By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—A large gathering of family, friends, and community members from up and down the Eastern Sierra met to honor the life of Ernest “Augie” Hess, on Saturday, November 17, at the Bishop Golf Course and Country Club. Augie's daughters, Vineca and Heidi, greeted the many people who turned out to say something about Augie, who passed away on October 20, at the age of 104 years old. The ceremony included a full military salute to the Hess, who was attached during World War II with the Army Air Corps 345th Fighter Squadron (being stationed in England, the Mediterranean, North Africa, Sardinia, Corsica, and Italy). DJ Rausch (a Hess relative) officiated, with musical presentations by Patrick Powell (saxophone), Robin Morning and Dan Conner (singing), Sharon Phelps and Terry Fenske presented honors (Order of the Eastern Star and Masons), Alan Blaver and family (on the flute, and singing), and the Veterans of Foreign War

Post #8988 and the American Legion Post #118, all contributed to the celebration. Hess was an avid golfer, and spent much of his time in the company of those who shared his passion. Hess was born in the Mono Basin, near Lee Vining, in 1914, and his parents, Gus Hess (from Switzerland) and Lula (neé Charlie, a Paiute Native American from Mono Basin) worked at Mono Mills (for the Bodie Railroad and Lumber Company), and were employed by the lumber mills. The Hess family owned several service stations in Lee Vining, and Augie spent time going to school in Lee Vining, Bishop, Seattle, and Pasadena (college). Hess was talented at baseball, golf, and skiing, and also did some work as a miner (The Hess Mine), cowboy, mechanic, and musician. The Veterans of Foreign War Post #8988 and the American Legion Post #118 performed a full military service for August “Augie” Hess, at the Bishop Golf Course and Country Club. Stan Smith, a part of the military ceremony, played Taps on his trumpet at the request of the family, and a brief medley of Augie's favorite songs. Photos by The Hired Pen

The Use of Mind

War and Peace When we study the history of man, we find that the progress of the populations has most often come through conflict. Wars, battles and rumors of wars dominate our most sacred documents. Statues of war heroes serve as reminders of our admiration, however; one man of peace has made an impact that changed that long held precedent. It would have been easy for Jesus to follow the dictates of the Romans, and even the Jews, but he followed the dictates of his heart. Unlike his contemporaries he could see beyond conflicts to where man could live in peace. During his life, and after his death, his followers were persecuted: not for their devotion to Jesus, but because they dared to think outside the box. It is ironic that today we find individuals that have thought outside the box, and celebrate their achievements. We call them innovators. Edison, Einstein, Tesla, Gates and many others have dared to rise above the need for conflict and benefitted mankind. Among the richest men in the world fit that category. It is interesting that many of our so-called modern conveniences have had their origin in supplying the war effort. We are dealing with mind, and each of us is following the patterns of thought we have been observed, instructed or otherwise emulated to perform adequately. Rather than buck a habitual way of thinking or appear odd or difficult: these individuals go with the flow. Sometimes it may have been better to keep a lid on your revelations, as some of our early heroes of innovation were burned at the stake, by the established church. The Spanish Inquisition severely punished those not holding to their way of thinking. One of the reasons that era was called the dark ages was because innovation was thwarted. When we look at how rapidly we have advanced in the past three hundred years, it comes with a caveat; if we hadn’t been held back for over five hundred years, where we would be exceeds the limits of our imagination. People have asked me why religion is not the mainstay in their lives, as it once was. Most of the so-called established churches do not have anything new to offer. There is nothing wrong with their message, but it must fit the needs of the people it is trying to reach. The Judeo-Christian Bible was put together over fifteen hundred years ago, and it wasn’t the last word. I have met many modern Biblical scholars that can make the scriptures come alive. I have sat in rapt attention listening to these ancient tales, only to be turned away when at the end, when the familiar altar call was recited. To quote a close friend, he said, “I am not afraid of going to hell, most of my friends will be there: I am afraid of not living, and living well.” Our thinking must eliminate the historic war scenario, and get on with living with each other. You don’t have to love everybody, as a matter of fact, you don’t have to like everybody, but you do have to love you. It is hard to love you if you don’t have a choice in your life, but when you find out how your choices have given you the life style and experiences you have lived, you can begin to appreciate the opportunity you have to make a difference. In Religious Science, we often hear, “Change your thought and change your life.” Thinking outside the boundaries of contemporary thought can propel you to a new and vibrant life. Be willing to explore new avenues of thought, you certainly won’t be bored. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
