Tee Time!

Fall Golf Tournament benefits National Wounded Warrior Center By Christina Reed The Hired Pen “Golf is a game, and games are meant to be enjoyed”-Raymond Floyd Bishop, CA—It's time to tee off at the fourth annual fall golf tournament benefiting the National Wounded Warrior Center (to be built in Mammoth Lakes, CA) on Saturday, September 14, with a shotgun start at 9 AM, at the Bishop Country Club. Robert and Vicki Waggoner, with the National Wounded Warrior Advisory Committee, are pulling out all of the stops for this big fund raiser. In fact, it's so popular, Waggoner advises

calling ahead to the Bishop Country Club (760-873-5828) to make your arrangements, as the spots quickly get taken. The fund raising goal for this event is $15,000, says Waggoner, and “there's a pretty good chance of making it.” The monies raised go directly to the ongoing National Wounded Warrior Center's creation. The plans are moving forward for a groundbreaking in the spring of 2020, and Waggoner says the fund raising activities are “closing in on $10 million.” The overall project has an estimated cost of $14.5 million. This year's golf tournament line-up for silent auction items, raffles (also a 50 / 50 raffle),

The fourth annual fall golf tournament, September 14, at the Bishop Country Club benefits the The National Wounded Warrior Center, in Mammoth Lakes, CA. The NWWC is nearing its groundbreaking in the spring of 2020. Unique in the United States, the NWWC will help injured servicemen and women transition into civilian life with opportunities for education, vocational training, rehabilitation, health and wellness. hole prizes, sponsors, and team prizes is impressive this year. There will be Stars and Stripes' prizes with flags being given out at the tee box goal, and exiting the green, and keeping with the fun tradition of the tournament, there will be homemade cookies and soft drinks at Holes #8 and #15. There are opportunities of purchasing raffle tickets throughout the course, and Waggoner adds there are awards for “The Closest to the Pin,” and “The Longest Drive.” Team prizes include a duke's mixture of one gross score and blind bogeys. And, one lucky player, with a hole-in-one on Hole #17, will drive away with a brand new car from Perry Motors. Waggoner notes there are a lot of Hole-in-One sponsors this year, including sponsoring a veteran. The Veterans of Foreign War

(VFW) Post #8988 is sponsoring a “Viva la vino” hole, and Northern Inyo Hospital is sponsoring the breakfast for the tournament's players. Joining the family fun this year are the miniature donkeys from the BB Ranch, Glendora, CA, with a petting zoo, at the #15 tee box. Spectacular, High-Flying Silent Auction Prizes Waggoner is excited about the silent auction prizes which include a scenic flight over the eastern Sierra by Jerry Core, in his Cessna 182 airplane, followed by a dining experience for two at Sage Restaurant in Bishop; a Crowley Lake gift package, with cabin lodging, and half day guide trip / boat tour; two bottles of fine wine from Manor Market; a Convict Lake all-day pontoon boat rental and gift certificate to the restau-

rant, an original watercolor painting by Mike Ishikawa, a framed wildlife photograph by Marilyn Buhler, and lodging for two nights at the Grand Sierra Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada. The National Wounded Warrior Center (started in 2007) in Mammoth Lakes will be a unique place for servicemen and women to heal, rehabilitate, get

help with vocational training, and benefit from the natural beauty of the Sierra. The Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra (founded in 2003) is at the core of the center with its annual adaptive therapeutic recreation opportunities. The center will be located next to the Cerro Coso College, and will offer families a place to stay with the veterans during their time at the NWWC.

