Small Business Saturday and the four compass points

Bishop, CA—Following Thanksgiving, and sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday, celebrating the values of American small businesses. This year’s event, Saturday, November 27, promises to bring the Main Streets of America to the forefront of attention, as well as beginning the holiday shopping season. Started in 2010 by American Express, Small Business Saturday is a chance to meet neighbors, sample the local artisans and shops, and support the backbone of the American economy—the small business.

East Fishing can happen year-round on parts of the Owens River, including the waters near the East Line Street Bridge. Reagan’s Sporting Goods can hook you up with the latest fishing information, license, and bait and tackle. Fishing is also available at the Pleasant Valley Reservoir yearround, 24 / 7. The Laws Railroad Museum is hosting its annual Railroad Express train rides with Santa Claus on December 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This museum is a chance to share an experience, and the gift store has been refreshed with new items.

The Bishop Chamber of Commerce launched a promotion in Bishop in October using a grant from Coso Operating Company, and by shopping local and spending $50 or more, customers are able to get two free movie tickets to the Bishop Twin Theater. Participating members of the chamber have the tickets, while supplies last.

West The Yuhubi Nobi Gas Station and Market might seem like an unlikely place to find gifts and souvenirs, but you’d be surprised at the selection of unique items. Spacious fuel filling areas and big turnarounds make stopping and parking at this gas station a pleasure for small and large vehicles alike. Up West Line Street from the Yuhubi Nobi Gas Station and Market is the Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center with its museum and gift shop. Native American art, jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs are available, and many of the artists are local residents of the eastern Sierra. Manor Market, with its giant chicken atop the store, is a local shopping center, with organic, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and meats. Boasting the largest “beer corner,” Manor Market keeps the shelves stocked with unusual items to catch the most decerning customers’ attention. Manor True Value Hardware anchors the corner businesses, and the displays are filled with toys, pet products, housewares, and holiday decorations.

North Shopping the northern end of Bishop will find the Bishop Plaza, including the Big 5 sports outlet, Las Coras Mexican Food and Market, Rite Aid, and numerous other well-known businesses. Keeping company in the north end of Bishop is the Wanaaha Casino, with its popular TukaNovie Restaurant, Wannaha Lounge, gift shop, and Paiute Deli. The casino features slots, poker, table games, and a visit to the TukaNovie Restaurant on Thanksgiving will find a full meal on the menu. In search of interesting antiques and useable house wares, check out the Antique Peddler on US Highway 395. South South Main Street, Bishop, is recognizable by Allen’s Outdoor and its famous red horse. This family-owned and operated business caters to everything needed for your RV / camping / horse supplies / feed and grain / and western gear. Allen’s also serves the communities in the Owens Valley by supplying the U-Haul rentals. Headed toward the center of town, Ace High Country Lumber is a complete lumber and supply yard, and the nationally-known chain carries every imaginable tool, or construction rental department. High Country Lumber also has Trends Inside Out, a complete building and home improvement center.

Downtown Bishop The Bishop Twin Theater is a renovated entertainment center, and the theater does more than just show movies. Throughout the year, the Bishop Twin Theater has helped the town of Bishop and visitors see what kind of local support a business can have on a small town, and from memorials to retirements, the theater was the marquee of some of our most important moments. The Christmas cheer gets started on Saturday, December 4, with the annual Christmas Parade from 4:30-6 p.m. This year’s theme is “White Christmas,” and once the parade winds down, join in the fun of the Christmas Tree Lighting in the Bishop City Park, at dark. And, then watch Bishop come alive with the Street of Lights, and shopping opportunities, with special Christmas songs, goodies, and Santa Claus.
