The tribe is a sovereign nation, operates a casino, and is a part of seven tribes with the Toiyabe Indian Health Project (with a facility in Bishop, CA). The Bishop Tribe's reservation, near Bishop, CA, was originally 67,000 acres. However, in 1932, an Executive Order (under a watershed act) by President Hoover, reduced the tribe's land base to 900 or so acres. The land was given to the city of Los Angeles to construct water diversions to deliver water to Los Angeles.

City of Bishop

Seibu to school patch construction update I Construction will continue next week on the City of Bishop Seibu to School Path project. The project area, including the west end of Keough Street and the path between Keough and the elementary schools is closed to pedestrians. The $400,000 Seibu to School Path project will construct a 1,300 foot long 8 foot wide paved path from the west end of Keough Street to the west side of the Pine and Elm Street Elementary Schools. The improvements include sidewalk on a portion of the north side of Keough Street and will include a connection into the north side of the schools. The project is funded from the State of California using gas tax funds. Work started this week and is expected to continue into November. Ongoing work includes tree removal and grading for the new sidewalk and path. Sidewalk construction is expected to begin next week. The work involves large equipment, falling trees, excavations, and other hidden hazards that make the project hazardous, especially to pedestrians. To ensure safety, the project area including the west end of Keough Street and the dirt pathway that leads between Keough Street and the elementary schools is closed to pedestrians during construction. The many students and parents that normally use this route to and from school need to use a different route while the area is closed.
