#22. AUGUST ISSUE We’re in the height of summer madness here in Cornwall. Some small waves kicking about, and the water is rather warm believe it or not! We’ve even had the odd shortie/boardies day. Fairly rare in the UK it has to be said. Hope you are enjoying the

LIMITS The Big Jump :: In early June I leapt at an opportunity to come live amongst the weird and wonderful in Newquay; my objectives being: have fun, get better at surfing and not watch as much mindless television. Little did I know I would be throwing myself off 30ft cliffs and tunnelling through blowholes for a living, or that coasteering even existed. But after only a few days of shadowing the lead instructors of Salt Air Adventures, I knew I was hooked. As far as outdoor activities go, it is pretty out there and I cannot pinpoint one thing about the day that makes it. The whole experience of being immersed in the natural environment and exploring the coastline on your own two feet is invigorating. Plus, having the opportunity to test your own limits on the big jumps is immense. I have realised that there is a whole new way to learn about the local environment and even if the waves are flat and there’s no surf it doesn’t mean you can’t still be in the water exploring your surroundings. LIMITS

And so began two hours of clambering through caves with blowholes blasting water past us with a sound like thunder. Swimming through rock gaps of surging

water, rising and falling and carrying us along. I quickly became comfortable bobbing around in the swell and moving water. Jumping off stacks of varying heights definitely pushed my limits, but got the adrenalin flowing nicely! Our instructors were very competent water users and qualified lifeguards, instilling confidence in us all, as they led us on an explorative adventure through the nooks and crannies of the coastline you might otherwise never get to see. Such a great activity for those flatter days, and extremely good for anybody’s confidence in the water whatever their surf riding ability. Gemma Chalmers, Editor.

What to do on a Sunday afternoon with not a lot of surf about... I very much fancied getting in the water, and we were given the opportunity to join a group going out for an early evening coasteer around the coastline from Porth, Newquay. I was the tiniest bit apprehensive, having never done it before, but felt more a healthy feeling of adventure than anything else not quite knowing what to expect.

No one in my family surfs, so I first started surfing at a local club called Waveslaves because a friend who already surfed made me go with her, after one session, I was hooked! My dad didn’t like me going in on my own so he bought a board and made me teach him, which worked well for me as I always had someone to take me to the beach! I surf at Fistral (Newquay) most of the time but Towan is my fall back option; a bit more sheltered and the winter storms created a sand bank which makes for some fun lefts! After surfing for a couple of years, I heard about a trip with a charity who create opportunities for young people through surfing; to the south coast. So I signed up and went along, and surfed Sennen on a swelly which was a ridiculous decision on my part as it would have been perfect for a short board - it didn’t look that big from the top of the cliff! When we got back from the trip I started going to all of the clubs Ground Swell offered. There I met some of my amazing friends, and surfed all through the winter with them and no one else out. The summer after this, Pete (the owner of Ground Swell) ran a trip to France, so me and my awesome surfer/film maker/ photographer friend, Rachael enthusiastically agreed to go too. So we went out there for a week and fell in love with the place, our confidence in the water and surfing improved so much and thanks to Pete, who sat on the beach filming us all day so that we could do some video analysis of ourselves, then Rachael made an amazing video of our time in France! When we got back with our new-found confidence in bigger waves, we were greeted by a 2 week flat spell so jumped in our wetsuits and paddled around on whatever big floaty boards we could find. Ground Swell have now started running girls surf sessions with Zoe Sheath which I am definitely going to. Hopefully I will be competing this year, as well as surf coaching at any surf school that will have me! So it’s going to be a busy summer with another trip to France planned. Bring on the wetsuit tan lines! Betsy, Cornwall, UK. http://youtu.be/YNSKxpqL8Cc
