Fall Traditions 2020

Charitable acts start early with the first signs of autumn By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—The High Sierra is experiencing autumn in different ways, but some of the traditions of the season are starting early. Charitable organizations, like the Salvation Army, are beginning their annual food, clothing, and toy drives earlier than usual in an effort to make up for lost time and contributions, due to Covid-19 pandemic. And, locally in the Owens Valley, the loss of larger department stores have left some scrambling to find these charitable items in their hometowns, without shopping online, and staying local. There are local businesses which carry blankets, sleeping bags, coats, jackets, food, and toys (for ages 513). Heading up the local Salvation Army's effort to get clothing, blankets and sleeping bags, toys and food into the food pantry, Sherry McConnell says the “Angel Tree program is starting now. She notes people can get “registered at Walmart for the Angel Tree program, and it is connected to / with shipping to Bishop, CA. People donating items can drop them off at the Salvation Army office at 621 W. Line Street, in Bishop, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. McConnell also says the food pantry is in need too. “We really need soups and tuna. There is also a Food Drive planned by the Salvation Army, in front of the Grocery Outlet, in Bishop, on November 14, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. McConnell says this is a Christmas Collection Event, and residents are encouraged to support this early effort for the holidays, and the season of giving. Nationally, the Salvation Army is planning on having the traditional bell ringers start earlier than normal, again, due to the pandemic and the anticipated needs of the nation during these difficult times.

Leaf Peepers Visit Reopened Inyo National Forest The Inyo National Forest reopened for limited front country uses on October 3, after being closed to all visitors and residents for nearly three weeks. It's a welcome moment for residents and visitors alike, and the fall colors have started in the higher elevations in the past weeks. Still changing to the radiant autumn colors are places like Bishop Creek, McGee Creek and Convict Lake areas in Mono County, and around the June Lake loop. Fishing continues to be challenging, what with the smoke and camping restrictions of recent weeks. However, now visitors and locals can drive up the canyons and get out to stroll among the aspens and the mountain vistas. Please remember, the Eastern Sierra region has been pummeled by visitors, many who are not taking the necessary steps to clean up after themselves. Up and down US

Fall colors in the Eastern Sierra are legendary, and in fact are some of the best places in the country to see the many colors of autumn. Round Valley's golden rabbitbrush and Mt. Tom are some of the local places to see the colors of fall in the Owens Valley. Photos by The Hired Pen

Highway 395, forest and park managers have noted the huge amounts of litter and trash in the national forests. Please do your part to keep our parks and mountains open by picking up after yourselves when you visit. Pack out your trash, please! Covid-19 protocols apply to the forests and day-use areas, and masks and social distancing are required to be in public areas with others. The back country and wilderness areas of the region remain closed until December 1, 2020.

Although I was born and raised in Mexico City, I am a 30-year resident of Bishop and I am proud to call Bishop my home. I graduated as a Doctor of Dentistry in Mexico. I utilize my skills, education and experience providing interpreting and translation services for our community through my work at Northern Inyo Healthcare District as the Manager of Language Access Services for over 13 years now. Over the years, my community service includes: 1. Organizing the Latino Village during the Annual Millpond Musical Festival, and serving as Board member for Inyo Council for the Arts, 2. Advisor for BUHS Latino Club, 3. President of La Causa, a local organization dedicated to providing education and awareness about the cultural differences and similarities in our community, and 4. At the state-level, seven years as Board member, plus five years as President, and one as Chairman of the Boar for the California Healthcare Interpreting Association. I did not wake up one day and say “I am going to run for City Council,” I take community service very seriously. For me, being a City Council member is not a job nor a burden, it is a calling to serving my community. Seven years ago, I thought about running for City Council and I decided to prepare myself in order to effectively function as one. In 2013 I’d apply for and was appointed as member of the City of Bishop Planning Commission, and I have been serving in that capacity. In 2016 I was elected to the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and I graduated from the Eastern Sierra Leadership Program, class of 2018. My knowledge of the city’s resources, challenges and limitations along with my education and leadership experience are my qualifications to support my candidacy for Bishop’s City Council. I am committed to promoting inclusivity, fairness and equity in order to properly represent all of Bishop's residents. As City Council member, I will work for and in alliance with our residents and regional partners towards maintaining Bishop a vibrant and safe community for our children and future generations. Ensuring the city is governed with transparency and efficiency, allocating the appropriate funding to improve public spaces and services, while promoting the creation of mixed zoning use and affordable housing. I respectfully ask for your vote this November 3rd, and I look forward to serving you as your City Council Member.

Flu vaccine helps protect you and your loved ones from the flu and can help reduce burden on hospitals and healthcare systems already taxed during the coronavirus pandemic. Northern Inyo Healthcare District encourages you to see your primary care provider as most offices carry the vaccine. You can also visit local pharmacies for your flu shot as many insurances cover the cost. Also watch the Inyo County Public Health website for any upcoming flu shot clinics.
