Luxe Salon and Indy Coffee Roasting Company to settle into new digs in Bishop By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CAâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Gunner and Deena Conway-Davenport needed a space to expand their coffee roasting, cottage foods, and salon businesses, and after some searching the couple who live in Independence, CA found a new set of digs on Main Street in Bishop, CA (about 40 miles north of Independence). Gunner, whose business is flourishing with the Indy Coffee Roasting Company, says the biggest surprise for the coffee business entrepreneur is â&#x20AC;&#x153;going from cottage foods to commercialâ&#x20AC;? endeavors. This isn't Gunner's first time at opening businesses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I've opened up five businesses,â&#x20AC;? but this is the first time â&#x20AC;&#x153;doing it all by myself.â&#x20AC;? And, the old jail house building the couple moved into is anything but a normal storefront. The brick building was dedicated on June 22, 2019, by the E. Gunner Conway-Davenport, owner of Indy Coffee Roasting Company, Clampus Vitus, Slim Princess Chapdowntown Bishop, CA, creates each specialty coffee by hand. Coffee ter #395, in cooperation with the products, and glassware are also available in the store. Inyo County Sheriff's Office, and a monument tells the story of the old Inyo County jail. Nearly 150 years ago, in 1870, John B. Clarke gave some land to Inyo County to erect a jail house, and in later years it was home to the Inyo County Sheriff, the Justice Court, and the Tax Collector. The coffee roasting section of the business is spacious, with a high-rise table and stools for visiting, and breakfast treats (such as pastries, with a dreamy cream cheese filling) neatly displayed at the counter. The pastries are made by Gunner, and there will also be Scandinavian pastries. The salon is open Thursday-Sunday, and Indy Coffee's Roasting Room is open on Sundays, Gunner adds. There are selections

of hand-brewed coffees, which Gunner explains is â&#x20AC;&#x153;a European style roast,â&#x20AC;? and these types of coffee have names in keeping with destinations in the eastern Sierra. Sip on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Twenty Mule Team Canyon,â&#x20AC;? or try a house favorite, â&#x20AC;&#x153;El Camino Sierra,â&#x20AC;? or savor their â&#x20AC;&#x153;Meysan Lakes Roast,â&#x20AC;? or perhaps find a perfect combination with â&#x20AC;&#x153;White Mountain Wilderness,â&#x20AC;? paired with an empanada (a turnover favorite in Latin cuisine). Indy Coffee Roasting Company's business features Latin, and international, flavor and music. Luxe Salon, which is in the front part of the old Main Street building, is Deena's world, and the customers are steady. Deena is a Bay Area stylist, with a following in the Owens Valley. The salon is a light-filled space, with graceful paper-white orchids growing in the window light. Uncommon stained glass art decorates the many sunny windows. The smells of coffee roasting and pastries permeate the interiors of the businesses, and outside, the artful murals of eastern Sierra icons (by artist, Judyth Greenburgh) dance along the sidewalk. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to have a plan,â&#x20AC;? to be successful, Gunner says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Consistencyâ&#x20AC;? is very important too. And it helps to have a great deal of â&#x20AC;&#x153;civic pride,â&#x20AC;? and want to be a part of the community, which Gunner notes are the main reasons for being in downtown Bishop, and a part of the Owens Valley. Indy Coffee Roasting Company serves customers from Lone Pine and Olancha, to Mammoth Lakes, and all parts in between, including distributing coffee products to local vendors, markets, and mail orders.

ESIA announces new manager Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association (ESIA) is pleased to announce that Wils Cain has joined the team as Communications and Membership Manager. In this role he will be responsible for promoting the interpretive programs that forge strong emotional and intellectual bonds between visitors and residents of the unique surrounding landscape of the Sierra Nevada. In addition, Wils will be responsible for driving ESIA’s membership program, fundraising events, volunteer programs, and contributing to the interpretive programs that educate and inspire our public land visitors. Molly Trauscht, who previously held this role, has taken on a new and expanded role of Program Operations Manager where she will focus her efforts on overseeing all educational programs and events. As the official non-profit partner with the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. National Park Service, and the Bureau of Land Management, ESIA helps build a strong connection between the public and the Sierra Nevada through its educational programs and events. Our member campaign is critical in providing the means to continue our mission, fund educational and interpretive programs, and support our partner agencies. Donations and member contributions allow the Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association to continue to educate and inspire the public to explore, protect, and care for this special region. The Use of Mind

Ernest Holmes wrote, “The Law of the Lord is Perfect,” and the law of the Lord is love. You are made perfect in the law when you enter into conscious communion with the love. Love is the fulfillment of the law; that is, it is only through love that the law can fulfill itself in your experience, because love harmonizes everything, unifies with everything. It gives to everything, flows through everything. You can never make the most perfect use of the law of your life unless that use is motivated by love.” The ancient Chinese sage said of the Tao (Spirit) Produces everything, nourishes everything, and maintains everything. It flows through everything. There is nothing outside of it. The essence of Spirit is love and givingness. That same love gave each of us life. Love is strength and resilience. It does not rust or tarnish. It casts out fear. It fulfills all aspects of the law. Somehow we have gotten the wrong idea about love. We have seen it with relationships. We profess it with our marriage vows, and sentimental songs. We follow the admonition of Jesus when he told us to love one another as I have loved you. We buy greeting cards that carry elaborate declarations of love. All those things are fine and dandy, but have we really seen love as the powerhouse that it is? Somehow, someway we have let love slip into the weaker category of expression, while we have elevated the brash and forceful elements of society. Our movies and literature portray those that love as victims of those that are tough and ruthless. The fact is that even the roughest and toughest desire love, and can and will respond to it. When I have held pre-marital counseling sessions with couples wishing to marry,’ I desire that each one come to this union with the hope that they can bring more to the marriage than attempting to get something out of it. The love of God gave each one, life. The gift has been given. What we do with that gift is on us. We can perpetuate the gift, by giving and accepting love or we can go our own way. From my experience and observation, I would recommend the way of love. I, myself am deeply in love with a wonderful and very loving lady. Loving her has given me more strength and happiness than I ever had before. That is not to take away anything from those I loved before. All have added to the quality of life which has given me greater fulfillment. All love is good, however; right now, I am putting romantic love on the top of the list. Lest I get mushy, we better get back to the love of God. Love is an essence, and love is an action, a noun and a verb. We use both aspects of love in our relationship to life. When we follow the example of Spirit and project love, we the can put it into action. God gave us the gift of free will. The fulfilling of the law is love. Choose to emanate love and love will find you. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!.
