Wayne (John Wayne’s son), or Robert Carradine (Carradine family fame), or Bruce Boxleitner and Diamond Farnsworth (Richard Farnsworth’s son) during the parade. The Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce is located on Main Street, and it has a multitude of information about this charming, census-designated, “frontier” town, and the courtyard nearby hosts local events and has unique local businesses. Eastern Sierra stickers and posters can be found at Wild About Productions Printing and hand made jewelry by Jayne Jewels Shop are a couple of the entrepreneurs in the courtyard. Lone Pine also boasts a highway legend, the Frosty Chalet, which is open May-October. Known for the chocolate-dipped cones, and traditional hamburgers, onion rings, and malts and shakes, this roadside cafe brings back nostalgic images of Americana. Lone Pine also has a mobile veterinary service, and Happy Trails and Tails provides a licensed pet sitter and Dr. Cheryl Howerton, DVM, opened the mobile vet business in 2018.

Lone Pine enjoys magnificent views of Mt. Whitney, and the Inyo Mountains. The intriguing Alabama Hills lured movie companies to the area in the 1920s. The list of movies and television programs filmed in the bouldered landscape contains some of the world’s best-known westerns. Lone Pine celebrates this film tradition annually with the Lone Pine Film Festival. This year’s event runs from October 7-10, and the theme is “The Great And, once the sun goes down in Lone Pine, the new neon lights Western Comeback.” Lone Pine’s Museum of Western Film His- come on—Main Street. Lone Pine, CA: True Western Frontier Town

Lone Pine, CA—Lone Pine’s earliest inhabitants were the Paiute Indigenous people, and it was a village site, along traditional trading routes. Later, in 1866, Mexican miners established some of the Owens Valley’s earliest silver mining claims. Known as “the hill,” by other local settlers, Lone Pine grew into a booming frontier town. A massive earthquake (magnitude estimates 7.4 to 7.9) on March 26, 1872, and the damage in Lone Pine was devastating. Much of the town’s buildings and homes (adobe and stone) were destroyed, and 27 people lost their lives. The popular Diaz Lake recreation area and the small lake were created during the enormous tremblor. Today, visitors can visit the large fault scarps north of Whitney Portal Road, and west of Lone Pine.
