Autumn Entertainment 2020

Winnedumah Casino adds games and pumpkin patches open ence Indian Community of Paiute Indians, and there are other tribal owned amenities nearby, such as the Oak Creek Dispensary, and the Fort Independence RV Campground, which is located near the Fort Independence Travel Plaza. These businesses are a part of the Fort Independence tribe's economic developments. The Travel Plaza helps support community programs and is a popular stop for tourists coming from the southern California area.

Pumpkins Abound Around Town What!? A pumpkin shortage? Nope, says Libby, the canned pumpkin people. Although the harvest was a bit delayed, “Mother Nature can't be rushed was the news from Libby. Posted on Instagram, “Keep calm and pumpkin on! There's talk on the internet of canned pumpkin shortages due to our “Covid-19 Stress Baking, which apparently is creating unusual situations with foods. We're all cooking earlier than normal and we're cooking more than normal at home.... The local Bishop FFA Farm turns out a nice pumpkin patch, and this year wasn't any different. There are also places near Bishop to seek out that perfect pumpkin for a Halloween jack-o-lantern, and with trick-or-treating being subjected to pandemic requirements, we all might just need to put our efforts into jack-o-lantern extravaganzas. The Winnedumah Winns Casino, located at the Fort Independence Travel Plaza, adds new games to the entertainment this month, and in November there will be poker games, a “first for the Owens Valley's casinos. Photos by The Hired Pen By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Get ready to enjoy some autumn entertainment as the Winnedumah Winns Casino expands with new machines / games and thanks their customers for visiting the entertainment center in Independence, CA. It's party time at the Winnedumah Winns Casino, at the Fort Independence Travel Plaza, located on US Highway 395, north of Independence. The new games, says Pedro Andrade, casino manager, will add to the slot machines in the casino, all with high definition, state-ofthe-art games, and Las Vegas-style gaming. The new machines are “a good fit for us and our customers, notes Andrade, who has been in the gaming industry for the past 20 years. Andrade is focused on keeping the staff and customers safe during the pandemic, and he notes that with the additional requirements, “everyday is something different, which he adds is a part of what makes the job interesting. More games means the casino entertainment is “more accessible to customers. Come November there will be poker machines, which Andrade says is a “first in the Owens Valley. Customers come from far and wide, and Andrade mentions a “mix of people from Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, and Ridgecrest who are visiting the Winnedumah Winns Casino. Open from 8 a.m.- midnight, there have been changes made to the casino's hours with the restrictions put in place for the pandemic. Andrade adds there will be a drawing on December 27, along with cash give aways, beginning at 6 p.m. The Winnedumah Winns Casino is a part of the Fort Independence Travel Plaza, and the casino has been operating for nearly a decade. The Fort Independence Travel Plaza is a part of the Fort Independ-

It's pumpkin patch time at Bishop's FFA Farm, and last weekend's events turned out to be just delightful for families and the high school students running the farm. Photo by The Hired Pen

October 15 – 21, 2020

Monday, Oct. 19 is last day to register to vote in November 3rd election The voter registration deadline to vote in the November 3rd Presidential General Elections is Monday, October 19, 2020. This is the last day to register and receive a mailed ballot, which provides voters the choice to vote by mail, drop off the ballot in a drop box, or drop off at a polling center or vote in person on Election Day. Paper registration forms are available at the Elections Office in Independence and all Inyo County post offices. Online registration is available at RegisterToVote.ca.gov. Registration after October 19, 2020 is only available in person at the Elections Office in Independence with both registration and casting a vote required on the same day. For voter registration efficiency and flexibility, it’s recommended to register by the October 19th deadline. Anyone who has recently moved is encouraged to check their registered mailing address at VoterStatus.sos.ca.gov. “No one in Inyo County will have to choose between their health and exercising their right to vote,” said Kammi Foote, Inyo County Registrar of Voters. “It’s important all Inyo County citizens understand the facts of how and when you can vote in the November 3rd election, and to make a plan.” Locations of polling places and ballot drop boxes, the Sample Ballot booklet, and registration to track your ballot can all be found at elections.inyocounty.us. If you have any questions regarding voting in this election you are encouraged to contact Inyo County Elections at 760-878-0224 or kfoote@inyocounty.us.

Fighting the flu More important than ever before

Getting a flu vaccine is more important than ever this year. Flu vaccine helps protect you and your loved ones from the flu and can help reduce burden on hospitals and healthcare systems already taxed during the coronavirus pandemic. Northern Inyo Healthcare District encourages you to see your primary care provider as most offices carry the vaccine. You can also visit local pharmacies for your flu shot as many insurances cover the cost. Also watch the Inyo County Public Health website for any upcoming flu shot clinics.
