Acree chats about “watching people visit together and meeting new people” in her business, and she shares, these are the real reasons she’s opened 1903 Taphouse and Company. She loves to garden and she loves an imals, and she’s wearing a few hats in town, but she seems to thrive on these things. Bishop, CA—The Main Street scene in Bishop adds a new eatery to its line-up, as the 1903 Taphouse and Company celebrates a soft opening this month. Theresa Acree, owner, is all smiles, and she is looking for ward to watching the community come together in the historic and nostalgic restaurant and bar. The old building is enjoying a renewal of being a local hangout for families, while serving up hot and cold dishes, brand name beers and wines, and an atmosphere that encourages playing pool or board games, or checking out the latest sports programs, or visiting with colleagues and friends.
The 1903 Taphouse’s menu is catering to kids, too, Acree notes, and there will be a separate serving area for students, and they can pick up lunch items in a separate area from the adult-only spaces. The menu cur rently features the McMurry Chicago Dog, the Yard Dog, the Bristlecone Dog, Al Wright’s three bean chile, a Tom Clark Vegan Brat, Bernice Young’s macaroni salad, a loaded potato salad side (for sale to take home, too), and decadent desserts, like stuffed cheesecake with peach pie or chocolate cheesecake. Acree serves up a variety of flavors with the brats and hot dogs, including the Spicey Line and Main dog, sure to awake your taste buds. Lane Durocher greets the bar guests with a wide selection of beers on tap, bottle, or glass, and wine favorites are available as well. And, coming soon, Acree adds with enthusiasm, “A 1903 Shake Shack,” featuring ice cream, floats, and other treats.
Energetic, conscientious, and community-minded, these are all adjectives to describe Acree. She is a human dynamo, and she is well-known for finding joy in all the right places. Many of Bishop’s residents know her as the “garden lady,” at Ace High Country Lumber, or maybe you know her from her former restaurant days, in the Bay Area, or maybe you know her as one of only three women who worked as a journeyman press opera tor at the University of California. Well, whether you know Acree for these accomplishments or others, she’s got an amazing talent for remembering people and their interests. So, it’s not surprising that she’s tackling this newest project, after only nine years in the area...this isn’t her first rodeo in the people-pleasing business.
The 1903 Taphouse is designed with a focus on mainly family, and then bar entertainment, Acree explains. “A sixty-forty split” in the restaurant’s spaces allows for more family emphasis and areas designed with them in mind, and that pleases Acree. She’s come to the Eastern Sierra for family, and her grandchildren, who she sees eventually owning and running the business. “I want my grandchildren to grow up here,” Acree says, beaming with pride. She also kept the name of the business (from former owners), a celebration of Bishop’s incorporation, in May 6, 1903, and the building’s long-time presence on Main Street. “We want to honor and build on the history of our town for generations to come,” Acree says.

KORE Mining’s exploratory drilling for gold has been approved. 2021 winter conditions prevented them from starting drilling last year, however, drilling can commence any day now. If KORE has good results from their drill ing, their next step is more drilling leading to an open pit, cyanide heap leach mine! It is critical that we protect the fragile headwaters of the Owens and adjacent ecosystems, as well as our local small town economies.
Part of the Owens River headwaters, the region is home to several unique plant and animal species, including the Bi-State Sage Grouse, which is a candidate species for list ing under the endangered species act. This watershed is important to our local wildlife and communities, and also provides drinking water to the residents of Los Angeles.

The Recommended Budget written and presented by Chapman details the anticipated revenue and proposed expenditures for each of the County’s 19 departments and 130-plus budget units for the 2022-2023 Fiscal Year, which runs from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023. (On June 14, the Board of Supervisors adopted a modified version of the 2021-2022 Board Approved Budget to serve as the Preliminary 2022-2023 Fiscal Year Budget until a final version could be presented and approved this fall.)
Chapman’s 18-page Budget Message offers a comprehensive breakdown of the Fiscal Year 2022-2023 CAO Recommended Budget, within the context of the “big-picture” fiscal challenges and opportunities that can arise this fiscal year. In the message, Chapman describes the budget as a story of fiscal conservatism leading to financial resiliency – as has been achieved the last several fiscal years and which will need to continue happening if the County is to weather coming economic storms.
The Budget Message describes several exciting projects and initiatives and their intended benefits in greater detail, as well as discussion of the why’s and how’s of requested expenditures and highlights the differences between the Department Requested Budget and the CAO Recommended Budget are highlighted in detail. The Budget Message also includes concise information about the County’s income (from taxes, fees, and other sources), a breakdown of expenses by function (i.e., Public Safety, Roads, Public Assistance, Public Health, General Services, etc.), and notes the continuing hard work of many Department Heads to reduce expenses and make the most of available revenue sources. The public is encouraged to take part in the upcoming Budget Hearings.

Laws Good Ole Days, a long-standing community event since 1977, revived Laws once again last Saturday. Laws was a bustling community full of people, activities, and excitement. Listing to live music in the depot during the rain surely instilled a good ole time. On Friday, the sold-out Dave Stamey dinner-concert started the festivities on the right notes. Saturday morning came around with overcast skies making for a pleasant day on the Laws grounds. Everyone had a good time whether riding the rails, investigating the paranormal pres ence of past local generations, crushing rocks, observing the blacksmith, printer, woodworkers, weaver, or saddle maker. Kids were testing their skills on a treadle seeing machine, in jewelry making, and learned the first steps in quilting. CALFire and USFS brought Smokey Bear and Captain Cat along with a log, misery whip, and branding iron to raise awareness of fire safety. Live performances are so much better – The Bishop Community Band played good ole tunes until Sage Romero and the AkaMaya Dance Group took the stage and introduced local Na tive American traditions. Fiddling Pete continued with a Vaudeville-style line up including performance by Coale Johnson, Jim Cardwell, Michael Tcherkassky, and Giacomo Timbrello. The Old-Time Pickers ensemble: Brian Adkins, Charlie Broten, Annie Barrett Cashner, Howie Schwartz, and Ray Finch serenaded us from the Depot dock while simultaneously entertaining the patrons of Rosa’s Mexican Food.
