Kennedy Camerana | The Signpost RACIST GRAFFITI FOUND ON WSU ELEVATOR
Camarena |

On June 27, a Weber State University staff member found the words “White Power” etched into the panel of an elevator in the Shepherd Union Building. Though the graffiti was removed within the hour, Weber State University sent out an email notifying the community two days later to address the situation.

As of now, the university does not know who etched the racially-charged words into the elevator panel or when the graffiti occurred. Though this seems to be an isolated

incident, there has been an increase in hate crimes against persons or property in the state of Utah and in universities within the state.

In late 2021, reports of KKK activity and destruction of Black students’ property was reported at the University of Utah and in the fall of 2022, Brigham Young University came under fire after a student chanted the “n-word” at a Black volleyball player in a game against Duke University.

According to the Department of Justice, between 2020 and 2021, incidents of hate crimes were up by over 2,000 incidents in the state of Utah between the two years, with

about 60% of incidents having to do with racial or ethnic background. The data for 2022 and 2023 have not yet been released by the department.

In the email sent out to students by Tammy Nguyen, WSU’s executive director for access and inclusion, the University addressed their disapproval of the actions and any other actions that perpetuate racism.

The university also encouraged students to reach out to WSU’s counseling services and centers for belonging and cultural engagement, if they feel necessary.

The annual Ogden tradition, Lindquist Pops Concert and Fireworks, is just right around the corner. The Lindquist Pops Concert and Fireworks is a summer celebration for Ogden City’s Pioneer Day that brings thousands of local residents to Weber State’s campus to listen to the New American Philharmonic and watch a firework show. This year marks the 44th annual celebration of the event.

This year’s Lindquist Pops celebration will be on July 16 from 9-11 p.m. There will be food trucks at the event to provide beverages and food. At the Lindquist Plaza, the New American Philharmonic will begin playing at 9 p.m. and will play for an hour before the fireworks begin. Residents can watch the fireworks light up the sky to the sound of the symphony playing.

This tradition started in 1978 by John A. Lindquist, president of Lindquist Mortuaries and Cemeteries, and Telitha E. Lindquist and has continued every year since then. Although the celebration did have to go on hiatus during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, it is now back in full swing.

This year, the Ogden City Council is honoring John Lindquist through memory sharing, curated by Ogden Councilman Bart Blair. Blair wants residents of the area to share their memories and tradition of going to this celebration. Blair has been a part of Ogden City Council for 14 years and was born and raised here in Ogden. Blair is also an alumni from Ogden High School as well as Weber State University.

On Ogden City’s website, there was a forum for residents to share their memories regarding the upcoming event.

“I thought it would be great if we could ask the community for their favorite memory or tradition about the Pops Concert,” Blair said. The night of the concert, a few of these memories will be shared with John E. Lind-

quist, the son of the event’s founders.

“I just respect that Mr. Lindquist and Weber State have worked on this partnership to provide such a great activity for the community that everyone gets to participate in, and everyone gets to come together,” Blair said.

“It is wonderful to see.”

Blair shared some of his traditions for the Pops Concert. When Blair was a child, he and his family would go every year with a few other families from his neighborhood. Blair and his family and friends would go to Weber State Sunday afternoon and share a potluck picnic. This event has also become a multi-generational tradition for Blair and his family.

“I was a 6- or 7-year-old kid when I first started going with my family,” Blair said. “Now I’ve raised my family going to watch the show. My daughters are all in college now as they start their own families; I think they’ll come back to celebrate. It just continues to grow.”

Blair is unsure of whether or not memo-

ry-sharing will become an ongoing tradition for the Lindquist Pops event, saying it depends on the responses that the City Council receives.

“I think it would be a fun tradition to start,” Blair said. “Every year, either through Ogden City’s website or Weber State, have people share their favorite memories.”

Blair said it would be a great way to bring people in the community together while also honoring John A. Lindquist as well as Ogden’s history.

Blair also discussed how locals might prepare to get the best seat in the house to watch the fireworks.

“You’ll notice on Saturday night, people are getting to get their spot,” Blair said. “Some have had the same spot for years and years.”

On-campus parking and seating is limited for the event. VIP parking and seating fill up quickly, as thousands of people come to the event, so it is important to RSVP if you want on-campus parking.

Parking lots A1 and A10 will be closed on campus starting July 15, limiting some of the parking on campus. Additional parking will be available at the Dee Events Center as well as down Harrison Boulevard.

Personal fireworks and pets are not allowed at this event, but exceptions will be made for service animals. Saving spots with chairs and blankets will not be allowed before July 15 at 6 p.m.

The Lindquist Pops and Fireworks is one of the largest events in northern Utah during the summer as thousands of people attend this on-going event every year that shows no sign of stopping. This year’s celebration is brought even more together through the sharing of memories and honoring of John A. Lindquist.

Fireworks of all colors were presented at the 2022 Lindquist Pops Concert.

“Ahora he criado a mi familia yendo a ver el programa.

Despite loving dark fantasy and playing over 80 hours in Dark Souls One, I suck at Soulsbornes, the punishingly hard video games produced by FromSoft, and have yet to play Elden Ring. Until recently, I didn’t have a way to pick

the game up until a Steam sale dropped it down about 30%.

