A Fall Day in Chalfant Valley 2022
By Christina Reed The Hired Pen
Seasonal and reasonable...two words that don’t go out of style
Chalfant Valley, CA—The Chalfant Big Trees Pumpkin Patch is a magical place for an fall day in Chalfant Valley, and with more than 3,500 pumpkins (Yes! No kidding.), games, treats, mazes, a pumpkin launch er, and more, it’s an all-around, win-win for visitors and the kids. Seasonal changes in Chalfant Big Trees’ plants and trees present the many shades of autumn in the Eastern Sierra, and the motto at Chalfant Big Trees is “If it’ll grow in Chalfant Valley, it’ll grow anywhere.” So, while the kids are picknicking by the wa terfall, you can check out the sales on fruit and shade trees (through October 31), and Chalfant Big Trees is open everyday until those pumpkins disappear.
Gina Barsi, owner since 2018, says the pumpkins come from Manteca, CA, and it takes a while to decorate and set up all of the attractions at the pumpkin patch. Giant Tic-tac-Toe games entice the young and older visitors to try a game of strategy, while enjoying the shady, park-like atmosphere. Others might enjoy the spook-ta-cular barn, or try your hand at finding the “surprise,” at the end of the maze. Age-appropriate Halloween decorations (not too scary) are surprises for the little ones, and the artful and playful displays encourage the older kids to explore some traditional school-carnival-like games, like ring-toss or washer
boards. Treats and seasonal gifts invite visitors to try local products, as well as get into the holi day spirit of things.
Chalfant Valley is about 13 miles north of Bish op, CA, off of US Highway 6. The small commu nity in Mono County, also has Flo’s Diner, which serves up dishes of old-fashioned 1950s din er-style favorites, and there is a market and gas is available. A classic diner for a family-friend ly, tasty end to your day in Chalfant Valley, and there is also a grassy and shady community park nearby, if the kids need to play and burn-off the milkshakes or piece of pie they might have had at Flo’s Diner for dessert. Have fun, fall is a fan tastic time of year to enjoy our Big Backyard!

Scott Marcellin, Inyo County Supervisorial District #3 Candidate 2022
“Everyone’s voice needs to be heard”
By Christina Reed
The Hired Pen
Bishop, CA—The Fall Candidates’ Forums are lined up for the final weeks of the elec tion season, and Scott Marcellin, a candidate for Inyo County’s District #3 supervi sorial seat, is getting in touch with constituents, and continuing with his networking in the Eastern Sierra. He’s researching topics about the county, acquainting himself with board and administrative procedures, and says, “I love this county.” He’s focus ing on what unites District #3 constituents, and notes he’s interested in “working together” with local, state, and federal agencies, as well as other entities in both Inyo and Mono Counties.
Marcellin and his family have deep ties to Inyo and Mono Counties, the Native Amer ican communities, and many business connections, which span more than 35 years. Marcellin’s family has been in the area since the late 1890s, when his great grandfa ther, August Maron, owned the Maron Ranch, off of US Highway 6; current location of the Hi-Lo water head near Chalfant Valley. Originally immigrants to Ellis Island, Emile Henry Marcellin came from Gap, France, in 1919, to America, and eventually Emile migrated west to Bakersfield, CA. A Basque sheepherder, Emile knew he’d find work in Bakersfield, and in 1921, Rosie (Emile’s wife) and Emile bought Rosie’s father’s Maron Ranch. Scott’s father, Roger, and Roger’s brothers (five of them) were born at Laws, CA. Scott and his wife bought their business, Rollins Electric (a family business since 1952), 35 years ago, and the family has raised their children in the Owens Valley. Marcellin is currently a fire commissioner for the Rural Fire Protec tion District, and he’s members of the Elks and Lions organizations. He has worked with the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department (1982-1995), coached Little League, served on the Swim Team board (as treasurer), and when it comes to electrical or wa ter systems, or city infrastructures, or working on the two hospitals’ infrastructures (Mammoth Lakes and Northern Inyo Healthcare District), Marcellin’s experience is extensive and expansive. He’s also helped install lighting and electrical systems at the Bishop City Park, Laws Historic Railroad Museum, local football fields, and the Dick Noles’ Memorial Fountain at Bishop City Park. “I do these things because I don’t want people to know,” he adds, and he’s been quietly contributing to commu nities up and down the Eastern Sierra for decades.
“We need a new mindset,” Marcellin says, and he has some concerns about the top topics in the region, which is one of his motivations for running for Inyo County’s District #3 supervisorial seat. “Housing” is at the top of the list, and he notes there are some “Master Plans” in the City of Bishop for this difficult element. He acknowl edges that housing is connected to many other concerns in the Owens Valley, in cluding recruiting and keeping employees in all of the businesses. Obtaining land for housing, Marcellin adds, will take the cooperation of all of the communities, and “working together.” He notes, “Our county [Inyo] employees are doing a great job,” and he’s doing his research on many of the county’s economic elements too, such as agriculture, to gain a deeper understanding about the region’s productivity. And, he adds, “Everyone’s voice needs to be heard.” Spending his entire life in the Eastern Sierra, Marcellin’s experience has brought him to all of the communities (including Fish Lake, Nevada), through either business or networking with the residents. As for Marcellin’s business and leadership style, he adds, with a smile, “I’d rather do everything the right way, than the hard way.”

THANK YOU HIGH COUNTRY LUMBER & AYSO COACHES!!
On October 1st, High Country Lumber hosted their first End Of Sum mer Sale Event and they generously asked if Bishop AYSO would be open to making it a Fundraiser to benefit our local soccer program, we were thrilled! In addition to a sale of their merchandise High Country Lumber hosted a band, fed the masses, had games with raffles and vendor booths. High Country Lumber sold Hot Dogs plus a Drink for only $1… who can beat that?! AND kids in uniforms received their Hot Dog and Drink for FREE!! Our AYSO Coaches volunteered for the Dunk Tank, they were all great with getting into it and taunting the kids trying to dunk them for $1 a ball. What a fun day, thank you so much to High Country Lumber, ACE Hardware for your generosity... seriously, they provided everything at no cost to AYSO and gave all money raised from the Hot Dogs and Dunk Tank to our program, OVER $1,155!!
Congratulations to the Raffle Winners, Gary Clark won the STIHL Blower & Chainsaw and Jerry Ennis won a Traeger BBQ!!
