Eastern Sierra Counties gear up for General Election 2020 out in the mail. “Every registered voter in the state of California will receive a vote-by-mail ballot in the General Election,” says California Secretary of State, Alex Padilla. Inyo County's ClerkRecorder and Registrar of Voters, Kammi Foote, notes, “This year, all Inyo County voters will be mailed a ballot with important voter information where your polling place will be located inside of the envelope with the ballot, beginning October 5, 2020. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by November 3, 2020. Ballots returned to a secure ballot drop box must be deposited by 8:00 p.m., on November 3, 2020. Inyo County's voters can chose to: 1. mail in the ballot 2. drop the ballot into one or more of the secured voter drop boxes 3. vote in-person 4. take your completed ballot to a polling place within the county, or 4. authorize a relative or person living in the same household to return the ballot on your behalf. Inyo County ClerkRecorder and Registrar of Voters, Foote says, “No one has to chose between voting and their health.” As a side note: 78 percent of Inyo County's registered voters voted “absentee” ballots, in pre-pandemic elections, according to Foote, and she says, “We are well prepared to scale up” for the upcoming election. “Really confident.” Foote explains, every vote-by-mail ballot goes through a “methodical” process of being checked against a roster, which confirms vote-by-mail ballots by signature, and whether the vote-bymail ballot has been received. Later, in the process, vote-by-mail ballots are recorded, and given credit. These careful steps prevent more than one vote from being cast. One ballot cast, and vote early, if possible.

Inyo County's Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters, Kammi Foote, explains the General Election process for registered voters of the state of California's second largest county. Inyo County Elections will be holding a Virtual Town Hall Meeting on October 5, from 6-7 p.m. Foote will discuss all aspects of the upcoming election.

Voting by mail is safe and easy Following marking your choices on your ballot: 1 Seal it. Secure your ballot inside the envelope. 2 Sign it. Make sure your signature on your ballot envelope matches the signature on your CA driver license or state ID, or the one you gave when you registered to vote. 3 Return it. By mail, make sure it's in the mail by November 3, 2020. No stamp required. 4 Track it. You can sign up for this at wheresmyballot.sos.ca.gov for alerts by text, email or voice call on the status of your vote-by-mail ballot. Mail your ballot in Inyo County, in your signed envelope, by October 27, 2020. Not registered to vote? You can check at elections.inyocounty.us.

There will be six secured Ballot Drop Boxes in Inyo County: Bishop City Hall 377 West Line St.; Big Pine Town Hall 150 Dewey Street; Independence Courthouse (indoor) 168 N. Edwards St.; Statham Hall 138 Jackson St. Lone Pine; Death Valley Visitor Center Multi-purpose Room (indoor), and Tecopa Senior Center Tecopa Hot Springs Road. “Voters who can vote by mail will help ensure safe physical distancing at voting locations,” says Secretary of State, Padilla. Inyo County voters who do vote in-person must be prepared to follow “Vote Safe California” protocol for Covid-19. Wear a face covering while at the voting location. Keep two arms' length distance from others. Wash your hands before and after entering the voting location. Use hand sanitizer after touching doors or voting equipment. Bring a ballpoint pen to avoid touching high-contact surfaces. There are five Vote in-person locations: Bishop: Paiute Professional Building and Heritage Arts Building at the Tri-County Fairgrounds; Big Pine Town Hall; Independence, in the Courthouse basement, and Lone Pine's Statham Hall. Official Observers (those issued badges) to the election process should not wear any campaign hats, pins, or T-shirts during any part of the voting process. Any public display of campaign or protest material or individuals must maintain a 100-foot distance from any polling place.
