It’s all about the land

Why even have a land title and insurance business? “Preserve history”--Jerry Core, Co-founder of Inyo-Mono Title Comapny Eastern Sierra, CA—It’s one thing to recreate a land and title office, within a land and title office, and be a working land title and insurance office. And yet, in Bishop, CA, just such a place and business exists. Inyo-Mono Title Company, since 1913, holds its own titles (pun intended) to “the only complete title plant with records on every parcel of land dating back to 1860. We are the only Title Company with a physical presence in both counties.” (Source: Inyo-Mono Title Company’s website) A well-documented journey of “searcher of records” pre-dates by more than a century, the current owners of Inyo-Mono Title Company, the Core family, of Bishop, CA, on this website. The Cores took over the continuous “searcher of records,” and in 1983, Jim (father, and wife Mary Jo) and Jerry (son, and wife Debbie) created Inyo-Mono Title Company. The family’s offices have had many re-imagings and presences, in both counties, eventually settling in 2004, on North Main Street, in Bishop. This two-story / two stories of the business bring together title and escrow departments, and allowed a 21st century approach to proving up land claims. Tyler Core, son of Jerry and Debbie, shares his family’s “searcher of records” mindset, and since 2008, he’s been adding his knowledge to the third-generation company.

Counties were born of mining activities, their founders were wise enough to select agricultural settlements rather than mining camps for county seats’’-- Mary Dedecker, Title Officer Providing title, escrow, and notary services are essential businesses, especially in the West. It’s all about the land, and often the first one to the recorder’s office, starts the “proving up your claim.” However, Jerry explains, it’s quite a bit more involved in a land / property / title / insurance business. A recorder’s office records people and companies. A land title and insurance office searches records, and records for land and property transactions. “If you don’t describe it [land or property], it doesn’t convey.” Describing the land involves, Jerry says, looking for records of “property markers, property descriptions,” and things “posted to the property.” Inyo-Mono Title Company also searches records and records land and property transactions straddling the California and Nevada borderlands. Some transactions take decades to complete. Other records are “perfected” with “no defects” more quickly, Jerry points out. Reports are generated from these title searches, and title and insurance companies work with buyers, sellers, lenders, banks, and attorneys. Sometimes, Jerry adds, the title company is called in as an expert witness. Knowing property law is another essential element of a land title and insurance business.

Bishop, CA—Following a long hiatus from public luncheons and meet and greets in-person, the Bishop Paiute Tribal Council and City of Bishop Council got together to discuss new information and ideas at a fall luncheon at the Wanaaha Casino, in Bishop, CA. Although not every council member from the tribe or city were present, the officials in attendance enjoyed some face-toface interaction at the event. FYI: For Your Information Bishop Paiute Tribe Council Chairman, Tilford Denver; Vice-Chairman, Jeff Romero; Treasurer / Secretary, Steven Orihuela; Council Member, Allen Summers Sr., and Council Member, Joyce White.
