Legendary baker and business icon will be missed

Bishop, CA—Erick Schat was a legendary baker and business icon, and his Schat’s Bakkerÿ® is perhaps one of Bishop’s best-loved businesses, afterall—who doesn’t like the smell of fresh bread, pastries, and cookies? Erick, 79, passed away on October 3, 2021.

He entered the Tri-County Fair and was very active with the California High School Rodeo finals. His bakery products were served at many special events in the area, and that table was always a popular place.

Schat’s Bakkerÿ® and the Original Sheepherder Bread® Erick’s success, a leader in the American Retail Bakers, he once said was a combination of a strong background in bakery products and techniques. “I’ve been baking the original Sheepherder Bread® (a registered trademark since Innovative and curious, Erick was constantly creating new breads, and he 1938) since I came here [B ishop] in 1962, and the way to get a good bread was particularly proud of the extraordinary freshness of his products. Jack Jr. joined the U.S. Army in the Vienna Bakery in 1905, and later, in 1922, this bakery was moved a couple of doors down 1951, and later Jack Jr. was able to sponsor some of his family members to come to the United on Main Street in Bishop. The Schat family purchased the Bishop Bakery Known for its unique States.
