THE SIERRA Check us out online: www.TheSierraReader.com Like us on Vol. XXIII, NO. 37 By Christina Reed The Hired Pen “To manage California's diverse fish, wildlife, and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and for their use and enjoyment by the public”--California Department of Fish and Wildlife's mission statement The Eastern Sierra Nevada, the White Mountains, and the Great Basin—One of the most diverse places on the planet, and surely unique in California, is this region of the state we reside within; including some of the world's best known parks, like Yosemite, Sequoia, Death Valley, and the highest lake (Tulainyo Lake), the highest mountain (Mount Whitney), the oldest living tree (Methuselah Bristlecone pine), and the lowest point in the US (Badwater Basin, in Death Valley). This area is known for extremes in beauty, weather, geology, geography, history, and flora and fauna. The job of maintaining and conserving these resources for the public falls to a number of state and federal agencies, one of which is present, at all times, is the Department of Fish and Wildlife. An agency with nearly 150-years of existence in the state, the DFW (which used to be called the Department of Fish and Game until its name change in 2013) is divided into regions, and we live in the Inland Deserts Region (including Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Imperial Counties). The species the DFW manages is a vast list: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, plants, marine life, and invasive species. Tule elk and Golden trout are two unique species that reside in California only, and the Tule elk can be viewed near the open spaces south of Big Pine, CA, and the Golden trout are found in some of the eastern Sierra mountain lakes, and wild trout designated waters. We also enjoy many of the larger mammals found in the state, such as cougars (mountain lions), bobcats, mule deer, black bears, bighorn sheep, as well as black-tailed jackrabbits, raccoons, beavers, marmot, the popular fish species of rainbow and brown trout, birds of the region include Stellar's jays, western bluebirds, and many upland game and migratory birds. “People come here [Sierra Nevada] for the tradition,” says Dailey. “It's the family time, and the outdoor activities.” Dailey notes that whether people are here for hunting, fishing, or recreating, DFW tries to “remind people the resources belong to everyone. The rules and regulations are your responsibility [to know].” And, he adds, there is a smart phone app, which can locate you and tell you the fishing or hunting regulations for that place. Currently, the deer hunting season, along with Upland Game birds (such as Quail, Forest Grouse, Ptarmigan, and Band-tailed Pigeon), has started, and Dailey notes, getting tags for deer hunting in our specific zones is not easy. The eastern Sierra has “coveted tags for all the zones,” and he adds, the region is considered in the “premier draws.” Hunters who do get tags, some have waited for six to eight years, are up here “doing their homework,” or “scouting the areas,” Dailey says. Fishing season is still open, but there are angling regulations that go into effect in the fall, like barbless hooks and catch and release waters. “Curiosity Killed the Cat” Inyo and Mono Counties' teenagers, seventh and eighth graders, 4-H students, and high schoolers, can take part in a Hunter Education Safety Course, either online (Huntercourse.com) or through the schools. This DFW-approved program, not open to the general public, in these schools was pioneered in Inyo and Mono Counties, explains Dailey, and teenagers in Round Valley, Bishop Middle School, Big Pine, Independence, and Coleville have learned hunter safety, conservation, gun safety, and outdoor etiquette through the classroom and four-hour course. Dailey says the programs have worked out “beautifully,” and the points of teaching about hunter education are conservation, protecting resources, and gun safety. “Curiosity killed the cat,” says Dailey. The proverb being a warning of the dangers of unknowing experimentations or investigations by those who do not know the dangerous situation. The DFW's Hunter Safety Training Program began in 1954, and requires people under 16 years of age to obtain a certificate of competence with firearms (for four hours) before getting a hunting license.

The Wildlife Around Us

Mule deer herds are still high in the Sierra Nevada, but soon the migrations will begin to the valleys, once the winter snows set in. Mule deer in the eastern Sierra zones, like X9A (near Bishop, CA), X9B (near Lone Pine, CA), and X12 (near Bridgeport, CA) are coveted hunting zones, and hunters could wait for decades to draw a tag. Don't give up, though! Sporting goods stores, tackle shops, and places where they sell hunting and fishing licenses have maps, and rules and regulations in booklets to help you navigate the Department of Fish and Wildlife's immense Inland Deserts Region. sources are permitted to be hunted or taken, with licenses, during official hunting and fishing seasons. Lieutenant Bill Dailey, a supervising DFW warden for the Inland Deserts Region, explains some of the other interesting aspects of the DFW, including the hunting seasons underway in the area. Wardens are armed law enforcement officers, and they do investigations, collect evi-

dence, serve search warrants, and they can enforce any state law, anywhere, with a statewide arrest authority. They ensure public safety on waterways, lakes, deserts, mountain ranges, and coastal lands / beaches. They check for licenses for fishing and hunting, they protect resources, they promote conservation, and they participate in community events to promote education and awareness.

