Bishop, CA—Halloween and fall street scenes abound on Main Street in Bishop, and as the seasons change, so do the many window and shop displays in the downtown area. Shopping this time of year is quieter in the Eastern Sierra, and still a treat, as local stores gear up for the upcoming holiday season. Plenty of restaurants and parking locations make a stroll down Main Street a fun way to spend the day, whether you’re a resident or visitor, and the Bishop Twin Theatre keeps everyone excited about the latest movies playing in the updated theaters.

The Toggery, downtown Bishop, CA, is celebrating its 100th birthday with style and some unique window displays. 1903 Taphouse owner, Theresa Acree, visits with guests at the newly opened Main Street restaurant. Celebrating 100 years in the Owens Valley, the Toggery’s window dis plays bring elements of fashion and history to the life-like mannequins, with touches of whimsy and fun. Enjoy a Chicago Dog at the 1903 Taphouse restaurant, and try a tasty side of loaded potato salad, and a refreshing beer on tap, while you’re shopping Main Street in Bishop. Anne Marie’s Home Boutique is a downtown Bishop must-see store, with home decorations, tableware, kitchenware, beauty products, and everything seasonal for your home. The 25-year business started in 1997, “in a little red shop out on Highway 395,” the website says, and “in 2004, we moved locations to downtown Bishop.”

Bishop Lions Club

Manzanar Super intendent Bren da Ling (shown above, right) was presented a cer tificate of appreciation by the Bish op Lions Club for her recent Pow erPoint presentation on Manzanar National Park’s history and future activities. She invited Bishop Lions to individually or collectively visit Manzanar soon, rather than just drive by at 70mph and say to themself, “I’ll make the stop someday!”

Highlights of Superintendent Ling’s talk included a brief explanation of President Roosevelt’s calling on Congress for Executive Order 9066, which created the 10-camp incarceration program for Japanese-American citizens, and the fact that Manzanar was the only orphanage facility for all the camps. Additionally the Japanese-American internees were so productive with their agricultural knowledge and application of farming techniques they grew enough produce to feed the Manzanar internees and sell foodstuffs to the other camps, bringing income to the Manzanar operations. Another feature was an on-site hospital/clinic facility and a cemetery. Ms. Ling shared with the Bishop Lions that, as WWII wore on and behavior at Manzanar was prov en not to be hostile but in fact community-friendly, internees were allowed to travel on special occasions for medical and family reasons, as well as be ing able to form the “Manzanar Fishing Club” where fishermen were allowed off-camp to fish high up in the Sierra and bring back trout catch to bolster the camp menu and help feed the nearly 10,000 Japanese-American held at Manzanar over its 3 years of operation.

Lions Smith and Wooley indicate more programs are planned after the holi day season when the Lions move back to the Bishop VFW for their meetings on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at Noon. One of the next activities for the Bishop Lions is their annual student speakers contest for 9th-12th graders, with a contestant outreach underway now to the 4 local high schools and ho meschoolers in Big Pine and Bishop. More information can be obtained by calling President Smith at 760-937-2272

Big Pine Cemetery News

The Big Pine Cemetery District invites the public to the dedication of the Inyo County Hospital and Farm Burial Site on Saturday, Nov. 5. The program will be held at 11:00 at the Crocker Cemetery (600 Crocker Ave).

In the early 1900s, Inyo County provided a County Hospital and working farm on 80 acres. The County Farm was still in use as both a Tuberculosis Sanatorium and Home for the aged in the 1940s. The building was eventually converted into the Big Pine Care Center which was in use until 2000. When a resident of the hospital passed and had no other means for burial, they were buried in the southeastern part of the farm known as the Farm Cemetery which is now the northwestern part of Crocker Cemetery. Unfortunately, the original burial markers for these people have been lost over the years. The Big Pine Cemetery District is currently researching old county death certificates and newspapers to obtain the names of the residents buried here and have purchased permanent grave markers to acknowledge their final resting place.

Join us as we unveil the new marker and celebrate the memory of our fellow Inyo County residents.

Fall Street Sweeping

Leaves are starting to fall in Bishop and the city Public Works crew will be stepping up the street sweeping effort in response. The crew needs help from people that park ve hicles on city streets.

Street sweeping for leaves has started. The city crew will sweep each Wednesday and Thursday between about 7 am and 3 pm and will continue on this sweeping sched ule into December. The crew sweeps one side of the street one day and sweeps the other side the next day. To keep out of the way of the sweeper:

Don’t park on the west and north sides of city streets on Wednesdays while we sweep that side of the street. The north and west sides of the streets have odd-numbered addresses.

Don’t park on the east and south sides of city streets on Thursdays while we sweep that side of the street. The east and south sides of the streets have even-numbered addresses.

These “don’t park” times only apply when street sweeping is in progress –each Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 3 – and apply to the full length of one side of the street. Other times it is still okay to park.

The crew cannot sweep the street if vehicles are parked in the way. Also, properties along the streets are responsible for the removal of their own leaves. Don’t put your leaves on city streets. It overloads the sweeper, makes it much more difficult to do a good sweeping job, and costs more money.

For more information contact City of Bishop Public Works at publicworks@ cityofbishop.com or 760-873-8458.
