#x20AC;? on Saturday, November 16, with free samples of barbecued turkeys, pumpkin pies, and cranberry chutney. Fine fall weather made the grilling event a tasty success.

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Bishop, CAâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Wood, seasonings, and a well-temperatured wood fired grill, paired with a couple of five to eight pound turkeys (breast and legs' combination), and a couple of pumpkin pies...what do you have? A start to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thanks Grilling Party,â&#x20AC;? and

then some. Bishop's Ace High Country Lumber teamed up with Traeger Wood Fired Grills to create a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thanks Grilling Party,â&#x20AC;? Saturday, November 16, and the party was a delicious version of what an outdoor holiday event can achieve, with the right grill / barbecue arrangement, and

experienced advice. High Country Lumber's retail manager, Scott Lasley, is a master of the Traeger grills, and the store has done a number of grilling experiences in town, featuring meats cooked on Traeger grills, including the TriCounty Fair competitions and recently serving up sliders for

Customer Appreciation Day. Lasley has proven the grills, and assemble products, like seasonings (rubs), and hard woods / pellets, stand up for the many seasons of use. Ace High Country Lumber brought in 50 pounds of turkey (five to eight pound birds), and eight pies for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thanks Grilling Party,â&#x20AC;? and Lasley notes the turkeys cooked in two and a half hours, and the pies in an hour and a half, together, with a meat thermometer to cook the turkeys to perfection. The meat was moist and juicy, with hints of maple lingering in the pumpkin pies. Lasley adds a cranberry, orange zest, with almonds, chutney (a sweet and sour relish) to the plate for a perfect fall combination. Speaking of woods, Lasley notes the turkey wood / pellets are a blend of oak, hickory, maple, and natural rosemary. The Bishop Chamber of Commerce is busy planning several fun & festive Christmas events and everyone is invited to join in the fun! We realize it may seem a bit early, but it takes many weeks of planning to assure the events are successful. This year’s Main Street Christmas Parade is Saturday, Dec. 7th. Start time will be 4:30 pm. Lighted floats, marching bands, vintage vehicles, wagons and more will celebrate the Western theme “Holiday Hoedown.” Immediately following the parade, everyone is encouraged to gather in the Bishop City Park for the official Tree Lighting Ceremony, then stroll downtown for the Street of Lights merchant party. There will be warming fire rings, carolers and many shops will be open late, offering great deals and refreshments. New for this year, we’ve added the “Shop Local Holiday Raffle.” Participating merchants will have raffle boxes and entry forms; shoppers can enter once at each location Monday, December 2nd through Saturday, December 7th. The winners will be announced on Monday, December 9th. Prizes will include gift certificates from participating merchants and grand prize is a $500 local shopping spree at the chamber-member businesses of your choice. This raffle replaces the map stamping raffle that was done in previous years. “We heard from many shoppers and merchants that the map stamping made people feel too rushed. The raffle box method will allow shoppers a full week to visit the shops and won’t limit participation to just those stores that are on Main Street downtown. Parade entries and Street of Lights merchant registration forms are now available and due by November 22nd. The 5th Annual Railroad Express event is scheduled for Saturday, December 14th at Laws Museum. Families will enjoy train rides, live entertainment, refreshments, crafts and activities, wagon rides, plus visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Choose You This Day One of the great mysteries surrounding the religious world is which path is the right path, leading to a happy and successful life. Even in a relatively small town like Bishop there are multiple churches and faiths to choose from. I ponder; is my church better than any of the others? Is there a particular teaching or dogma that would be of better service to my needs, or to the requirements for a better life experience? Did God establish one church as the True Church, or are they all one the same path? Does one need a church at all? Since a church consists of its members; what if I differ in my belief from the main body of the church? If I identify with the church, do I lose my identity as an individual? What is God’s purpose for my life? All these questions, and many others have been asked of me, many times. First of all, I would like to say without reserve, I support all churches, all religions and all faiths. I am a Religious Scientist because it works for me. I love church, and I’ve tried other faiths and teachings, however; they didn’t empower me the way Religious Science does. If I could adhere to a particular dogma and feel happy with my choice, I might have settled in to it, but I must consider my spiritual identity before I conform to a teaching that doesn’t consider my individual reason and place in the Universe. I respect other teachings, but they are not for me. I would like to explain why I live, move and have my being with the philosophy of Religious Science as a guidepost and beacon. Ernest Holmes wrote The Science of Mind in 1926. While he was credited with starting Religious Science, there were many so-called New Thought teachers that he could draw on for inspiration and direction. Men like Emerson, Troward, Rawlings and Evans each had insight to lead the way in personal empowerment. Theirs was not to disregard the established church but to enhance it. Likewise with Holmes; his intention was to bring treatment to the churches as an added thing, even though it was rejected by the mainstream churches. The Bible states that each one of us was created in the image and after the likeness of God, which means that we have the nature of God, which in turn means we are creative. How and what we create is really up to each individual. Jesus said, “It is done unto you as you believe.” Now if we just left it to up to God to think for us, I guess everything would be good and very good, but unfortunately, or not, we are thinking, creative people, and what we are thinking about, we are bringing about. So it appears that if we want good in our life, it would behoove us to start thinking of good, and eliminate anything contrary from good out of our thought. takes a good deal of work and discipline to focus on the constructive and affirmative way of life. It seems so easy to fall into the lack, loss and limitation camp, but you soon know it will lead you into all forms of undesirable consequences. Then you may become awake, alert and attentive to the way of goodness, truth and beauty. To live in harmony with the Universe is a moment by moment decision. The power is given unto each as he chooses. For God so loved the world, He gave! We have been given life, abundant. Make it count! Live your faith and be filled with the Spirit. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
