Bishop, CA—The Bishop City Park is the place to be on Saturday, October 16, starting at 9 a.m., the 21st annual Eastern Sierra Cancer Alliance (ESCA) 5K Fun Run and Walk takes place. The Fun Run and Walk supports the ESCA, which in turn supports Inyo and Mono Counties’ cancer patients and families.

The Cancer Resource Center, in Bishop, CA, is provided by the Northern Inyo Healthcare District, and Shallcross credits NIH’s rent free building as a strong part of the ESCA’s success.

“Eastern Sierra Cancer Alliancegives financial aid to those in the community in Inyo and Mono Counties,” says Andrea Shallcross, Treasurer of ESCA. “We are an organization that cares about their struggle.” Shallcross explains ESCA provides support to cancer patients in the form of financial, emotional, and educational assistance. This assistance might include physical and financial help, such as providing fuel, travel, lodging, meals or even car tires, and through co-pays, help offset costs caused by the cancer.

The organization receives donations, and Shallcross notes, the 12 board members review the applications, and “decide what we can do” to assist. The goal, she adds, is to “spend all the money” donated. The cancer resources available through ESCA include a Cancer Conversation Support group (meets the first Tuesday of the month, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.), and Angel Mentors who provide caregivers support.