Although missing his deceased sibling, the Country Club Cooper's snuggles in his warm "nest" in the critical care ward. Wildcare Eastern Sierra has admitted several young Cooper's Hawks these past few weeks. Cooper's Hawks are birds of prey, members of the Accipter family; they primarily hunt other birds. Usually the last raptor species to breed each season, this year parents were exceptionally late in hatching out their young. On July 23rd, Wildcare received calls from Crags Campground at Twin Lakes, southwest of Bridgeport. The campground manager had received several reports from guests of a bird of prey on the ground, most commonly described as a "baby Bald Eagle." Responding to our urgent call, Wildcare volunteer Gary, from Lee Vining, headed to the campground where he located the downed bird. It was a young raptor, but definitely not an eagle. Gary was unable to spot the nest from which it had come. Our "Pony Express" kicked into The Crag's Campground Cooper's Hawk soon after arrival at action. (One volunteer trans- Wildcare's hospital. ports a patient partway toward Keough's, a second takes it another leg, and often, yet a third gets it to the care facility.) Upon arrival at the Center, the "eagle" was identified as a nestling Cooper's Hawk, only a few weeks old, and uninjured. Because of our inability to find the nest, he could not be returned to his parents. He would settle in for a long stay while growing in his feathers and learning to fly and hunt. A few weeks later, on August 7th, a random thunderstorm, complete with hefty gusts of wind, whipped through the Bishop Country Club course. Shortly thereafter, Stephen and his golfing companions spotted downed branches and two fuzzy white birds on the fairway grass near a tree. Both baby birds were placed in a container and held at the club office. The Center is only a few minutes from the Country Club and a staff member promptly left to pick up the unlucky nestlings. One of the siblings was dead on arrival. The survivor was healthy and uninjured. The damage to the nest, and loss of one sibling, made reuniting her with her parents an unlikely possibility. And, because she was a few weeks younger than the earlier Cooper's arrival, she would have to grow up by herself. [Coincidentally, two days after her arrival, a mother and son who were camping at Keough's stopped by to say "Hi " to our wildlife ambassadors, Razzle the Raven and Red-tailed Hawks Spirit and Bullitt. The young man excitedly told me that he had helped rescue a "baby Bald Eagle" at Crag's campground! He was even more excited when he learned that the "eagle" was doing well at the Center. We gave him a quick peek at the little Cooper's and a big "Thank you!" for the part he played in saving her life.] During the next few weeks, two other young Cooper’sand one Goshawk (from the same A cipiter family) – were admitted. Sadly, like many raptors (and other young teenage birds), they had been unable to hunt will enough and were starving. Despite our best efforts, they could not be saved. Here at the Center, the Twin Lakes hawk is flying well in a 25-ft. aviary; the Country Club Cooper's has recently begun flying and perching in a smaller cage. In another week or so, we will introduce the two youngsters to each other. They will continue their conditioning together until ready to be released.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

The Will of God

Recently I was asked, “How do I know what the Will of God is for me?” This question and ones related to it have been asked by many. Does God have an intentionality? is another. The answer is not difficult, but is not always received with satisfaction. To comprehend the final answer, if at all, one must identify what their concept of God is. If God be a super being with all the emotional outbursts of mankind, it could be one thing, and if God be Spirit or life itself, it is another. So many religionist have placed God in the Super-Being mode, but they failed to look at the long term results of God’s will; looking only at a dogmatic rendition of their faith If you really want an answer to the question, you must check out the evolution of life from the depths of the marches of long time past, to the emergence from the swamps, the evolution of man, and the development of technology. Everywhere you look we have progressed to be a healthier race, in that one might say that the Will of God was for continued growth and healthier living. In short, God’s Will is for the continued progression of the earth and it’s inhabitants. You may recognize this as abiding within the realm of nature. Nature forever moves forward. Even the destructive forces contained in nature, help to preserve it. The Will of God for you is a quality of life, because that perpetuates life. God is Spirit, and Spirit is Life. When we are enthusiastic we say we are spirited. It really means we are full of God. Enthusiasm begats energy. The more enthusiasm we have for life the more energy we have. Depression represents a lack of enthusiasm, which results in little energy going to life. When we have an enthusiasm for love, the energy increases exponentially, and can grow beyond preconceived restraints. Energy, by itself is neutral. A lit match can either start a warming fire or burn your house down. How we use the energy determines what it does. It is ironic that we could use loving energy to be destructive, however; the wrong use of that energy can indeed be damaging. We have choice, and how we use that choice will detrermine God’s Will. Use it lovingly and the opportunities abound. It says in the Bible that God looked at everything that had been created and called good. For God so loved the world… it is written. We are the beneficiaries of that love and as Jesus said, “Love one another as I have loved you.” The will of God and our charge is the same; to love, to share, to give a hand up. “love your neighbor as yourself.” Let that will guide you, sustain you, and maintain you. That is the Will of God. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
