Fairgrounds, giving people information about where they should set up / stage their exhibits. Heritage Arts on display at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, and local businesses, like Chalfant Big Trees Farm, contribute to the fairground’s beautification too.

Sierra, CA—Long before the Fair un wraps, in the heat of summer, there are plenty of native-grown volunteers and beautiful exhibits getting ready to show the best the High Sierra has to offer. Exhibitors with their homemade and homegrown items enter the Tri-County Fairgrounds (serving Inyo, Mono, and Alpine Counties) days before the start of the actu al fair to the public, and these contestants set up their displays, or stage their creations, for judging. Volunteers greet the exhibitors at the fairgrounds, and give them directions to the different exhibit buildings. Fresh foods, vegetables, pies, cookies, and flo ral displays are judged early, since these exhib its are perishable, and the exhibits will spoil in appearance, taste, and overall freshness. Other exhibits, such as photography, and other fine arts, are looked at and commented on, and judging takes place over a couple of days. And, the volunteers are busy around the fairgrounds / facilities / buildings, sprucing up the event center for months ahead of the fair’s opening, which is a part of the tradition of the annual sharing of the region’s “best-in-show.” 310-890-1835 -

This year’s Demolition Derby promises to have a new intermission event, when the small tikes take to the center stage in the lil’ motorsport rides, decked in balloons, for a bounce-off of their own. Mean while, backstage...the demolition derby cars are getting fixed up for the “Powder Puff Gals.” The Dem olition Derby is a big fundraiser for the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department, so come out and cheer on the derby contestants. Don’t forget to enter the 50 / 50 Raffle too!

Obituary Mark Todd Watts of Liberty, Utah passed away peacefully, August 1,2022. Mark was born on December 9, 1962 in Lancaster, California. His family moved to Marble Canyon in 1967, then relocated to Big Pine, California in 1968. He graduated from Big Pine High School in 1980. He continued his education at College of the Siskiyous where he earned his AS degree. While attending college Mark took a job at Weed Lumber Mill. This would launch his love for the lumber and building industry. He leaves behind his successful business, Automated Structures, as his legacy. He had a strong devotion to his employees and considered them part of his family. Above all, Mark loved his family. He was in his element outside in nature, especially fishing. He was an avid football enthusiast, skier, and often the instigator of an unforgettable adventure. Mark had a kind spirit and always fought for the underdog. He had an innate belief in people to reach their po tential. Mark is well known for his incredible sense of humor and his ability to bring laughter into any situation. Mark is preceded in death by his son, Wyatt Todd Watts in 2017, and his father, Gar Albert Watts. He is survived by his wife Julie, of 29 years, daugh ters Autumn Ann, and Katie Brook. His mother , Bonnie Watts of Big Pine, brother, Mike Watts and his children, Kimberly and Mikey. His sister, Missie Watts-Weed and her children, Ashton, Gar, and Tadd, of Yreka, California. A celebration of life will be held in his honor on Saturday, September 24, at in the Big Pine Town Hall. 150 Dewey Street, Big Pine, California.