I decided to set up my first character as if I had no experience with a Soulsborne game. I chose the most classic-looking fantasy hero, the Vagabond starter class, and a crimson amber medallion that’s supposed to give me more health points as my free item.

With that, I dove into the game, knowing only a few things. A queen has died and the titular Elden Ring is shattered. It’s my job as a “Tarnished” to find the pieces of this Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord.

I finished the tutorial and walked out into this beautiful world. I saved at a checkpoint and then ran off into the distance where I promptly got killed by a miniboss.

After about five tries, I decided that whatever that was, it was much too hard at this moment, and proceeded to follow the little wisps leading me towards a castle in the distance.

When I got to the castle and dispatched the weaker enemies out front, I ventured in, where I met the first boss.

With the help of my summons and another player’s summons right outside of the boss area, the boss was killed and I journeyed onwards.

Much like the Dark Souls games before it, Elden Ring has three different types of multiplayer. The summons that I used is the first type of co-op multiplayer feature in Elden Ring. A player can set up a summoning sign somewhere on the ground so others can assist them.

The second, and most common, is a somewhat indirect form, where players can leave messages on the ground for others to find and read. These messages can warn of impending dangers, mislead in the hopes of leading you to your doom, or simply be comical with no real effect on the game.

The third is player versus player, where you or an enemy player invades the other’s world to fight to the death for extra money.

As far as gameplay, it plays like most other games made from FromSoft.

Between that and video game controls having been mostly standardized to a certain layout on controllers, maneuvering and fighting were remarkably easy for me to pick up.

Just because the combat is fairly standard and hasn’t been heavily changed does not mean that combat is easy. This is a FromSoft game after all, so the combat is challenging and occasionally feels rigged against you, but the game gives you plenty of options to

cater to your playstyle and make the game easier.

The graphics are absolutely gorgeous, and do an amazing job of pulling you in.

I personally love the Soulsborne style of storytelling, but if you want to know what is happening in the world you are in without spending an inordinate amount of time wandering around to pick up random items and read their descriptions, then your best bet is to Google lore videos and just watch or listen to those.

If you are like me and like to have a TV show or a podcast in the background while gaming, listening to Elden Ring lore videos can be quite a fun experience. It provides a certain feeling as if you were the Witcher and your goofy bard is telling you legends as you wander the countryside.

I will add that because of this cryptic style of storytelling, any little discovery feels monumental because it’s like you were the only person to have discovered it.

Regardless, the lore is worth digging into however you choose, as George R. R. Martin wrote the lore of the world preceding the events of the game, making the history very rich and entertaining no matter how you consume it.

On June 30, Ogden Arts held the second Ogden Twilight concert for 2023 at the Ogden Amphitheater. As I am not a raver, nor do I listen to music that is adjacent to that of rave music, I am not qualified to review the actual performances. What I can do however, is report my observations as an outsider let into the space.

Directly in front of the portable benches at the amphitheater was a grass patch to sit on. Any blankets or camping chairs were banned from entry because they were a safety concern on the grass. Water bottles filled and not sealed and outside food was also prohibited as is standard for music events.

At the front of the stage, the VIP section was located. On the right side of the stage was the sponsor lounge for the sponsors of the concert.

Lucky Slice Pizza had two separate trucks held on each side of a food court directly behind the bleachers that had been wheeled in for extra seating. Along with pizza, there was also Fry Me to the Moon, a food truck specializing in fried foods such as donuts, Navajo tacos and scones; Wasatch Roasting Company, a local coffee shop; and Ogden Taco Cartel, which sold tacos with various types of meat, including a vegan jackfruit option.

When you first get past security, directly in front of the entrance were the first two of five alcohol wristband spots and the merchandise stands for Kaskade and the Ogden Twilight concert set.

Close to either side of the entrance into the event, there were Ogden Twilight’s beer stands. Directly across from one of these, Ogden Clinic was set up with water, chapstick and sunglasses for the concertgoers. Along with the bar spots for mixed drinks and beer, there was also a non-alcoholic pop-up selling zero-proof beverages.

Zero-proof refers to drinks brewed in a way to avoid any alcohol content, which leads to drinks that still have the taste but without the buzz, allowing people to still participate in alcohol culture without actually having to deal with the drug.

“Everyone wants to be invited, but not everybody wants to be intoxicated,” Amy Wanderley-Britt, one of the co-owners of WB’s Eatery and one of the people running the non-alcoholic bottle shop, said.

The lineup included Mr. Tape, SOHMI and Kaskade. Due to the concert being somewhat close to rave-style music, the attire of attendees was greatly varied, ranging from shorts and a tee shirt to bathing suits and mesh tops. As the night went on, and more people started to show up, the outfits shifted further towards that of rave culture, coinciding with the increase in Kandi on attendees’ wrists.

Kandi is a type of accessory or jewelry made of plastic beads and symbolizes unity in the American rave community. They hold a similar significance as friendship bracelets outside of the rave community.

Between the acts, attendees filled the food truck/merch alley in order to kill time between sets.
