Community Pink Day 2019 A day to remind us about early cancer detection, and saving lives

Celebrated in conjunction with National Mammography Day, Community Pink Day starts as a new tradition in the eastern Sierra this year. Look for the pink ribbons on the light posts in all of the small towns from Lone Pine to Bishop, CA.

Eastern Sierra, CA—Looking up and down Main Streets in the eastern Sierra / US Highway 395 corridor you'll find big pink ribbons attached to the light posts. A visual reminder about the importance of early cancer detection, and the ways in which we can all be a part of saving lives. And, as a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Mammography Day, local cancer and health care groups got together recently to proclaim October 18, 2019, as Community Pink Day. National Mammography Day, October 18, coincides with Community Pink Day. “This day [National Mammography Day] serves as a reminder to all women that the best defense is early detection. A mammogram can often detect a problem before there is any outward physical sign.” President Bill Clinton declared National Mammography Day in 1993.

A request by Eastern Sierra Cancer Alliance and President Patricia Ramirez started this push forward this past month, and a series of proclamations were made at Inyo County's Board of Supervisors meeting (September 17, 2019) and the City of Bishop's Council meeting (September 23, 2019). These statements were followed by a flurry of pink ribbons being placed in the small towns from Lone Pine to Bishop, CA. There were also Moon Light

Mammograms offered at the Northern Inyo Hospital, and there are more scheduled for convenience at NIH on October 21 and October 22, from 4-8 PM. Toiyabe Indian Health Project clinic, in Lone Pine, is offering mammograms on October 11, all day, and in Bishop, on October 25, all day. Southern Inyo Health Care District's mammograms are offered on October 18, all day.

Partnering in the Fight Against Cancer The Eastern Sierra Cancer Alliance helps people in the Owens Valley navigate the difficulties of cancer, and helps families with emotional, financial, and support services. ESCA is a non-profit, with its inception in 1999, by Patricia Ramirez. Established in 2001, ESCA serve all cancer individuals, of all ages, and there are several resources they provide on a regular basis. Ramirez says ESCA has been working diligently on forming a “Angel Mentorship” program that will provide one-on-one peer support to the community members having cancer.

This type of support can be beneficial and rewarding for both persons participating.

Regionally, the Northern Inyo Health Care District, the Southern Inyo Health Care District, and the Toiyabe Indian Health Project Clinics (in Bishop, Coleville, and Lone Pine, CA) are all engaged in pro-actively helping people connect with resources and medical assistance in the fight against cancer.

Bishop, CA—The journey to citizenship in the United States for Patricia Astorga took “five years to get,” she says, but “after you get this done [becoming a US citizen], you think you can do anything.” She's beaming a smile that signifies her pride in her accomplishments, and she notes her pursuit of becoming a U.S. citizen began in 2013, with the residency process (a two-year process). Following the residency process, she was interviewed for a visa at the Mexican Consulate, in Mexico (she lived for a year in Mexico while awaiting the completion of this phase of citizenship). Then, Astorga had a three year residency in the U.S., before she could apply for citizenship.

The Constitution test, which consists of 100 questions about the Constitution of the United States of America, is required of people applying for citizenship, and it is a daunting assignment to study for before taking the Oath of Citizenship. You must pass this hurdle, and the questions can be from many sections of the Constitution, and are randomly asked by the examiner. Astorga enlisted family members (the couple's daughter was asked by Patricia, “Who was the first President of the United States?” The youngster answered immediately, “George Washington.”) to help her study for months, and she says, with a laugh, she “studied while she cleaned and did chores” at home. The big day of citizenship came, and her husband Manny asked her three or four practice test questions while the couple were waiting for Patricia's test-taking time at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services field office in Fresno, CA. She adds, the examiner asked her three of those same questions, and she felt confident in her knowledge.

Taking the final Oath of Citizenship was a magical moment for Astorga, and her family and friends in Bishop, CA. She notes, with tears of happiness, that she feels proud of her efforts and success in becoming a new member and citizen of the United States. She is sharing her experiences with family, and they are celebrating her achievement. When asked what's the first thing on Astorga's list of things to be mindful of as a new citizen? She answers, she's studying for the upcoming elections [local, state, and national], and “the right to vote.”

Love Leads the Way We read in the book of John that God is love. Surely that love is more than can be expressed in a greeting card, and stronger, more powerful than the mealy-mouthed individuals portrayed in movies, maybe not able to leap buildings in a single bound, or faster than a locomotive, but more than capable of guiding and directing mankind. Love and Law guides us into the right use of love. Ernest Holmes wrote it thusly, “The law of the Lord is perfect,” and the law of the Lord is love. You are made perfect in the law when you enter into conscious communion with the love. Love is the fulfillment of the law; that is, it is only through love that the law can fulfill itself in your experience, because love harmonizes everything, unifies everything. It gives to everything, flows through everything. You can never make the most perfect use of the law of your life unless that use is motivated by love.”

God is Spirit and that Spirit is Love. Love is more than a feeling or emotion. Love constitutes the Whole of Creation. The motivation to create, the creation and guidance are all founded in love. Love is forward leading. Raymond Charles Barker reminds us that love and hate are the two ends of the same stick. If you are utilizing love, you can be assured of affirmative actions and transaction. On the other hand, the picture gets rather dark if motivated from the other side of the stick. There are varying degrees of love or hate radiating out from the middle of the stick, which is neutral. God can only be full on Love.

God’s creation, however; was lovingly given the gift of choice, whereas, we can limit our love or not express it at all. Of course, there are consequences to be had for limiting love or expressing hate, but since they don’t always take immediate effect, a great many people don’t equate ill health, financial failure or depression with their lack of love. Unfortunately, too many do not pay heed to the beauty and magnificent power of love.

There are over seven billion souls on this planet, we call earth. Everyone of them is a unique individual. Each one created out of love, and free to love everyone, and everything. Choosing to select only certain groups or people to love, and excluding others diminishes the quality of love. Jesus gave us two additional commandments. One was to love the Lord with all your heart, and the second was to love your neighbor as yourself.

Every man, woman and child is your neighbor.

Holmes gives us some affirmations to use: Today I bestow the essence of Love upon everything. Everyone shall be lovely to me. My soul meets the soul of the universe in everyone. Everything is beautiful, everything is meaningful. This Love is a healing power touching everything into wholeness, healing the wounds of experience with its divine balm.

I know that this Love Essence is the very Substance of Life, the creative Principle back of everything, flowing through my whole being, spiritual, emotional, mental and physical.

It flows in transcendent loveliness into my world of thought and form, ever renewing, vitalizing, bringing joy, harmony and blessing to everything and everyone it touches.

God is Love and Loving You Right Now !
