Remaking Ourselves 2020

Sitting down with successes on old Main Street, Bishop, California

*This is part two of a three-part story about a 1900s storefront, and how it's going to be the newest “Bishop Job Spot,” a place where people can remake themselves in 2020-2021. Watch for part three in this story, as education changes its visions with the times. By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Downtown Bishop, CA-- It's fall 2020, and holiday plans are being re-imagined. Businesses on Main Street Bishop, CA, are in flux...as is the rest of the world. People are remaking themselves, daily, as they test their resiliency. Ability to change with the times.... Sitting on an old wooden bench in ground truth zero, in Bishop, CA, Randy Cook and I share notions about the newest long-term partnership of education, entrepreneurship, and community vision. The autumn interview location, at the center of Bishop, is home ground for Cook, who has spent most of his life in the Owens Valley. As the head of Bishop's real face-time Inyo County Office of Education's Adult Education program, Cook speaks about the potentialities of the newest education partnership. He says, with confidence, there is a “clear vision for it.” He's referring to the ongoing partnership between three visions for a personalized environment for adults continuing education's opportunities in the Owens Valley. Specifically, on Main Street, Bishop, CA, in “Dusey's Haberdashery,” an old 1900s building, with many lives. Within ear-shot of the 1940s building, the old Joseph's Market, owned by Monte and Cora Williams, downtown Bishop, until the current vacant building awaiting a new life, to the western wear Toggery's displays, western existence since 1922 (a continuously run business), from an old jail building, like Luxe Salon and Indy Coffee Roasting Company, to the building site of Ace Hardware, High Country Lumber, Bishop's Main Street, these good “ol' bones' structures” remain a living history lesson...if only we knew.

California at frontier of community college visions...since Gold Rush The remote tone and edges of California have made for firsts. Always. Since the Gold Rush days (historically, 1840s-1900s, but continues to now), California has succeeded were other states have not, and that pride is not forgotten on the Eastside of California. The Owens Valley and the town of Bishop have excelled at unmatched parallels in the world, including being the first, world's largest hydroelectric / utility in the world. So, it goes without saying that uncommon resources are brought together to get things done in a frontier landscape. And, that includes educating ourselves, no matter the age. California set the precedent for community colleges for the United States in the early 1850s. And by the 1900s, California was well established with a community college system-trend in America, which didn't compete with the four-year university experience. Here, in the Owens Valley, the Cerro Coso Community Colleges have been present in the region since 1973. Initially set up to serve a larger portion of the Naval Air Weapons Base, “NAWS,” at Ridgecrest, CA, for de-

The old, 1900s Dusey's Haberdashery building, will become a partnership / collaborative “Job Spot,” in downtown Bishop, CA. Located on Main Street, the building's new purpose will be an adult education center, where workforce development meets the expanding needs of an eastern Sierra original township. This partnership includes the Cerro Coso Community College, the Inyo County Office of Education, and the building's owners, Noe and Donna Gadea.

fense operations (1940s-post- WWII), the China Lake programs offered AA and Apprentice Training programs. Today, Cerro Coso Colleges' many branches, including the Eastern Sierra Community Centers of Bishop, CA and Mammoth Lakes, CA, are continuing to provide teaching which counts, ensuring access and benefits for all, aligning funding with a real purpose, and revisiting local governance with new projects like the Main Street “Job Spot,” in Bishop, CA.

“Co-Location,” Location, Location Cook, the Associate Superintendent, with the Inyo County Office of Education, says the “Job Spot,” downtown Bishop, is part of a consortium, a “co-location,” with adult education, in an eastern Sierra sub-region. He notes, ICOE was fortunate, a “great match,” when ICOE became a partner in building a new venue for

SAVE THE DATE! Save the date! Saturday, December 12th will bring several fun community events to celebrate the holidays at the Tri-County Fairgrounds in Bishop. First up, there will be an outdoor Christmas Crafters’ Market from Noon4pm. Shoppers will enjoy a wide variety of unique, handmade items at the open-air and safely distanced event. Anyone interested in being a vender should call the fairgrounds at (760)873-3588. In lieu of the traditional Main Street Parade, the Bishop Chamber of Commerce is working with local businesses and groups to offer a drivethru Christmas Light Display from 5-7pm. This year’s theme is “Home for the Holidays.” To register your business or organization’s display, contact the chamber at (760)873-8405. The same evening at 7:30 pm, the holiday favorite movie “Elf,” will play on the big screen at the fairgrounds drive-in theater. Santa will make an appearance and refreshments will be available. Admission to the movie will be free, thanks to sponsorship of Shop with a Cop organizers. While there is no charge for the movie, advance registration is required – visit www.tricountyfair.com to register.
