Bishop’s Community Garden in Autumn 2022

Masters at gardening and community gardeners share their bountiful information and gardens

Bishop, CA—It’s autumn in Bishop’s Community Garden, near the City Park, behind the exercise equipment / gym area, and while you might think it’d be quiet and relatively empty in the gardening areas, you’d be wrong. There are people clearing their plots of weeds, others are planting fall seeds in the sharing garden, and UCCE (University of California Cooperative Extension) Master Gardeners from Inyo and Mono Counties are inviting the public and members of the California Natural Resources Agency to join them in touring the spacious gardens. Opening to the community in 2011, the Bishop Commu nity Garden is a continuing labor of love, and its gardeners are sharing in the community-gardening growth spurt.

The California Natural Resources Agency team is visiting the gardens, and the Bishop Community Garden is hoping to receive an Urban Greening Grant. The grant would assist the Bishop Community Garden with irrigation, infra structure, and other garden improvements and expansion. Currently, there are plots for rent, and there is also a Sharing Garden, for community members, and as you walk around the gardens, you realize there are fruits, vegetables, flowers, Monarch butterflies, honey bees, birds, and with the City Park nearby, it’s a delightful place to spend some time in nature.

The Bishop Community Garden has extensive signage for the plants and flow ers, and new signs in Spanish. It’s hoped that more community members will take part in becoming involved with the gardeners, and some of the ongoing projects. There are about 60 Master Gardeners in Inyo and Mono Counties, says Laura Mogg, a Master Gardener, and there are programs and projects happening throughout the year. “The fall is a really nice time of year” in the gardens, notes Mogg, and she demonstrates different types of composting for the flower and vegetable plots. In the Sharing Garden, Mogg explains, people can enjoy tomatoes, beans, herbs, and a variety of other vegetables (in sea son). “What’s not eaten,” Mogg continues, “gets donated to the Soup Kitch en.” Bright red Amaranth plants (used for the nutritious grain and the greens) share the sunny plots with other pocket garden areas, demonstration gardens, and the every-changing Children’s Tomato Garden.

Future gardens within the Bishop Community Garden include the develop ment of a Perennial Food Plants area, with a fig, pomegranate, and weeping plum trees, and another area for medical plants and herbs, says Pat Barni, a Master Gardener. Barni also does topiary tree / bush work at the Bishop Community Garden, and she’s clipped and shaped a bush to become a Bish op Mule, complete with big ears. Denise Waterbury is enjoying watching the

Monarch butterflies take nectar from the tall and bright orange Mexican sun flower plants. Waterbury is celebrating eight years of gardening in her plot, which provided okra, beans, onions, garlic (in winter), watermelon radishes, peppers, and tomatoes.

The Lone Pine Film Festival

The Museum of Western Film History is excited to present the 32nd Lone Pine Film Festival October 6-9, 2022 — ROOTIN’ TOOTIN’ MOVIE SHOOTIN’. This Indig enous People’s/Columbus Day weekend event has become a hallmark of Lone Pine, with film screenings, movie site location tours, presentations, horseback riding, Main Street Parade, Arts and Crafts Fair and much more. The Festival is celebrating the 50th Anni versary of THE COWBOYS starring John Wayne with special guest, Robert Carra dine; the 100th Anniversary of the silent film JUST TONY starring Tom Mix with live music composed and performed by Jay C. Munns; and the 30th Anniversary of UN FORGIVEN which stars, Clint Eastwood.

Celebrities and invited guests of this year’s festival will include: Monte Markham, Pat rick Wayne, Christopher Mitchum, Claude Jarman Jr., and Cheryl Rogers-Barnett, Bruce Boxleitner, Darby Hinton, Tony Cameron, Diamond Farnsworth, Wyatt McCrea, William Wellman Jr, and Jay Dee Witney.

A highlight this year is THE GAY CABAL LERO tour with noted film scholar Luis I. Reyes who just released a new book “VIVA HOLLYWOOD” who will provide inter esting commentary of Cesar Romero and Chris-Pin Martin. Luis will also be on our

panel to discuss “Behind the scenes in Hol lywood.”

Lone Pine is the only festival where fans can tour film locations and this year the festival has returning tour favorites — THE TALL T starring Randolph Scott, DANGEROUS VENTURE with Hopalong Cassidy, and YELLOW SKY starring Gregory Peck.

The Sunrise Tour with cowboy poet, Larry Maurice is not to be missed. This year, the festival is including SLOW BURN with Josh Brolin, Minnie Driver, and James Spader filmed amidst the boulders, canyons, and rocky outcroppings of the Alabama Hills — the scene for over 400 action-packed films.

In Spainhower Park, “Art in the Park” will anchor the north end of Main Street from 9am-6pm on Friday and Saturday and 9-3 Sunday. It’s a community fair featuring outstanding local artisans, excellent food and desserts, and features live music. There will be a Kids Corner on Saturday. Add in a closing campfire at 7:30pm and the week end is complete.

Other special events include the VFW Pan cake Breakfast supporting our veterans on Saturday and Sunday, and on Sunday — the Cowboy Church on the Anchor Ranch and the Main Street Parade featuring local stars as well as the celebrities ending with a clos ing campfire in Spainhower Park at 7:30pm with host, Larry Maurice.
