United We Ride 2019

Riding in the High Sierra for a Purpose By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—The United We Ride organization is gearing up for its 19th annual eastern Sierra fund raiser on Saturday, September 21, from 7 AM - 10 PM, at Brown's Town (near Bishop, CA), and “Rain or Shine,” the event promises to be a good time for an important purpose, says Dale Renfro, President of United We Ride. Registration for the Poker Ride is from 9 – 11 AM. $35 rider entry, $30 passenger entry. Open to the public, the event also features a barbecue in the afternoon, silent auction, raffle prizes (including a 50 / 50 raffle), and the entry includes your Poker Hand, a ride pin, and the barbecue lunch. The proceeds from the event are being donated to the Eastern Sierra Cancer Alliance this year, notes Renfro, and last year the fund raiser generated about $5000, with 85 Poker Ride participants. Everyone is encouraged to share a day outdoors, with family, friends, neighbors, and visitors. “Sure love to see more [participants],” Renfro says with a smile.

September 11th, Patriot's Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance The 18th anniversary of September 11th, now called Patriot's Day, and observed as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, was the founding point of United We Ride. Renfro says, “history shows the group was formed after 9 / 11 [2001].” However, a group of riders in Bishop, CA began its group right after 9 / 11, and the charity ride's donations went to the New York City police and firefighters. United We Ride members come from all walks of life, all ages, and each year they come together to continue their community involvement by selecting charities to donate to in the region. Renfro adds, “All vehicles are welcome.” There are United We Ride participants that come from Ridgecrest, and Nevada, to join in the all-day event, and it does not matter if you aren't riding a motorcycle, you can ride along in a car, pickup truck, or just play your poker hand at Brown's Town, and enjoy the festivities there. When asked what would surprise first-timers about the event, Renfro says, the people involved are “friendly, low key, and the event is mellow. Always been good times.”

Sherry Wilkinson says it’s retirement time, with nearly 40 years of service By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Sherry Wilkinson's last day in Bishop's AAA (pronounced “Triple A”) Office (American Automobile Association) was last week, after 29 years in the small eastern Sierra town. All-told, Wilkinson's been on the AAA's staff, as her name pin said, since 1982, and she's proud of her time with the iconic federation of motor clubs throughout the US. She began in the emergency road services, up through claims adjusting, and into the office manager position, which she had been in for many years. She also worked in the Bishop Elementary Schools for five years, and then resumed her work at AAA. However, her position in the travel products really suited her to a tee, and she said, “I never imagined that I would be able to experience the travel that I have Sherry Wilkinson, serving the AAA (American Automohere.” AAA's TripTik® and international bile Association) for 37 years, said her good-byes to the travel packages are well-known products, Bishop office, and now it's retirement time. She planned and Wilkinson's journeys took her to on spending more time with her grandchildren, and vis“Tahiti, Vienna, and Budapest.” She iting family in Ireland. Our members are unique.” The AAA's presence at the Bishop office, in the eastern Sierra region, is its only presence, between southern California and the Nevada border. People come from around the area, and out of the area, to check in with the AAA's services: roadside assistance, auto repair, traveling, motoring products, DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) assistance, maps, insurance, foreign driver's licensing, passport photos, banking (foreign currency), inspections, and online services. Founded in 1902, by Augustus Post, in Chicago, Illinois, the AAA has celebrated 117 years of business. By my calculations, Wilkinson's time at AAA is nearly a third of its existence, and that said a lot about her very long career with AAA, she called, “The very surprising blessing.”

Back on southbound US 395: the riders head to Mammoth Lakes, and the traditional visit at Roberto's Café and Cantina. Next stop: the Rock Creek Lakes Resort (owned by the King family since 1979), this Sierra lodge, with café, store, lodging, bait shop, and now specialty smoked barbecue products (meats and sauces) is at the top of Rock Creek Canyon, with views of Rock Creek Lake; at 9,700 feet, it's a breath-taking visit. Back on southbound US 395: riders descend Sherwin Grade (once a toll road / wagon trail), with up-close views of Mt. Tom and Round Valley, and far-away vistas of the White Mountains, the Owens Valley, the Volcanic Tablelands, the Owens River Gorge, and the communities around Bishop. Back at Brown's Town: It's Poker Hand time, with the silent auction (Fendon's Furniture is donating a recliner), raffle give-aways, and big outdoor barbecue into the evening. The Wonder of Life

There is a pathway, a direction, a method, a way of approaching life and love that always leads to happiness, fulfillment and peace. Of course there are other journeys that are not as fruitful. In its Infinite Wisdom and Perfect Intelligence. The Universe gave us the ultimate gift of choice whereas we can walk any pathway which we desire. The only caveat is that we have chosen our experience and consequences. So many faiths profess to guide and direct us to the right choice, but they don’t all agree. Psychologists and the medical community tell us how to act, what to eat, but they can’t direct us to love. So what are we to do? Where will we find that map that leads to where we want to go? Many would tell the seeker to go to church. They would say that that’s where the answer lies. Does it matter which church you might ask. Just for the record, I love church. All my life I have gone to church. In my neighborhood, when I was younger, there was a Jewish family across the street; two Catholic families, and a few that attended other churches All these families had boys my same age. I would go to my Christian Science Church every Sunday. I would go Hebrew School with my friend across the street, on Thursday afternoon. Every Saturday my friends and I would ride our bikes to St. Emedius where they could go to confession. On Sunday afternoon I would join the boys from Grace Bible Church in what ever sport was in season against other churches. You could say my life was filled with spiritual diversity. I still love church. They are all good. If your church fills your needs, by all means stay with it. Church can help find the path. Psychology can help, but the real answer will ultimately come from within your own being. Ernest Holmes tells it this way: “There is a living Spirit at the center of your being.
