Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly
September 10 – 16, 2020
A Memorable Labor Day Weekend Large crowds, smoke, campground closures, and traffic make for an interesting weekend By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Labor Day Weekend ended on an uncommon note as campers, visitors, and residents had to adjust to widespread closures on the National Forests around the state of California. Most campers were told to move on from their spots on Monday, September 7, at 5 p.m., when the Southwest division of the U.S. Forest Service closed all camping and day-use, due to extreme fire hazards. People who had anticipated staying in the eastern Sierra throughout the week, were told by text or email, their reservations were vacated. Move on back to home. Traffic jams were evident from Las Vegas to the eastern Sierra, as people made their ways back home, after their long-term camping and visiting plans were canceled, late Monday afternoon. Those who did stay in the region were faced with heavy smoke, ash fall, dust, and extreme heat. Records were broken across the state, and it seemed that no region of California was spared with a combination high temperatures, power outages, “fire weather, and “smoke and haze. Locally, the weather was clear in a few drainages, like Bishop Creek, on Saturday, September 5, a free fishing day statewide. And, the crowds were out for the day, with heavy use in Bishop Creek areas. North Lake had endless cars and trucks parked illegally, on shoulders, making it nearly impossible to get around the area safely. Vehicles were parked for a good mile below Sabrina Lake, making the area seem like an emergency vehicle / rescue situation would be very difficult. It was impossible to travel in some areas. Not good!
Generous Moments Farther north, at Virginia Lakes, there were also large numbers of folks recreating, and again, many of the visitors were not observing common sense. Parking neck-and-neck Huge rainbow trout reeled in at Virginia Lake, CA, September in illegal shoulder areas, and block6.Weighed in at four pounds. Photos by The Hired Pen ing the main roadways. the lake, it was a bit more tranquil, with one fellow from San Jose, CA, generously sharing his fishing experiences with others. One rainbow trout caught was four pounds, and the 10-year-old gal who was reeling in the big one, was thrilled.
Loving Our Area to Death In 30 years, this writer has never seen the numbers of people visiting our area. Traffic near Olancha, CA, was a two-hour wait, as some took to the dirt power line roads with their campers and trailers. One witness said, “It was comical, watching the visitors trying to drive over the rough power line roads with their trailers. Visitors exiting Death Valley contributed to the holdup near Olancha, when they merged with the extreme traffic from up north. As of Monday, September 7, at 5 p.m., the huge number of illegal and careless activities by any and all visitors has prompted, along with extreme fire danger, the closures of our national forests, to all camping and day-use. Eight national forests in the state of California have closed to all use, due to the huge numbers of people driving to these regions, unprepared, and overrunning local forest and land management resources. Unless we all recreate more responsibly, these closures will remain in place....

Manor True Value Hardware donates health and safety kits Manor True Value Hardware, in partnership with the True Value Foundation, is providing free health and safety kits to Bishop Union High School through the newly created Educational Heroes Safety Campaign. To ensure the health and safety of students, teachers, administrators and staff at their local school, Manor True Value Hardware is donating kits comprised of hand sanitizer, KN-95 masks and hand soap. At the beginning of the pandemic, True Value Manufacturing retooled its EasyCare paint production facility in Cary, Illinois, to produce FDA-approved hand sanitizer and other essential cleaning products to meet unprecedented nationwide consumer demand for health and cleaning essentials. In August, the True Value Foundation decided to go even further to address growing public need for these products as schools reopen by launching the Educational Heroes Safety campaign. This collaborative effort between the Company and its independent retailers aims to keep America’s kids learning while keeping our frontline educational heroes safe.

However, it took until the City of BishBish op’s incorporation (Bishop is the only incorincor porated town in Inyo County, CA) in 1903, to
get the fire department underway. The City of Bishop’s fire department began with the infrastructure of the newly incorporated town, in 1904, when the citizens approved a bond issue for a water system. No water system, no water for fire hoses. The first official Bishop Volunteer Fire Department chief was Les Horton, and he commanded two-wheel carts, which were then upgraded to a fire truck in 1912. Later, the fire department reorganized in 1938. Fire equipment improvements continue to this day, and people can visit the old two-wheel cart at the Laws Railroad Museum, near Bishop, CA.
City and District are Partners in Protection “The Bishop Fire Department is a cooperation between the Bishop Rural Fire Protection Dis District (founded in 1947) and the City of Bishop that provides fire protection and other emeremer gency services in the Bishop area. National Preparedness Month is recognized each September to promote family and community disaster and emergency planning now and throughout the year. The 2020 National Preparedness Month theme is: “Disasters Don’t wait. MAKE YOUR PLAN TODAY!” As our nation continues to respond to COVID 19, there is no better time to be involved this September.
WEEK 1 September 1 5: MAKE A PLAN Talk to your friends and family about how you will communicate before, during, and after a disaster. Make sure to update your plan based on the Centers for Disease Control recommendations due to the coronavirus.
WEEK 2 September 6 12: BUILD A KIT Gather supplies that will last for several days after a disaster for everyone living in your home. Don’t forget to consider the unique needs each person or pet may have in case you have to evacuate quickly. Update your kits and supplies based on recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control.
WEEK 3 – September 13 19: PREPARE FOR DISASTERS Limit the impacts that disasters have on you and your family. Know the risk of disasters in your area and check insurance coverage. Learn how to make your home stronger and more resilient in the face of wildfires and other common hazards and act fast if you receive a local warning or alert.
WEEK 4: September 20 26: TEACH YOUTH ABOUT PREPAREDNESS Talk to your kids about preparing for emergencies and what to do in case you are separated. Reassure them by providing information about how they can get involved. For more information and resources go to https://www.ready.gov/september supplement of The Sierra Reader September 2020