Study shows vaping causing severe respiratory illnesses On September 6, 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that there has been a significant increase in the number of possible cases of severe respiratory illnesses among people who vaped nicotine or cannabis-related products, with reports doubling from 215 possible cases in August to 450 possible cases in 33 states by early September. Three people have died — in Illinois, Oregon and Indiana — and a fourth death is under investigation, according to the CDC. In California, at least 44 cases of Vaping Associated Pulmonary Injury (VAPI) in 14 counties across the state have been reported. According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), most patients in California report vaping cannabis products such as THC or CBD, and some report vaping nicotine-containing liquids as well. Some patients have reported using vaping products that they purchased from unlicensed, unregulated entities. No suspected cases of severe respiratory illness associated with vaping have been reported so far in Inyo County. CDPH warns that vaping is the increasingly popular practice of inhaling vapor from an e-cigarette device, which works by heating a liquid that can contain nicotine, marijuana, or other drugs. The long-term health impacts of vaping are unknown. The liquids used in e-cigarettes are largely unregulated, and they can contain toxic chemicals that can cause lung damage.” According to CDPH, patients who are experiencing VAPI typically present to the hospital with cough, difficulty breathing, fever, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. In many cases, the initial diagnosis was presumed to be infectious, but no evidence of infection or other process to explain the pulmonary disease was found. All cases in California have been hospitalized, with most requiring respiratory support with supplemental oxygen, high-flow oxygen, or bi-level positive airway pressure. At least ten patients had respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation.

WORKABILITY I PROGRAM OFFER The Inyo County Office of Education is now coordinating the WorkAbility I Program. This is a grant funded program that serves the high school students throughout Inyo County. The purpose of this program is to offer students who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) the opportunity to obtain marketable job skills and gain workforce experience, to better prepare them for the transition after high school. We are looking for interested businesses in the community who would like to participate in the WorkAbility I Program. Please contact Alesha Coffman at (760) 873-3262, ext2120 for more information. H H H DELICIOUS BBQ Bishop Elks Lodge #1603 and their guests are invited Friday, Sept. 13 to 3301 W. Line St. Social hour 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. for delicious BBQ Rib dinner.

The CDC has released the following recommendations for the public as of August 30, 2019: 1. While this investigation is ongoing, if you are concerned about these specific health risks, consider refraining from using e-cigarette products. 2. Regardless of the ongoing investigation, anyone who uses e-cigarette products should not buy these products off the street (e.g., e-cigarette products with THC, other cannabinoids) and should not modify e-cigarette products or add any substances to these products that are not intended by the manufacturer. 3. Regardless of the ongoing investigation, e-cigarette products should not be used by youth, young adults, pregnant women, as well as adults who do not currently use tobacco products. If you use e-cigarette products, monitor yourself for symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath, chest pain) and promptly seek medical attention if you have concerns about your health. The CDC and FDA will continue to advise and alert the public as more information becomes available. For current information and updates regarding the outbreak of lung illness associated with using e-cigarette products, visit https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/severe-lung-disease.html References Centers for Disease Control. 2019. The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Progressive Living

The entire Universe is in constant movement, ever expanding, getting better and better. I added that better and better, because the scientist have mixed feelings about expansion. Some are alarmed that other celestial bodies are getting farther and farther away from each other, thus changing gravitational pull or decreasing the cohesion of the galaxies. Then there are the scientists that look on Universal expansion as a good thing. Part of the divergence of opinion goes all the way back to a group of children looking up into the sky and asking, “How high is up?” One child would comment, “Up never ends, it is eternal.” Another would say that there must be a limit or ceiling. The simple answer must be it is good because everything God is involved with is good. It must be because it is written in the Book. Since the Universe is getting better and better, it follows that we should be getting better and better. How can it be that some can say that society is going to h--- in a handbag, and others claim the betterment? It all boils down to choice, choices that have been based on an individual’s beliefs and experience. Negative or limiting beliefs seldom propel an individual to an exalted or successful position. Belief being the basic directive force of consciousness has a major role in determining the direction and ultimate goal relating to health, prosperity and happiness. We live, breathe and have our being in a Cause and Effect world. There is a cause for everything and from cause effects are generated. God spoke (Cause) and the Heavens and the earth were created (Effect). We have that God Nature with us. We speak and our words go forth to accomplish where to we have sent them. Our words keep that constant movement within the Universe in motion. Our feelings and beliefs formulate the words we choose to send out into the Cosmos, and they do not return void of expression. Negative or limited belief may be entrenched within, however; it can be overturned by a committed and consistent conscious effort with a verbal assault on the limiting factors. In simpler words affirmations can change even an entrenched belief system. Enriching and empowering words will erode the energy of negativity, however; consistent usage of life enhancing affirmations is most effective. Simply saying, “I am getting better and better everyday,” will have little effect if it is followed by declarations of how bad you feel. For positive affirmations to be effective, they must not just be said, but they must be lived. You must walk the talk. In other words we must act as if it is already so. William James wrote about acting as if, and it will be. Shakespeare told how we are all actors on the stage of life. It may be time to put your acting skills to work. Speak your affirmation, then walk it, talk it, and live it. It can change your life, and prove life is getting better and better. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
