Centralia is a popular stop for people traveling from Seattle or Portland. One of Centralia’s popular hot spots is Dick’s Brewing Company, which is just a short drive from I-5. This microbrewery creates a variety of delicious beers and offers tasting and tours every Friday and third Saturday M T. R A INIER from 3-7 p.m. Centralia is also known for its unique downtown events like the Hub City Car Show, which showcases over 500 different classic cars and hot-rods and Antiquefest, a two-day festival where the streets are filled with H U B CI T Y CA R S H OW antique vendors.
Don’t forget to check out Centralia’s past, showcased in the historical Borst Home and Blockhouse. These 1800’s buildings are located in Borst Park which is right off I-5. Joseph Borst was an early pioneer who settled along the Chehalis River’s north bank, and the beautiful two-story white house he built for his wife Mary, stands near the park. It is open for tours during the summer, but the blockhouse built for grain storage during the Indian Wars of 1855-56 can be seen year-round. In pioneer days, Centralia was the halfway stopover point for stage coaches operating between the Columbia River and Seattle. The city was founded by George Washington, a black man who moved west to escape prejudicial laws. He established his homestead in 1852, but after two white men hinted they might file a claim on his land, he sought help from his white adoptive parents, James and Anna Corcoran, who had settled in Toledo. They bought his land, filed a claim on it, and when the law changed in 1857 to allow blacks to own property, sold it back to him. After railroad officials brought the track across George’s property, he filed a plat establishing the first blocks in the new town of Centerville. Incorporation of the city of Centralia, by action of the Legislature, took place in 1886. Since then, Centralia has grown and expanded considerably and has become the largest city in Lewis County. Other great things to do in Centralia include the Brewfest at the Olympic Club, and so much more! Visit cityofcentralia.com for more information.
