They are peacetime, combat, and noncombat American veterans, and at Thanksgiving time, it's appropriate for us to say a collective, “Thank You.” Rick Fields, Commander of the American Legion Post #457 for the past four years, recently took some time, along with Jessica Allmon, Inyo and Mono Counties' Veterans' Services Officer, to talk about the issues facing many of our veterans today. ans' Day ceremony in Big Pine, CA, Fields and others came together to salute and honor veterans of all the wars. Fields outlined the speakers and special guests who explained the importance of veterans. It's a close knit community, Fields noted about the veterans' groups in the eastern Sierra. However, they could use help with extra manpower, while the groups provide assistance for local vets in need. “This is the future of America, and the future looks good,” said Fields, when speaking about the younger people in the military, and service of their country. Sierra's only Veterans' Memorial, with hand placed rock work from materials gathered as far as the White Mountains. Flags flying for every branch of the service were a foreground for the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and anyone attending the Big Pine Veterans' Day ceremony can not miss the immense emotions of standing with our military members. Others from the Inyo County Sheriff's Department, Cal Fire, Big Pine Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, and emergency service responders joined in the solemn moment at the Big Pine Veterans' Memorial. Dan Daughtery, from Bishop schools' music departments, arranged for Ryan Forbis, a student at Bishop Union High School, to play the memorable Echo Taps for the ceremony. Jessica Allmon, who heads up Inyo and Mono Counties' Veteran Services Office, noted that the largest number of veterans are currently from the Gulf Wars (ages 25-45 years old). This is a huge area in California to service, and veterans' services are difficult to deliver in such a broad landscape. She also said, the public can gain a familiarity with veterans by asking what branch of service they come from, where they were stationed, what were some of the funniest stories, and asking about basic training experiences. These stories can be shared, along with these veterans starting families, working in our communities, and having these conversations are more meaningful. “Understanding and compassion,” for the veterans, Allmon noted, “broaden their [for community members] image of who a vet is.”

New exhibit at Laws Railroad Museum A new exhibit has just arrived at Laws Railroad Museum and Historic Site! The Museum has acquired, on loan, the restored Bodie Railway and Lumber Company (Bodie and Benton Railroad) flat car number 8, and it is on display on the Museum grounds. Several years ago, members of the Friends of the Bodie Railway and Lumber Company group were exploring the BR&L right of way and found the remains of a wrecked flat car. The metal parts were salvaged and cleaned up, but the remains of the wood parts were too far gone to salvage. The Friends located the number on the car and found the plans for it and started in on the restoration. The car was restored by the Friends of the Bodie Railway and Lumber Company about 17 years ago and has been on display in June Lake until last week. The restoration effort included acquiring custom cut full dimensional lumber to replicate the original lumber in the car. The restoration was completed in 2002 The Friends of the Bodie Railway and Lumber Company recently decided to dis-band, and turned ownership of the car over to the Bodie Foundation. The Foundation did not have a means of moving or storing the car, so

Winter brings injured birds to the Center As winter approaches, any late babies have been released. Our incoming patients consist primarily of juveniles (both birds and mammals). These young animals make mistakes as they develop their survival skills. Some birds fly into windows; others are hit by cars. Hunting skills are put to the test; days are shorter and prey is scarcer. Squirrels and woodrats wander into inviting holes in building skirting and juvenile skunks are looking there for mice. Recent admissions include a juvenile Sharp-shinned hawk who flew into a window at Domino's Pizza. Both a female Canyon Bat in Saline Valley and a juvenile Sawwhet Owl in Mono County most likely were hit by moving vehicles. Most such incidents result in concussions and fractures and require extended treatment. Living with Wildlife “nuisance” incidents call for counseling homeowners as to ways to exclude young mammals from their homes.
